"If you are happy, I am happy. If you are sad, I am sad.

"Please live with bright enthusiasm and energy. Those who maintain unwavering faith in the Gohonzon are never deadlocked. For the Mystic Law is the eternal law of the universe. To possess the conviction 'I have faith in the Mystic Law, so no matter what happens I will never have to worry! I will never be defeated!'—this is what faith is all about.

"Yet despite the fact that they possess the Gohonzon, there are those who are quick to become pessimistic or discouraged. This is not faith. Such inner weakness is what causes people suffering.

“'Because I embrace the great, eternal law of the universe, I am certain to win, to become happy, to have a wonderful, enjoyable life' — with this determination in your heart, please advance with confidence."

"Through 'devoting one’s life' (Jp. kimyo) to the Mystic Law, we become part of the life of the Buddha of the universe; our lives begin to shine as entities of the Mystic Law. Nichiren Daishonin teaches us this wonderful secret. The important thing, therefore, is that we centre our lives on the Law. If we make ourselves the centre, we will advance in the opposite direction from that of attaining Buddhahood.

"May you lead joyous lives! If your life is joyless, make it joyous! If you have no hope, create some! For the mind is free and untrammeled; it is filled with limitless possibilities. This is all the more true of you who embrace the Mystic Law, the Great Law of Freedom."

"There is no true happiness for human beings other than chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo. The sutra reads, '. . . where living beings enjoy themselves at ease.' How could this passage mean anything but the boundless joy of the Law?"

If in a single moment of life we exhaust the pains and trials of millions of kalpas, then instant after instant there will arise in us the three Buddha bodies with which we are eternally endowed. Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is just such a 'diligent' practice."

"Chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo enables us to break through any obstacle. Our brave and vigorous efforts now, with firm and unwavering resolve, are the great struggle of Bodhisattvas of the Earth, tantamount to countless eons of effort.

Nothing is ever wasted in our struggles for the sake of the Mystic Law. By striving in the forefront of our movement for kosen-rufu with courage and invincible spirit, we can bring forth the wisdom of the Buddha; we can activate the protective functions of the universe and find a way forwards without fail.

To my fellow members whom I trust with all my heart, battle through hardship and adversity, and brim with the powerful, joy-filled benefit of faith.”

"Neither the pure land nor hell exists outside oneself; both lie only within one's own heart. Awakened to this, one is called a Buddha; deluded about it, one is called an ordinary person. The Lotus Sutra reveals this truth, and one who embraces the Lotus Sutra will realise that hell is itself the Land of Tranquil Light."

“Nichiren Daishonin writes: 'The wonderful means of truly putting an end to the physical and spiritual obstacles of all living beings is none other than Nam-myoho-renge-kyo' (WND-1, 842).

"The sound of our voices chanting and spreading Nam-myoho-renge-kyo as we practice for the happiness of ourselves and others is the ultimate victory cheer of life, brimming with the power to resolutely overcome any challenge that may confront humanity.

“The Daishonin states very clearly and strictly:

"'Everywhere other than the Capital of Tranquil Light is a realm of suffering. Once you leave the haven of inherent enlightenment, what is there to bring you joy? I pray that you will embrace the Mystic Law, which guarantees that people “will enjoy peace and security in their present existence and good circumstances in future existences” [LSOC5, 136]. This is the only glory [brilliant achievement] that you need seek in your present lifetime, and is the action that will draw you toward Buddhahood in your next existence. Single-mindedly chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo and urge others to do the same; that will remain as the only memory of your present life in this human world.' (WND-1, 64)”

The Record of the Orally Transmitted Teachings says: Concerning the “peaceful” practices of the Lotus Sutra of the Wonderful Law and the practices carried out by Nichiren and his followers now in the Latter Day of the Law, you should understand that, when one practices the Lotus Sutra under such circumstances, difficulties will arise, and these are to be looked on as “peaceful” practices.

Point Two, on the passage “Next, the bodhisattva or mahāsattva should view all phenomena as empty, that being their true entity. They do not turn upside down, do not move, do not regress, do not revolve. They are like empty space, without innate nature, beyond the reach of all words. They are not born, do not emerge, do not arise. They are without name, without form, without true being. They are without volume, without limits, without hindrance, without barriers.”

“What a joy it is for us to have been born in the Latter Day of the Law and to have shared in the propagation of the Lotus Sutra! How pitiful are those who, though born in this time, cannot believe in this sutra!”

"The times when you run into a wall or face obstacles are actually opportunities to open up your life. Ginko Ogino (1851–1913), once said: ‘People feeling hurt has been happening for thousands of years. But getting hurt and feeling discouraged often polish people into precious gems.'[1]"

"Those who refuse to be defeated, no matter what, can polish themselves into shining gems.
Nichiren Daishonin praised Shijo Kingo—who remained true to his faith and continued to protect his fellow disciples, no matter how he was criticised—as ‘a man who never gives in to defeat' (WND-1, 955)."
