I dont use only CFL's in Veg,but i thought i would show these new big ass 300 wtt CFL's.They work great for Veg with a HPS combo.These are the biggest ive found,not sure if there are bigger.Got these @ Lowes for $16

I'm a Led in vegging and HPS in flowering grower. I'd like to add a CFL for fun&test, and I wonder if the 300w works in any fixture? I have a craftsman 'Cord Reel Work Light' that I can just plug in and hang on my closet rack with a side chain to hold the light going down; would that hi of a watt work in it? The box only sez for Incandescent.

The fixture should work. Might be an issue with heat, depending on how much space/ventilation you have.

Hmm...I've never seen 300w CFLs at any HD or Lowe's before. I think you're talking about 300w equivalent, or 65w.

I have used big cfls, and lots of them, for years as my side lighting. I recently switched over to LEDs, but I am dissapointed with them. Sure they work, but they give off as much heat as CFLs, 2 of my $100 UFO's died just after the warranty, and they lie about the wattage. They say that they are 105 watts, but a "Killawatt" meter shows they only draw 31 watts. This is fully discussed in other threads in this subforum.

Anyway, the point is, for now, I think you get more light per dollar, same heat with CFL lamps.

When I needed to cover an additional portion of my side lighting with my current grow, I added a pole of 4 x 105 cfls. they were $24 each at 1000bulbs.com. Seems too easy of a decision as we wait for LED lamps to come down to a more reasonable price.

CFLs kick ass! The best option for supplying one's self! I have been using this 200 W hydro farm panel to veg and flower. These plant here were basically 12/12 from seed, topped once and averaged 3/4 oz.

does anyone know of a good 650-700NM CFL? would like to use them for budget reasons, incendescents do very well.

the large CFL's 125w + upto 300w use a E40 sokect house hold bulb's are E27

Those are 600w equivalent lights; although that is a totally bogus measurement. They are comparing it to a 600w incandescent light, which are hugely inefficient and I don't even think they exist. And in all honesty those lamps cost more there than in my local hydro store, and that is before shipping costs. Not to mention the risk of shipping the lamp and having it break in transit. Sorry if it seems like I am attacking your post, I have seen that site mentioned a fair amount on here and wasn't sure how good they really were. There is also something to buying the CFL's that are designed for growing. I learned a long time ago to have the proper tool for the job, and sometimes the correct tool costs a bit more but it is going to do the job better and longer.

12/12 on 108w, should be going up 4x42w in two weeks. lots of LST!

She had a period of growth when I put her in 12/12, moving the lights closer to help stop that.

my question: do you think it will bud on only 3x23w + 42w?

Of course she will, the flowering reaction is not controlled by light intensity, but by the period of light to darkness. In my first ever grow I used only one 23 watt CFL and still got a half way decent harvest (for a first timer).

Had a couple 23w cfl's in a veg area... couldn't close it up as a few of them give off a nasty plastic/chemical smell. After a few days of that the plants looked like typical off-gassing victimes. *sigh*

They were GE cheapies on sale... go figure.

I'm jumping in here,
have a red greenery modified rubbermaid setup, inside I have 6-35 w and 2 40w bulbs, total 290 w. Currently running some autos in there (with 4-6 weeks left), and then switching over to photos. I have started to question whether I may be keeping young plants too close to the lights. Ususally, on start, I have them within 4 inches of the bulbs, and continue to keep them at this distance through the grow cycle. The final product are always nice, tight buds, but typically what I consider small er plants in general. My worry (real or imagined) is that I am stunting the young ones by keeping them too close, hindering final yield. Anyone care to chime in with advice on this? Should I keep the young vegging plants further away and then move them up or allow them to fill in towards the lights or should I stop worrying?
ANy advice is welcome and appreciated.

I have a 150w eco plus fluorescent grow lamp CFL with a reflector 6500k. I'm wondering is it to bright for seedlings? I also have a few (3) 26 watt 6500k CFL I can use instead. Also I plan to flower them out in 1000w hps hortilux. Am I way underpowered for veg?
