darippa - I know you didn't ask me or that your post is a few days old...but the bulb will fit and it may even fire...but long story short...no...you shouldn't use
a different bulb than what a ballast is designed for.

riverrat7 - In my estimation, yeah, CMH is, at worst, the equal of MH.

Mackawber - I am using 2 - 250w CMH's and my temps get about 80ish. Also, they have never been further away from my plants than 8-10 inches. You may need to enlarge your intakes and/or a bigger, better fan. These charts may help some.

Edit: Mackawber, check out this thread,

I was seriously contemplating using a CMH bulb for my next project until I posted here and Simba told me that the particular CMH bulbs we are talking about here are U.S only.....which certainly put a damper on the thought of using these....it just ain't feasible to get a bulb posted to the U.K everytime I want to change.
I have since done some more research and can easily get these http://www.eye.co.jp/sources/ceramic/features.html here in the U.K.
Are these bulbs the same just a different manufacturer and what would be the best colour temp to get ??

Many Thanks

Haggis.

Sorry Haggis, they are not the same and not really for us. However, Advanced Tech Lighting ships internationally.

http://advancedtechlighting.com/cdmed18.htm
250w and 400w CMH

http://advancedtechlighting.com/mhced17.htm
50w to 150w CMH

The 250w and 400w require HPS magnetic, core and coil ballasts. The 150w and lower wattages require pulse start MH magnetic, core and coil ballasts.

Thanks for the speedie reply messn'n'gommin'.

Simba mentioned that advancedtech posts worldwide, it's the thought of having to get them shipped over from the U.S every time I want a new bulb that really puts me off using them.

I had a look at the kelvin spectrums of both the Phillips and the Iwasaki, the Phillips looked best but the Iwasaki was not far off....so why are the Iwasaki's not suitable for our purpose...if you don't mind me asking ??

You guy's in the U.S just don't realise how lucky you really are....you guy's seem to have the best bulbs, the best hydro stores, the best choice of equipment....just more severe penalties and harsher jails if caught...lol.

You can mostly tell the difference between the two by the filament. The CMH's filament is encased only by the bulb. The Iwasaki's filament is encased in a protective envelope that is itself inside by the bulb. The reason for that is the Iwasaki can and has exploded and the internal glass casing is for safety reasons, so that it can be sold to the general public.

lol...Ya! Americans do seem to be a contradictory bunch.

Yeah, I did notice the different filaments....but never gave it a second thought.
So you reckon these are definately no good for what we need ??

quick question, will the e-conolight 250w hps light a 250 cmh? Please remember that it will be converted to a remote ballast as well.

This may have been asked a hundred times already. I cannot read all 2000 posts. I apologize if it has and I hate to be a kill-joy, but has anyone gotten a gram per watt from a CMH? Can someone steer me to the page or thread or testimonial?

BlindDate, if you wait a bit, I'll give you a sweet Christmas gift testimonial as to the effectiveness of CMH. Sixteen mixed girls going for 28+ grams a piece.

Zamal x Skunk #1, Mazar-I-Sharif freebie, SOL mixed pack, and a bagseed or two.

GPW is useless for measuring effectiveness.
I seriously do not understand the obsession with GPW.

I would argue that it is the ONLY measure of effectiveness.

Cmon....2000 posts and not a single weight?

Sort of.

I got 120 grams off my 250 CMH. This was after smoking along the way and water curing. Had I kept my hands off the plant and air cured, yield would've come darn close if not over.

Now, it took me about 22 weeks to do it but, you didn't ask so I won't mention it.

From my Thunk Diary: Page 18, post # 270

OK. Final talley. 120 grams (4.2 oz) of smoking buds.

Mythological pretend numbers:
Adjusted for smoking along the way - 141.2 g (5 oz)
Adjusted to air cure - 235.3 g (8.3 oz)

(Notes: I'm using a postal scale that measures in 1/4 oz or 5 gram increments. I smoked liberally along the way. I'm guessing about 20% but I calculated at 15%. I water cured for a weight loss of 85% rather than air cure's 75%. Figure does not include spindles, smaller popcorn or leaf trim for cannabutter)

Scale: PVC frame is 29 inches long
