Ceramic Metal Halide (CMH)

has anyone compared heat output? Does a 250w CMH produce the heat a 150w hps would? Or is the scale larger than this? Just want to get a rough idea how much less heat are we talking here with CMH.

If a small cab is able to handle heat from a 150w hps, is it going to be able to handle a 250w CMH, what is the highest watt it can handle. What CMH wattage is recommended for a cab that was built for 150w HPS?

I went from 150 HPS to 250 CMH. Sorry to say I never measured temps but, heat increase was dramatic. Long boring flu induced story... wasted $300 on an inline fan and means to silence it when all I needed was another intake hole to go with my $10 axial fan. D'OH!

You don't say how small your cab is, mines 22x29x54. My lamp is exposed and, because I'm in a freezer, I may be holding on to more heat than you would.

What size cab you got? Lamp minimum is considered to be 50 watts per sq ft. Theoretically CFM=watts/4. I'm running 56 watts per sq ft. My axial fan pushes 76 ( as opposed to the recommended 62.5) Because your box probably isn't insulated as my freezer is, it will act as a giant radiator. Coupled with proper airflow and possibly a cool tube or enclosed air cooled hood, you should be OK. As long as you're not talking about a PC case.

The 50, 70, 100, 150 CMH bulbs are medium base. Just get a 6 kV rated socket from businiess lights or a local supply house or, failing that, any ceramic socket at Home De Pot.

I've got a pick of the socket in my Sun System...somewhere.

en, id go 2 250 cmh (your gonna need that for the 22" deep) (thats if you only have cmh no CFL) (thats also assuming using full area)
if your not using full area (shorter deepth) 3 150s would be prim.. but at full 22 min is 250..
150 watters with mini air cooled hoods .5 inchis from plant top.. but you would want higher to get the throw.. (id stay with 2 250s..)..
En, youll need a Medium. ONLY USE PULSE RATED SOCKET< Homedepot, lowes does not sell them DO NOT USE NON PV RATED SOCKETS>

Messn, ya the 400s would be allot more heat to deal with (22 is narrow)
i think you chose well.
my exp for inc F to M ratio keep cooler from seedling to early flower (not cold)..
great ballast case. cheap and air cool-able..If not aircooling then no lid..

Az, as always NICE pics..

for vegging for mini cabs im still on cmh.. even at low wattages but i wouldnt go to 50 unless u have to.. (25W for ultra mini grows only)

Toby, You cant really compare the 150 hps to 250 cmh.. you could easily say a 250 will not heat up your room as much as a 250 hps..
and you can easily say a 150 cmh wont heat up your cab as much as 150 hps..

NoCal, If you like them get another.. Howard ballasts (if you warranty there is no shipping charges) it looks like yours is a htg copy of SS some model.. and its one of the better ballast case designs as it keeps ignior and cap away from ballast core.
(you could easily cool a diy one much better by Permanently attaching a cpu fan to the core.. Ill post a thread on it Soon

Socket Q again..
ONLY USE PULSE RATED SOCKET With CMH HPS MH
< Homedepot, lowes does not sell them DO NOT USE NON PV RATED SOCKETS>
the ones you can buy at HD and lowes are not High temp rated and will crack and can ARC during moist conditions and over time can Fall apart... and again not PV rated.. as always stay safe never skimp on Power or other safety gear..

Validation! I am humbled.

:off2: Temps are running between mid 60's and mid 70's. Just started week 4 with 4' 80W's cool white flouro's on 14/10. Using MG moisture control and feeding with 1/2 strength fish emulsion every third watering every 5 days or so. rH about 50-55% with a low of about mid 40's and a high of about mid 60's. We shall see what we shall see.

Checked my email Sat. and was told bulb shipped Wed. and will get here this Wed. original email said Sat. delivery date. But is ok as I am not ready for them anyway, so haven't completed ballast kit build yet. Smallest plant is just now showing 4th leaf set but the largest is already on it's starting it's 6th! But, I should be up and running with the CMH bulbs by late next week. :jerkit:

Namaste, mess

Nice job Doug!!!! How was the smoke?

Just for those folks that have been claiming that the CMH causes too much leaf and all that jazzz.

Now I have to admit that I burned the **** out of these girls playing with new nutes and such.

Alriiight, so my socket just got in the mail and i couldn't be giddier. Gonna wire it up now to do a test burn. What kinda cord do I need to lengthen the distance b/w the lamp socket and the ballast? 70w CMH bulb and ballast all from advancedtechlighting.com great site. EXCELLENT customer service.

Azeotrope-Thanks, Nice plants on your end as well looks like you have a nice harvest coming up. What strains you got going on? What lights are you running?~ The cmh causes less leaf imho. My prev. grow was under a 250 hps with and I can honestly say my yield was much higher and the buds where much denser with the cmh. The buds tasted great as well very skunky/musty taste makes most of my buddy and my self who are seasoned smokers cough pretty hard. It was flushed for 11 days and burns nice and white. The high is pretty stony and locks me right to my seat.
FreezerBoy-Heard about the cool 4.2 oz you pulled in that fridge Nice Work! People really underestimate the cmh it is great for personal use although I smoke much more than I grow I was thinking of grabbing another 250 cmh I think that would do it ;)

Ok...When your setting up your ballast? Do I Really NEED to have it in its own metal box? What is the point? Why cant I wire it up...and leave it like that where I want it....I"m having issues finding room for the ballast where i want it if its going to have to be in a box.....

Is it really needed? The box will also kill my cooling idea for it.
