Where can I get an HTG DIY ballast kit? I can't find it on the HTG site, nor google. Did they discontinue them?

do CMH bulbs really run cooler than HPS? if so would a 400w CMH bulb put out more heat then a 250w HPS? if so how much more? i have a 30"Lx22"Wx50"H grow box an im either gonna get a 250w or 400w ballast to run a CMH but not sure if i can cool a 400w CMH. i haven 330w of CFL with no problems( no hood or fixture).

I bought a 400 W ballast kit, the Venture from businesslights.com and then got an enclosure from 1000bulbs.com for about 20-25 bucks. I had to call them, the sales rep had to find it, but he did.

cfl,, 2'x2'xwhatever hight.. id go no bigger than 250..cmh and will produce nicely ..
if you have 330 of cfl you depending on MFR and Model.. you are about same heat from 250cmh bulb.. (remote mount the ballast, at least at top of cab)
you should get a reflector..no batwing.. even a Baking Tin is decent..

im gonna get an air cooled hood for the CMH, euro reflector(6in air holes). i meant that i dont use one now. with CMH is there still the 1g per watt or is it more or less? what could i yield with a 250CMH min/max if i do 4-6 plants(sog) in 3gal containers useing fox farm nutes an soil?

i duno which reflector u speak of..
but with cmh and even a 400 u could get away with 4"holes..
id ditch the soil.. and go to coco..Bcuzz Bounce (with some Higromite mixed in) and Bio-NRG and youll get some Good tasty harvests.. yield will not be as high as some Chem nutes but well worth the small trade off...dudit started with NRG but ran out.. so now on chem from bcuzz
330wcfl to 250cmh you wont ever consider cfl again..
thats the best i can tell ya.. to many variables, however not one Real complaint about Yield or Under performing in 60pages.

So a 400W CMH runs fine on a Venture 400W HPS Ballast? Anyone have experience with that setup? Would I get the 480V/120T, or the Quad Tap ballast? Also, what reflector do you recommend for a 400W CMH, that is inexpensive and air cooled? (4", horizontal OR vertical venting is fine).

this is the reflector, so did you mean that with a 6in air cooled hood i could use a 400w CMH.

I finally put everything together and in the cabin. I must say WOW! This 400W CMH is really bright! My ballast is able to power it up fully in about 20-25 seconds and then it's just painful to look at. I've grown with a 1000W Hps and with all that yellow light it still wasn't as hard to look at.

I can't wait to germinate my maui wowie and some other goodies!

Wow, so these CMH bulbs are finally available for regular 150 watt HPS ballasts ? Somebody just made me aware of this on the 150 HPS forum.

They must have just started selling them. I just want to double check that these 150 watt bulbs will work in a standard 150 watt HPS ballast ?

I assume that the unprotected versions are the ones to buy right ?

If yes, then this is good news, and I just might be getting one of these bulbs for my next grow.

I can only imagine ... my 250 felt like I was going snow blind at first. I've gotten used to it.

Well I just finished wiring up my ballast. The first time i turned it on, everything worked just fine. Now all that comes out is a slightly louder humm from the ballast, no light, ideas?
I remember something about people having to buy a new ignitor with HTG ballasts? I hope not.

EDIT: OK, it fired up again, but i had to wait 10 min (sorry after all that work i wasn't in the mood to wait). Seems like it only wants to work some of the time.
If i turn it off then try to turn it back on again, it wont fire. My guess is that this ballast+light combo does not like to be turned off and on again, but for 12/12 i hope it will work.

Just roll back a bit in this thread and you will find that we have discussed re-fire times. You should not short cycle any bulb. This bulb needs 15-30minutes before refiring. I don't re-fire until the bulb and socket are both at room temp.

Good luck and let us know if we can help more.

Alrighty, ill be sure to report back on it tomorrow. Gotta shove that 80mm comp fan in there to cool the ballast.

The only thing I'm curious about what you said is, i saw a video simba made where he was doing rapid on/off changes on a CMH without much of an issue. I suppose he had a higher quality ballast though.
Thanks a lot, everything else has been going right, so this really had me going.

It may have been a 150w or smaller on a electronic (specifcally engineered for cmh). The electronics can make that happen sometimes. All in all it is not good for the bulb.

lol thats funny how htg are out of ballasts. Htg was actually the cheapest place i could find a kit like that and i was going to get one, but they dont ship across the border so i had to hunt one down on ebay. DOnt worry they will be back i am sure, i bet they love the business.

green nah the mhc are pulse start.. not hps yet

dont take that video of what you can do..
It Kills the bulbs and dramatically shortens life.
these lamps are actually designed to be operated 24/7 but with that said they have no problems even going down to 6/18 yes 6/18 but they are NOT HOT-Restrike Rated
CMH should be treated the same as MH as far as cycling even though they run on HPS IE the refire timing>>HPS lamps arent even considered Hot Restrike Unless they have 2 arc tubes side by side.. some MH are Hot Restrike,

ya cool that ballast i see its surrounded by wood.. make sure you get air flowing in there
