Ceramic Metal Halide (CMH)

I've joined the 860w CMD club. Bulb came with a few glass shards rattling around inside the outer sleeve as well as what looks like green patina'd corossion where the glass is annealed to the socket. Wanted the expert opinion before I went plugging it in. I'll get photos later.

Fire it up, vertical orientation only. The tiny glass shards are typical of the 860's & 330's I received, along with a bit of green where the base & glass meet. I'd watch it closely for the first half hour or so as some of the 330's strobed insanely when warmed up. Obviously not good. They're protected lamps, open fixture rated, so the chances of anything going horribly wrong are small.

Hey everyone,

So I've been doing a lot of reading on CDM and am getting ready to make the plunge. I'm still deciding between the combo kit from Advanced Lighting or the kit from GEL.

What are the differences between the Allstart CDM mogul bulb Advanced Lighting provides and the PGZ18 bulb GEL provides? Is one newer, better in some way, etc?

My understanding is that the GEL ballast is better but the combo kit from Advanced Lighting is about $70 cheaper.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Advanced Lighting seems to be having some issues. It took almost a month for them to mail me my bulb, and only two days of that was spent in the actual mail. A week after I paid a shipping label was created and it sat there unsent for a further 3 weeks. I called and e-mailed about it a couple weeks before they mailed it but received no call back and no e-mail back. It is the sort of service that does not leave one confident.

I read the first 100 pages of this thread a year ago, and I've read the last 30-40 pages the last few days, but I still have questions...

I have 2500W to spend on CMH - what equals 8 x 315watts and a high investment in both bulbs and ballasts. What do I have to choose from in bigger bulbs?

860w is the big one, I don't know if there's anything between the 315w and the 860w. You could go over a little and get 3 860w lamps.

I have 3000w when using 80% of the circuit, so I think 3 x 860 would be ok.
Are these bulbs also found in agro/regular, and open/closed fixture models?

Where can I find these bulbs, and ballast, preferable in Europe?

Yeah he hasn't responded to any of my voicemails or emails. I am a little worried about receiving my package in a somewhat timely manner and any potential support issues.

That being said, it is over $70 cheaper per unit (especially when you buy more than 1 unit). I may be willing to deal with some of the lack of customer support issues if the only difference is the GEL ballast being better. If the bulbs that GEL provides are better, then I would probably just go with them.

My 860 fired up flawlessly. Glad to have it, plants are looking noticably happier 24h into switching. My very old HPS bulb was ready to be phased out. Heat output seeme fine atm but we'll see in high summer.

They are spendy, but worth it. Power bill went down immediately.
Great customer service. The guy will meet me on the weekends or stop by my house if I have questions or issues.

I've been running the same Phillips 400 CMH I think 8 years but I havn't been growing indoors the whole time! I'm totally out of touch on the new bulbs & ballast! I wanna run indoor this year, my bulbs are gonna burn out, & I'm running out of bulbs. I've used them as suplimental lighting 4k CMH. How should I proceed with the change out?

Since this thread has grown to such monumental proportions and goes in many directions, I put together a thread dedicated to the 315w and it's variants - it's linked in the top line of my sig. I don't have any recent experience with the other lamps and options, so hopefully some other contributors can help you out.

OK, I am considering getting the ATL 220$ kit.
I emailed them to see how much they would sell me a kit for without the step up trans as I have 240V in my room already.
Then I got to thinking, HOW will I put a timer on a ballast wired to 240 V ???

So, I emailed them 3 times and called and left a message this morning.
Are they still in business?
I'd really like to give them some $$$???

Yeah, that'd be enough to turn me off. What if an issue pops up? I mean, we all love holding our dick in our hand, but that's not how I want to look if something goes fizzle-pop.
