I had read this thread up until the last few pages and I posted my question about 2 400's in a 2x4 when the used 250's weren't gonna pan out. I came back to finish up and saw Anti's post about goofs who post questions where the answer was back just three pages. Having lurked for a while and noticing this very same phenomena, you can imagine my chagrin at committing the very same offense of leapage before lookage.
My humble apologies to all for adding tedium to a very interesting thread. Anti is spot on.
BTW @ Pinball Wizard. I'm interested in your results as yours sounds to be the exact lighting setup I'll be using as soon as I can get Wifey's damn clothes out of the closet. As her being a non smoker, this is a tough sell but her fibromyalgia is getting worse and the meds that do nothing useful are getting more expensive. I had to chuckle a bit when she said "I honestly don't see why anyone would smoke this... I don't feel a thing..." as she got up and literally staggered from the room. Hard to imagine a California kid growing up in the 70's never smoking herb. Bless her geeky little heart,but I digress...
I understand if your not inclined to post your results as this is probably old hat stuff to you but I'm interested in your methods to handle heat and smell issues in just this kind of space. I have a pretty good idea of what I'm going to do from my reading but book-larning and experience are two different critters.

The first several times I smoked I got nothing out of it. My friends were like "oh we're getting you high tonight... and packed several bowls in a bong and passed them to me... smoked it all and felt nothing.
Then one day on the way to a concert I shared a joint with 4 people and got stoned out of my mind.
After that, it works every time unless it's shitty weed.

Everything is in my profile album...enjoy. The closet is in a empty dark room. I only need to control the temps in the room. H/Vac does that. And I have no odor control. The house is off-limits to everybody.

Yeah , it's easy to forget that it's a recognition thing at the first. I can remember sitting in my buddy Neal's bedroom listening to this new record 'Are You Experienced' by some weird looking English dude and smoking for the first time. Nothing. Shit music too. After a walk down the corner store where they had the most insanely hilarious vibrantly colored jellybeans and the vaguely rippling lawns on the way back, we gave the bowl and Mr. Hendrix another go...
Much different result this time. I NEEDED this record.
This record was forever banned from the ridiculously expensive (for a working Joe) Grundig stereo that Pops bought for his classical and big band/ ballroom dancing records that was reserved for 'real music' and not for 'doped up electric noise'.
Mom would let me sneak a few in from time to time because she loved Tom Rush and a few other folkies.
Mom would have made a great Bohemian. Pops, despite his being an artist, er...not so much.
I must have inherited his love of frugal 'alternative engineering' and only spending a dime when you get a dollars return.
CMH seems to fit that bill nicely for it's far larger usable light spectrum and encouraging a plant's overall health and disease resistance, if not a noticeable yield increase. It just seems to make sense.
If anyone has done side by side comparison tests, I would like to see them, so feel free to post links to anything that would bear this out. Since I'll be starting from scratch and been horrified by the plant infirmary section, (a closet full of plant killing thrips and other assorted nasties kinda freaks me out. I really hate big bug movies.) I figure the best way not to get them is having healthy plants and an environment that won't support em.

I can understand why commercial growers use HPS over CMH, even if for no other reason than higher intensities. But, for personal use growers out for quality...a lot of people still have me scratching my head!

Glad to see this thread still moving along! Recent results with a 250w 4k (on a core and coil magnetic) and a 150w 3k (on a 400hz square wave digital) have been great in a cab grow. Might switch it up and go with a 150w 4k and a 250w HPS for fun.... Maybe a 150w HPS and the 250w 4k CMH????? Not sure. Kind of fun mixing it up. Ideally, I think the 150w 3k and 250w 4k are a great pair in a 30"W X 22"D cab. I have the gear to run a 400w 4k in there but there is no need.

Ordered the GE 3k 250w CMH today. Going to give it a go paired up with a vertically hung 150w 3k Philips CMH for 5 square feet of coverage during flower....... I'll let you all know. I can't help but wonder why GE's 250w and 400w are over $100.00 ?????? Oh well

And to let all know Santa brought me a 400 watt hps magnetic coil ballast and 4 sided open reflector...the CMH bulb is on it's way from Light supply for $50 shipping included...but don't worry Simba I will use you when I order my next 2 for the free hps bulbs....
And once installed flipping to 12/12
So we will see this cmh thing firsthand...I am confident I will be pleased

Currently running 600 hps & 400CMH in separate hoods. If I have both hoods at same height will I get proper penetration with 400CMH is it to high? Currenly have my 400 hood a little closer to canopy but it blocks some of the light from the 600. Should I have both lights at equal height? Also if I had a 1000whps with 400cmh does it make sense to get one of those dual light hoods?

If at all possible, are you rotating your plants? The reason I ask, if you're already alternating the lamp height, you should be ok as long as you're changing plant position regularly from one lamp intensity to the other.
The few grows I've seen where anyone was using a 1000w HPS with a 400w CMH, had the CMH between two 1000w'ers and lower than either to offset the relative penetrating power of the 1000w.
