Ceramic Metal Halide (CMH)

Stankie

Thank you for the link Stankie..

No prob headache. They shipped mine next day, received 3 days later. Lamp was packaged well and works great.

They actually have a cheaper one, by about $10. I'd rather spend the extra $, get the Philips, and not have to worry about manufacturing quality and/or fire hazard.

They also have the vertical 400 model, as well as the 250 in both HOR and V for about 8$ more than the 400 lamps.

Ok i need some expertise please, if someone may.

I understand that CMH can only be run on a magnetic ballast, no larger then 400 watt. Perfect. I run a 400w ballast.

My only concern is will mine work ? It is a remote ballast. Whether digital or magnetic i do not know.

I have a Sun System 10 Crop Master 400W Switchable

Can i run a Ceramic Metal Halide off of this ballast on the HPS setting ?

Thank you in advance.

I am looking to improve the light spectrum as i am unhappy with the HPS spectrum. If i can simply put a CMH bulb in that would make my day.

The green bud has CFL's around it.

Ok i think i ahve already answered my own question but would like confirmation before i buy a new bulb and mess something up.

My ballast is ANSI S51/M59 Rated.

According to this information it should work, i think.

To find out if your ballast will fire the 400CMH, look on the ballast and it will have numbers. You need to clearly see S51
If that nomenclature is on the sticker, it is a magnetic 400watt High Pressure Sodium ballast that will also fire the 400 watt Ceramic Metal Halide.

hey i have a quick question if anyone can anwser it i was wondering if a lithonia lighting bay light. can their ballasts support the cmh bulb. the ballast i want is 400 watts so im just wondering if it uses a magnetic ballast or not. has anyone used this ballast with their cmh setup? thanks for the help guys

Never heard of the company, but a google search tells me that Lithonia Lighting Bay Lights in the 400w variety are Metal Halide... so that would be a no.

Your mileage may vary.

Which brings us to my question.
This guy was selling a bunch of used 250w high bays for 35 bux just like glass's link but he was claiming that the burned both metal halide and HPS both. This sounded weird to me so a bit of digging finds out this is not so. MH only, no good for CMH. A little more snooping around brings me to Advanced Lighting and he's got Altos and a 5 yr warrantee Howard ballast for cheaper than anyone (ballast anyway).
It's a whole whopping $18 more bux to go from a 2-250w with a 2 light and ballast 400 W set up for my 2'x4'x7'-6" closet with 5-7" for flowering and the veg space and moms above. This would be overkill with HPS but from the lower lumen output of CMH it will get me about 7400 mean lumens per square ft. which sounds about perfect to me for nice even lighting for a confined space.
I really like the spectral graphs of CMH as compared to the HPS. This makes it a no brainer for starting out with new equiptment to get a nice little crop.
The problem is I can't get my brain around 800 w in a small space like that. The numbers seem right but even with direct light venting to outside is this going to be manageable?

800 w just seems scary to me. They bake repainted cars with that much light. I figure I'll use 4-2' linear t5s for veg.
Is this 7400 mean lumens per square foot too much?

I use two 400 watt lights in a 2x4x9ft closet. I was using two 400 CMH bulbs; but one bulb burned out. Now I use one HPS and one CMH. 7 flowering females: maxed out on room...:dance013:..week #2

I use HO T5's for the first 3 weeks vegging.

just blew the second bulb in two years. This one was only running 12s for less than 10 months. I will not make anymore CMH purchases.

Hey Pinball,
Your kids look pretty happy in there so I guess I'd be okay. Just seems like a lotta light if you think in HPS lumens. I wouldn't want to burn the little nippers. Do you notice a difference between the CMH and HPS ie. less stretch, fuller buds? I don't have a comparison as I just grew some bagseed outside many years ago.

Looks just like my closet...without the plants yet :)
Wow, 3 week veg fills a closet fast. I guess my 6 plant plan will work nicely for space for now. Undoubtedly, If I'm not a latent plant-killer, I might go SOG crazy and try to stuff more in after I know what I'm doing. Or not. That set up you have looks pretty fine to me. I'd be real happy with that turnout.

Thanks for the heads up, I feel better now not bumping around in the dark.

Um,
2 months out of a $60 buck bulb?

That ain't real inspiring. Does this happen a lot with a Philips retro-white CMH?

available locally at your Lighting/Electrical Supply store walk in with the appropriate phillips serial number and order a couple. as they were originally designed for lighting warehouses and public spaces not growing weed no one will think you are buying for a grow or care.
