is cmh better than mh for veg anyone? I know that a lot of you are using them straight through but I was wondering if the standard mh would be better for veg if one ahd an extra mh ballast laying around. Thanks!

I think simba said CMH has more blue then even a hortilux blue MH, and the blue MH light drops off quickly

Does the 400w CMH need to be behind a glass shield?
Would the glass shield on a PL light contain the glass incase the 400 CMH blows?

Phillips CMH is rated for open fixtures but u
always safer with the extra glass;
up 2 ur desire........

I am interested in some input on reflector choices for use with the 400W CMH. I will be running eight of these bulbs in a growroom that is 7' x 8' with a 10' ceiling height. I will be growing fairly tall sativas that will reach around 6'-7' in height. I am inclined to go with an open reflector in order to maximize my UV. I was originally going to use 4 large Adjust-A-Wings with the optional second socket assembly thus having two bulbs per reflector. Thoughts please?

that sounds good.. although i may be inclined not to double the lamps in the reflectors (that would be your call)

Probably not a good idea to use 400 watter, if you're going to grow tall plants. You'd be better served going with three 1000 watters in that space, if you want to grow monsters. The only way that using 400w bulbs would be very profitable in that large of a space would be short plants with a big canopy. SOG or ScrOG.

Couldn't quite find the right search terms for this thread for the question I have. Sorry if it's been covered earlier.

The way my cab's ventilation is set up, I can't air cool a hood, but the cab itself has adequate ventilation. If I put a 400w cmh in a Super Sun w/a lens and only used the side vents for cooling, would that be too much heat for a 400w? In other words, are cmh lamps heat sensitive other than when trying to re-strike? I've got that covered with an on-delay timer but I need a better quality reflector.

Anyone know where you can get the 400w Phillips Retro White CMH lamp in Canada?

If you have a grow shop in town they can source one, just bring in the phillips part number. I convinced my local store to bring in a case and they have been stocking them ever since!

I use a 400w CMH in a 2'x2' footprint, with a Super Sun (1) reflector....I leave the glass shield off the reflector, the side vents open, and just blow a small circulation fan at the bulb ;)

granted, I do have a 8"HO can pulling air out of the tent....

but here's the thing. If youre not going to aircool the hood (and the SS1 isnt the most efficient for aircooling anyhow, only 4" flange with an obstruction just inside the well), id definately roll with the glass off. Ill allow the heat to disperse more naturally, and will increase the amount of light reaching your plants by several percent (ive seen/heard up to about 7 or 8 percent).

if your ventilation can handle the temps, give it to them straight. If you have to put a shield on, youre better off trying to pull air through the reflector in an aircooling fashion ;)

a super sun 1 with 4" holes are well past big enough..
with a 4" pc fan you can keep the hood COLD to the Touch..

Yeah I asked most every hyrdo store, plus all commercial/industrial lighting sellers and couldn't find it, or get anyone to order it for me. So in the end I got it shipped from the US.

Sorry if this is off topic but I'm running cmh 400 and am looking for the time delay schematic that I found mentioned else where. Looked around page 90 through 120 only found mention of parts.

well i just got my reflector today, hydrofarm daystar ac for the 400w cmh ill be using but i just figured out that the reflector has a proprietary plug that needs to either be wired manually to a mag ballast from say adv. tech. or just connected to one of their xtrasun ballasts (also manufactured by hydrofarm) or a seperate brand like powerhouse which makes "high quality" mag ballasts.

the xtrasun ballast runs at 60hz as well as the powerhouse, and both have warranties which exceed 3 years and i only plan to keep this setup for 3 years so all is well. im really just asking for some confirmation that i can run cmh with these restraints

You could try something like this:

It is an all-weather alloy (read: easy to drill) outlet box that comes with four plugs for the unused half inch holes and two mounting screws (you will need two large washers for the mounting screws), about $4. The two inside screw holes lined up perfectly with the slots on the hood support frame. The connectors have a rubber "gasket" I ran the wiring through and were about $3 each. Two 2 inch screws (room for centering the bulb), six large washers and two smaller (for the socket support), six nuts, about $2 or so. (Note the two drilled holes) I tried butchering a blank wall plate to cover the back but it restricted any adjustments. But, then again no one else has access to my little closet, so I just left them off...for now.

Hope this helps.

Namaste, mess

I know you guys have most likely already covered this but I have a Sunlight supply switchable ballast. Here is the info...

ss-10 hps400 switchable relamp with 400w type s51 120v 4amp 60hrz
ss-10 mh400 switchable relamp with 400w type m59 120v 4amp 60hrz

Can I use a CMH bulb with this ballast?
