Ceramic Metal Halide (CMH)

I personally flower with a HPS but for the smaller setups I think they are great one light one grow.....but if your doing perpetual or anything over 400w i wouldn't recommend...

about how much cooler do these run than HPS? I have a homebox small (31" x 31" x 63")... I'd like to run 400w..but I'm worried that might be overkill in the smaller space.

I think I read the 400w CMH isn't that much hotter than the 250 CMH... so i guess the million dollar question is, how much cooler than a 400 HPS? Is the 400 CMH closer in temp to a 250W HPS? If so, I think I can go w/ 400w CMH.

Thanks for any input/insight!

Is it possible to run a 250 CMH on an ANSI S51 Ballast (an HPS mag ballast for 400W) or is it proper to ONLY run it on the S50? I'm assuming that as long as you are over rated on the ballast you are OK? I've searched all over for an answer on this one. Anyone?

vorsprung, I have a 400wCMH and a 150wHPS in a 2'x2'x63" flower space. It is easily doable.

how are you venting (edit: n/m just checked your cab out..see edit note below). I think I will need to add 6" flange-fittings to the sides of my homebox and separate the airflow from the CMH / vented reflector from the rest of the tent.

Also, I will be adding a room-to-room wall fan to pull cold A/C air in from the living room and use a 4" fan to suck that in the intake at the bottom, so i'm not re-sucking the hot vented CMH air.

That should work in theory, right? It sucks because ambient temp in the bedroom gets up to ~90 degrees sometimes in the summer, so I MUST bring in that A/C air from the living room. I'm worried the CMH exhaust coupled with 90 degree ambient might make the bedroom insanely hot..... maybe I should look at portable AC to cool the room... ahhhh these damn grows... "if you give a mouse a cookie..."

edit: hoosier just checked out the cab in question. my oh my what a nice feat of engineering!

So is a standard HPS better than the CMH for flowering?

I would say no...
but surely there still is more hidden potential in the CDM/CMH

I just got done with a 150W CDM-TD (830) test grow and I`m more then pleased.
my yield was more then 1g/W and that with only 150W.:woohoo:

but, to be honest and fair...
a 150W HPS "grower" can do the same, it still depends on the "grower" ;)

one thing I can say for sure, under CDM/CMH my plants grow healthier and "greener" :chin:
I think the whole secret, is just the combination of CMH & HPS for a higher yield.
That will be my next test...

got a question.

right now im running the CMH. my ballast can do both HPS and MH. i have it set to HPS cause thats what was posted it can run on. would there be any difference if it was set to MH?

also would it be better to switch to HPS bulb during flower? i hear that MH makes more leafy buds then HPS....

My 400 CMH bulb ran about 5 degrees cooler than my 400 HPS hortilux bulb.....so I assume a 250 watt CMH bulb, would be cooler than a 250 HPS bulb.

I know you was looking for exact temps...that, I don't know...I can only compare.

Be careful running digital sales rep from Phillips bulb said they will blow bulb use magnetic hps......just a word of caution

Just because it is a switchable ballast does not mean it is digital. All my sunsystem Xs are switchable, but I keep them all on HPS.

I am running 1200w on a mover, 2 400w CMH and 1 400w hortilux. I can already see that the adding the HPS is going to be a detriment. I am going to let a full cycle go through, but I already want to go back to 100% CMH.

the 400w cmh is only a buck or 2 more then the 250w cmh
much more light for your money and I've heard that the 250
and the 400 produce about the same heat is this so?

ya its magnetic and is set on HPS. guess ill keep it there since i dont want it to blow up.. lol

what about the thing about the flowering and plants being more leafy with a MH? is that true also for a CHM? would it be better to switch to a HPS just for flower?

I personally would use cmh thru your veg and then use HPS for Flower....that said this is CMH thread and some people swear by it...it cant speak from experience just what ive read...i run MH and HPS.....

Buds are nice and tight with CMH. Not at all like a MH grow. Not even comparable.
The light causes most bud's calyx's to swell more than HPS does. I can't say for certain about the yield, but the quality of the bud is superior, and I am convinced of that.

Some have bud luck with things, and often times this bad luck will filter through to the rest of their lives...take Pwistle for a good example....I'm figgering he screws up most things he touches. And misery so loves miserable company.
And I don't know that he is a complete screw-up...but when it comes to knowledge about light spectrum and lamps he is clueless, and should probably just be put on permanent ignore.
But, that's just MO.

I've used both, and for me personally, the plants under the CMH tend to stay healthier and are more desease resistant. I think the spectral graph has everything to do w/ it...imo Full spectrum is the way to go...

Just because you cant grow, doesn't mean a full spectrum bulb is the way to go. Doesn't matter, I am currently running a CMH vs. HPS comparison. So there will be no debating in about four months.
