Your method works so well they might make it illegal.

OH SHIT. It is illegal

Just kidding, I'm taking a second look at the bag of perlite sitting outside the back door.

If roots like it I like it.

Then figure out where you went wrong? It works quite well.

I am looking at both perlite in cell trays and rockwool as well and they seem to be equivalent. I like this method bc you can reuse the trays and just need to buy more perlite, which is cheaper than rockwool cubes.

The critical factors I can tell are:
1. maintaining moisture to the stems without completely wetting them
2. maintaining humidity -- what % humidity is ideal though?
3. maintaining temperatures -- I've seen that around 75-80*F is ideal.

Anyone have any other advice on these or other elements?

1. That's the beauty of perlite, it wicks. Two inches of perlite (whether loose or in flats) sitting in 1/4 to 1/2" water.

2. No need. Keep the dome closed over night when planting (or not if controlling room RH within range), and taper off from there.

3. Correct.

4. Ensure bottom of cutting is well (1/2") above water line.

Rock wool works great. The only drawbacks are the high water holding capacity and unsightly appearance of cubes at plant base ;)

perlite is the perfect medium for cloning....better than anything else I have tried over many many many years....and you can get it cheap at home depot..no need for fancy plugs and gizmos.....yeehaw

Your post is a fantastic contribution to this thread. Thanks so much for this kernel of wisdom.

The cells have holes in the bottom I'm assuming. To wick water? I have a tray, dome and a bunch of plastic Dixie cups
