i also started doing oil back in the early 90's but from hash since that was what we had back then in sweden - using acethone (yuk!) and burning of the fumes - oldschool - very nasty - but worked - but the quality was crap.
later on i tried BHO about 10 years ago - and since then i have no doubt it is the most effective and tastiest way of making oil.
i allways do it outdoors - i use a gasmask i got, a first class GAS and DUST mask filter with double carbon chambers
(its from sweden great stuff, air passes first thru microparticle filter then the carbon) wich i use sometimes if the wind is not strong enough to make me feel ok about it.
a windy day outdoors is the best enviroment - for low explosion risk etc
i have to give u a good point for creative use of a silicon gun!! awesome.. i got to aply that to next contrapcion.
i heard somewhere terpenoids start evaporating at already 70 degrees celsius and different terpenoids evaporate at different temperatures. obviously this must affect the high - this is obvious.
i read the thread - i certainly wish i could get colibri butane here in where i live.. i have to do with what i can get i have been in touch with a UK butane lighter gas company who was prepared to ship it - but the shipping for a few boxes of cans was several hundreds of euros.. so i leave that for the future.. might be an idea to do joined purchase maybe...
HMK and HBonPCP are old friends from the OG times. also tamethethane - where everheis now.
i allways cut my buds up with scissors to tiny chunks - a bit rugher than for a spliff - but its still pretty fine.
the oils comes out different depending on phenos etc - some oil wont go hard how ever much it is heated afterwards - or let to dry.
the oil that has turned out hardest for me is a specific pheno - it gets as hard - even if its leaf or bud in the tube. and i have also done an BHO extraction after drysieveing the trim for 3 times - and still get a hard oil.
runny oil i have only got from medium potent marijuana. it seems in low potency marijuana - alot of the content in the trichomes is terpenoids and less THC - so even though there is a lot of resin it still wont make u as high. and the terpenoids might be the part making it runny. just my thoughts.. but less potent BHO is also usually less FLAVOURFULL.. so it gets complicated to try to find some logic in all this.
i think mostly it is a question of potency/pheno to get hard oil.
the plant we use is SSH x PTK and the oil is the same even if its grown outdoors or indoors.
one thing is true - the better the material going into the tube the better the oil
an other pheno of the same plant wont give as hard oil.
also i got to say the pheno of ssh x ptk that gives us the hardest oil gets very hard nugs.
ah - instead of coffee filter i use active carbon painting masks - the "paper" ones - who got a few layers of paper/carbon/and what not. 3M makes them. i cut them and tie it around the tube with steel wire.
could babble on for ever about BHO hehe - we have even tried liqiud oxygen extracion.
the reason i like the resin harder is its easier to handle - u can use it like a indian first class charras/cream - roll it into strings and then cut it with a knife to mix in the spliff
i have not tried vaping oil - bonging it yes
the purgings we do is pretty much the same - its the question of stopping before it gets too hot - i dont think i ever let it get more than about 70 C degrees at max.

i got some where in my gallery some pics from last year.. lets see if i can find any
this is from bad outdoor grown white widow - we bough 100grams - and turned it into oil. very runny - but nice colour.
this is BHO cristals from scraping the SSH x PTK pheno (our keeper for life hehe) trim was used.
later i turned part of it into a ball with some kif of same pheno - it is necesary to heat it with a lighter to do it.
same oil as before when evaporating.
my setup - but now with 3 tubes - pyrex tray is missing
i mixed later some of that oil with some nice 00 from chauen hehe
