Canna has been making tests to see how to improve the yields in coco-growing.

the most interesting part of the conclusion of the tests - is the fact...

CANNA NOW claims bigger yields IF watering only once a day!!!!

the say the fact the coco gets about 3% more air in the substrate watering more seldom and letting the plants USE UP the water - gives more intesive rooting and that in turn makes the UPTAKE of nutricions better for the plant.

they actually claim 6-10% HIGHER YIELDS watering only once a day!!!!!

it means DRIP IRRIGATION less often MEANS BIGGER YIELDS.

i know this is going to stir up some movement i bet!

You're very perspicacious Just read that section on the PDF (good article) I'm surprised by the study. I was going to drip a few times daily, but was re-thinking that approach after PM'g Blindate and reading his post he linked me to. He irrigates once per day, run to waste.
I'm gonna do a side by side on this to see for myself. The article makes sense, good read.

i got to add that in the end of the article it does say - that when the plants are bigger watering twice a day works well - just to make sure the coco DOES not dry up

using up the water and still maintain the necesary level of humidity is the key it seems.

some thoughts about the article:

* - so if there is plants that use a lot of water i gues it means this got to be modified to adjust the frequeny.
* this is mainly i think NOT to over saturate the substrate with water since since the law of fysics doesnt allow water to contain more air than the temps of the water allows and makes possible - the 3% more of air the less watering makes gives more air than WHAT WATER can give only.
* 3% is a VERY FINE LINE..
* in theory this sounds pretty - but how do u really control it in reality. not all setups would work with watering once a day etc etc..

Many of those points (and more) were raised in the "coco/perlite" thread (and others)....anything that purportedly increases yield catches my eye Can't wait to do a water frequency side by side...

I am learning the hard way that less is better. I have been going crazy trying to figure out why some of my plants in flower have been struggling to fill out and beef up. After much thought and research....it seems that since I switched to pure coco( bonticare 5kg compressed bale) I have run into this problem. The plants do great in veg hand watered only when needed, then put into flower they are drip fed 3 times a day till 10-15% runoff. They do great till about week 5...then the buds stop beefing up, and the hairs start to turn brown. It seems that the plants are over watered. I don't think this is an issue for pure coco growers if they are using the coarse or chunky coco, or at least have it mixed in with regular coco. I have changed my mix by adding 30% hydroton in hopes of fixing this. When I get some extra bucks, I will order some chunky coco to mix in instead cause I hate hydrton balls.

I have shut my dripper down, cause everything in the flower room right now is pure coco, and I will hand water the rest of the way for them. Things are looking good so far. One plant I thought was about done has started to beef up even more since I started letting her dry out abit between waterings.

I will have a more difinitive answer after a week or two...but it seems that fine coco not mixed with amendments like chunky coco or perlite or hydroton et all, is easily overwatered and chocked to the point that they won't finish properly.

I have seen many pure coco grows that have done awesome with 3 or 4 waterings a day. I think it all comes down to the mix of the medium, how your watering schedule should be.

we are talking pure coco here adding more variables to the question in it self is not going to make it easier - i mean instead of trying to find the most suitable way of growing in coco. instead of coco vs coco/perlite and all the different combos of percentages that could turn up etc.

just for simplicity - keep hydroton/perlite etc out o this - this is only a thread about discussion of watering pure coco.

never the less i apreciate ur input on the case.

My first coco run my white widows loved the 4x a day watering but my last grow they looked over watered w/ anything over 2x a day. So i switched to 1x a day and they did much better. I think it could have to do w/ individual strains as well.

humm, I've only watered once daily for years with coco.. lol.. funny that they just mention it now.. years after "their" product has been on the market. I noticed watering less per day the very first year i used Canna coco. It made sence to let them dry out a bit, to allow more air to get in the coco.
Basicly i'm saying that Canna coco is correct in their new findings. Not sure about bigger yields,, but.. who knows.. maybe..

This all makes sense to me. I grow in compost and find that watering to saturation and then letting the compost get nearly dry gives me much better root growth and better yields.
I know that compost is not coco but some of the same principles still apply.

You're missing the point Bone....there are different grades of coco. Just calling everything coco is not accurate or helpful. Buying two different brands of coco bricks on the same shelf in the same store may give you different results, based on the coarsness of the coco of the bricks.

Hence...thats why I mentioned the hydroton and or perlite et all, as ways to make up for the downfalls of the coco dust like products that compile most of the coco coir market.

i now what your saying about different coco but canna's test's will have been done with canna coco and like you say theres alot of different coc's about so maybe just canna coco or the brands of the same texture like to be fed once a day compared to the more course brands?

Exactly. If you use the coarser brands like coco pucks(discs) or Sunleaves coir...you can treat it like hydro and water multiple times without fear of overwatering. The coarser grade coco allows faster drying and more air to the roots.

This thread does not surprise me at all. Not at all. I tried to tell you CoCo fools your overwatering in the cannabis infirmary. "No no velvet, its coco, you can't overwater." Let that nut refuse dry out some, eh? It's like growing in perlite.

arent really to positive atributes to me - as far as i interpret it.

well - if u get ofended go ahead and give me one neg point - thats what the reputacion points are for. it would be fun - itd be the first i ever got - so i dont really think i take it too seriously.

in this forum its remarkably dificult at times to maintain discussion on topic. i guess its because we all smoke,,

anyway - as i see it the rep point system is about giving ppl input about what they state in the post. its in no way anything personal.

as for chilled. i think - its clear im a very chilled person. with the amount i smoke - its dificult not to. its just the fact many different subjects mixed into a discussion makes it very messy to find the relative parts.
