Thanks for showing different seeds, especially the landraces. It seems that the thin layer of mottling, or camoflage wears away as the seeds mature longer on the plant. Anyway, great pictures.

The scientific name for the outer protective covering of a seed is the testa. The seed coat also has a thin inner layer called the tegmen. The seed coat develops from the ovule's integument.

will slough off easily and others are persistent and require scarification for removal prior to germination. Its probably much more obvious on this landrace as morphology points to a nice example of diversity. A crop/weed complex with many types of seed in a large sample of several hundred seeds collected at the source. The next question may be what if the different types are separated will they be similar phenotype's discernible by seed type?
Can one female plant produce many seed type's based on the fathering male plant used ?

This sample shows signs of human cultivation the wild seed coating is mostly absent
It is a feature that thwarts reliable germination when planted as a field domestic crop
