I tried one similar and the biggest issue I found with the cheaper USB cameras has been depth of field. Lighting and exposure are fine, but getting the focus right was such a super shallow depth of field can be problematic:

I've got a lot of things going on now, just got a Steadicam attachment for my phone/camera but when I get a little bit more time, I'm going to revisit macro photography and try to get a little better at it.

Things are a little different these days than they were with my Nikon FTN film camera and a 50 mm 1.4 macro lens.:)

It took a little work to get it dialed in height of scope focus light and the size is minimal and needs to be expanded to the full FOV field of vision. tis particular one is capable of 1900x1200 2MP
For the price and since its simple on Linux and Android, I was very satisfied with the simplicity...

For 100$ will be trying the high quality extension tubes in the future for micro as suggested previously
In the time being will play with this a little more ;)

Awesome thread, lots of great info posted here! I've tried playing around with extension tubes on my 105mm macro lens but failed to capture anything decent. Trying to get better with focus stacking using my Nikon but really haven't figured out a good setup for lighting yet.

The Olympus Tough series mentioned in this thread are great for handheld closeups - I use mine for insects and pests I encounter. Also for checking trichomes on live plants.

Still working on perfecting my glass toolbox :)
Think the top picture had the best focus, getting older thats a challenge.
What I see as clear and in focus is it the same as others with different visual acuity ?
Also is the resolution of course I think I switched to a higer resolution capture there
Photography a fine hobby,
