Buying a car with cash

Here's a question: would it be wise for a grower in a non-legal state to file as a poker player?

My buddy makes six figures playing mostly online. He registers all his winnings honestly with the IRS. He's even been given a mortgage loan from a major bank based solely on poker winnings as income for 4 years.

Two schools of thought running through my head:

A) Dumb idea. You are automatically suspicious and will increase the likelihood of an investigation from multiple agencies in the federal government.

B) Good idea. This way you don't have to play any games. You can buy vehicles and houses and everything in life with cash confidently and honestly.

I would imagine that depends on whether the grower in question has thousands of dollars of poker earnings per month that he could claim. If not, how could this ever be a good idea?

What do you mean?

Hypothetical grower has thousands of dollars via "other" money per month. Or, insofar as the govt can tell, thousands in "poker" winnings per month. The government isn't going to ask for your records from casino's and websites. So it seemed reasonable to consider on it's face at least for a grower who doesn't want to go through the circles of putting property in a friends name and so on.

The government will ask. What I meant was, as many people play anonymously in large games in legitimate establishments, there's not always a name coinciding with a record, even in legitimate games. The government will ask, but they cannot reasonably expect a record of receipt from big cash games.

Right? I don't know how poker winners file. I admitted as much, thats why I asked the question. My friend said that he has never been asked for a receipt. That's the only information I know.

Lies and Whispers

Lies and Whispers

1. Do not lie about what you do...I like to play poker, and bet offshore, but I have a legit business and pay for things with cash, quietly. None of us could withstand government scrutiny but the idea is to live so that you do not attract attention and scrutiny. Remember that Al Capone did a lot of time for tax evasion, and none for murder and bootlegging. Look like Joe Strait, and live like him. A false statement on income tax forms or anything else and you are more fucked than if you dumped that 10k out on the table on ABC.

2. Do not structure transactions of any kind so that you pay more than ten thousand dollars in cash for anything. Why? There is a law against stucturing transactions and it is part of the money laundering law. It is called smurfing, as I recall.

My dad is a bar owner where placing bets on football games is very popular. anything over 5K should never be put in the bank at once. If the person has the car paid off and your just buying it, the money doesn't have to be claimed. He should just pay cash for everything the rest of the year, and not spend any of his recorded income. Fuck taxes and the irs. I just paid $5,000 for a fucking DUI in Illinois, where they force feed that shit to you on every corner in this miserable state....
I'm 24 years old, I work for cash, and I don't care. I don't want to hear about Social Security, 401k, paid vacations. I sure as hell dont want the government getting 150 out of my 600 dollar check every week. Buy your car with cash brother, and when the IRS comes to your door tell them its hard to get water out of a dry turnip, dont claim anything you make, then how can they come after you? We pay these cock suckers with tax money, to come bother us as to where OUR money came from? I know someone that works at an Illinois state prison, She worked xmas day and made over $45 an hour, and also got 5, yes 5! paid bonus days off for working that day. Now correct me if I'm wrong but that 1 worker just cost our state over $1,000 in ONE DAY! And these people are in unions and can strike if they dont get what they want... I hate what our country has become. I remember growing up looking at president, police, teachers, and looking up to them . Now I think they are a bunch of jester pussies with to many rights. God Bless America

9800.00 flags call to IRS from dealership. It the law. Put 9k down finance 1k pay off in 60 days. Doesn't raise flags. Or Spend 500 to get your auction/reseller license and cut out middleman.

Never in doubt, often wrong. That bumper sticker could be applied to some of the advice and assertions provided in this thread.

Or buy a 25k car, pay 9k down, then make quadruple monthly payments with the rest. Soon you have a nice paid for car, and you can trade it in with another 9k to get a nicer car. Or just buy and sell under tje 10k limit, pay in cash and sell for checks.

When you sell for checks (cashiers checks preferred) you don't have to worry about depositing it in the ATM. It's basically an inconvenient way to swap cash for checks, using a vehicle sale as the cover. This holds true for any high-dollar merchandise, antiques, guitars, high-end hifi gear, motorcycles, boats, guns or anything you can buy and sell on Craigslist.

oh, and you can go to walmart and buy a Paypal Moneypak card for $5 and put $1100 on it, buy a bunch and then the money is in your paypal account, so you can write checks with it.

Scratch that, Moneypak started requiring SSN's on all deposits over $250 starting Jan 1 2011. Well, fuck.

guys i know this would be on record but the money is already in my account. i just dont want to be considered suspicious for the transaction

Keep in mind that property you own can be seized without a conviction of a crime, and if there is a loan or lien on it they rarely if ever try to seize it. Finance a chunk of the car and make the small monthly payments, it will help protect your stuff from cops.

Put it in your grandmas name if and when the shit hits the fan they cant seize it.. 9k is the max u wana put down at any one time at a dealership...

If buying privately and price is greater then 10k ask if you he can write bill of sale for 9k and you throw him extra 500... works everytime

Really, so if I wanted to be a smart ass and slow things down a bit, I could just say "that was a gift" or "Oh funny story, I found that" for like everything.

Actually no, you gotta prove you bought it with legit funds. Property doesnt get the benefit of the doubt, proprty is guilty until proven innocent basically

I spoke to my attorney today...

He said that game is nearly impossible to win, too. That's why he said the goal is to knock it down to possession, even if it's serious possession. Anything "intent to distribute" or higher and all your shit is potentially gone. He said he's seen them take everything, even shit that was legitimately paid for but did not have a sufficient paper trail.

The more I talk to this lawyer the more I see how much harder this lifestyle is over the course of a lifetime in this day and age. The game was much easier even 10 years ago.

And please don't put stuff in your grannies name as suggested earlier. Yes, they can and will take it, and yes, they can and will charge her with any sniff of evidence that she knew how you earned the money. Avoid at all costs.
