The residue was clear with some chemical odor before vacuuming down the test bag. Unless you get this cheap and intend on distilling it in a CLS it's probably best avoided.

The residue had a yellow tint with a fairly strong odor of bio mass that persists even after a couple of vacuum downs of the test bag.

I don't remember the original lot I tested having such a strong odor.

The residue had a light yellow tint with a repulsive peaty shitty odor that persisted after twice vacuuming down the test bag.


I've found DME to be a superb solvent, it's a shame this unrefined crap coming out of Korea is all that's available.

If a solvent supplier like Sean at Ecogreen, or Adam at BVV is able to obtain sample USA sourced bulk tanks, I'd love to test it.

The residue was clear with no odor

Zippo also manufactures Ronson, they're basically the same product with different labels.

If you compare over time the Zippo and Ronson results you see they go up and down while remaining in the upper level of purity.


"Can assembled in USA of domestic and foreign parts. Butane from USA." Also check out the authoritative and meaningful quantity spec, it's by weight, not volume "5.82 oz. (165g)" - notice the correct appearing abbreviations for ounce and gram, and the simple and easy to understand date code, USA high standards!!

Best Value Vacs' USA n-butane had 0.000g of residue

Best Value Vacs' n-butane, USA, 165g sample from a 20lb/10.9kg tank, no DOM

The residue had a cloudy white tint with no odor.


After shaking and swishing the tank, and then waiting a couple of minutes, I shot about 200ml into a frozen beer mug to ensure the valve was clear of debris, noticing a few minute specs of black stuff, I squirted another 200ml to another mug, seeing nothing, I proceeded to take the actual test sample with a Mason jar, placing it on a scale to obtain a nearly exact 165g (300ml) sample.

Boiled off cleanly, no lingering semi-volatiles at the end.


My thanks to Nick at BVV, how about a tank of imported for comparison?

It seems my guys sent you one of my r/d supply tanks. I guess they misunderstood when I told them to send a tank for testing. I am going to send you another tank, one that is from our for sale supply. I will speak with the owner about USA propane as well.

In regards to the packing, I’m pretty embarrassed my guys didn’t’ pack that as specified in my guidelines. I don’t understand how a box marked OVERPACK had no packing. Luckily, the mistake wasn’t detrimental. I apologize for that, and hope this doesn’t reflect poorly on our normal procedure. I’m ordering an increase on q/c as too many of our warehouse guys are pretty green at this point.

DME/dimethyl ether is a superb solvent, and the odor is as ethereal as it gets.

I'm willing to work with the importers to get clean product.

My first tests were weighed with an inexpensive .01 gradient scale.

My later results to the .001 digit were weighed with an inexpensive .001 gradient scale.

The results from jackgastche were weighed with a .001 gradient scale, but rounded off to the .01 digit.

How to do the test,

Cheapest generic supermarket one gallon ziplock bag, cut the ziplock off, fold up, place on .01 or .001 scale, record tare weight, fold over the top one inch to the outside, place in a pyrex dish, place the pyrex dish in another dish, squirt a full can of ~300ml butane lighter refill into a quart Mason jar as per the video, pour the liquid butane into the plastic bag, add warm water to the larger dish, after boil off vacuum purge the bag, fold the bag, place on scale, record weight, deduct tare weight from final weight, post result to ICMAG's "Butane Residue Test Results" thread. TIA!!!

Freeze the can of butane and the Mason jar by placing in the freezer for a couple of hours before the test to maximize the amount of liquid butane collected.

Freeze both the can of butane and a quart wide mouth canning jar (a large peanut butter jar will suffice.) Poke several small holes in the lid with one in the center for the butane can tip. Go outdoors, isolate yourself from any source of ignition, be aware of static electricity discharges. Don't seal up the jar, and don't bring it inside.


The rest of the video was about dumping an oz of ground herb in the can's worth of butane, swishing, placing a couple of coffee filters over the top of the canning jar while sealing them in place with the ring, then pouring/filtering out into a Pyrex dish for evaporation. All outdoors of course.
