Butane Residue Test Results

I'll be posting up a stream of retest results over the next few weeks, two points:

If you have sincere doubts as to a result, or just think a popular brand deserves more than a single can/single lot retest, say so.

The Best to Worst list linked to in my ICMAG Forums Signature is updated at every test, any reordering is in relation to the last test result.


So far in my experience with non-volatile residue testing not a single canned refill brand who's quality has slipped has ever come back.

Griffin Sunflame next.

The residue had a light yellow tint with little odor.

The residue was clear with very little odor.


I don't know why I wasn't sent product of recent manufacture. I went back and checked my notes, and found the amount of residue varied within the lot I had back then, and this one with less residue was from a lot filled only a week later.

Lotus had.007g of residue

The residue was clear with very little odor.


This is from a recently obtained a factory sealed six pack, yet the date code is close to the same as that from the previous test. Nearly as clean as the first lot, and my personal overall top choice.

Examining Lucienne for impurity next.

if its being distilled is there a reason to go with Refined Hydrocarbon Solutions over an r600 like Ecogreen? RHS is almost double the cost of Ecogreen.

But I reiterate, open extracting with refrigerant grade gases, R-600/R-290 without first testing the purity for yourself is at best sleazy. Don't trust retailers such as Ecogreen as to purity, squirting a cups worth into a clear plastic bag, letting it boil off, and examining the result for stinking off color yuck provides more pertinent info than you can get from a Certificate of Analysis, or a lab test that doesn't provide concise non-volatile residue data.

Okay cool I'm going to be making the switch from open to closed just trying to understand it a bit better so thanks for clarifying. I would prefer to distill it anyway so I'll go with the cheaper solution

Walgreens raised the price from $6 to $8.

Super 9X, and 11X, Glow, King, Zippo, Blink, MZ12X, and Sodoex were ordered for testing.

Clipper 7X, and 12X today, and then Xikar Purofine, Neon, and Sun followed by the above as they come in.


Unless you guys have some suggestions that should do it for this round.

The residue had a light yellow tint, and stank. Even the vapors from the boil off stank. I suggest not even trying to distill this in a CLS.

The residue was clear with little odor.


Decent butane for cheap.
