Butane honey oil for dummies

G

GOOROO

Thanks for the explanation moldy dreads. I never realized that I was " whipping my oil"

anyways I have since realized so I added just enough Iso to dissolve it and then evaporated that and let it sit over night on a hot pad. Well Now I have this oil that is liquid at room temp and amber as all get out. Thanks again

Newb here. I have lots of frozen trim and popcorn buds, how do i shrink all that stuff into something workable? Throw it in the coffee grinder? I want to try and make some BHO but I cant figure out how to scale down all this trim into a manageable amount of material.

What's everyone's opinion on this? I'm not that new to making bho, but I still can't help thinking I'm not being as efficient as i can with my butane to material ratio.
Generally I just break it down as much as possible by hand and gently pack it down.
I've done my last couple of runs in a jar so it sits in the butane for a bit, but I've come round to the conclusion the tube is still the way to go. I'd love to get some glass tubes like the dude mentioned in the post earlier, they sound dope.
All said an done, one can of butane is quite small compared to the amount of material you end up with so it's definitely a quandry.
Opinions?

ps. don't use the coffee grinder dude, you'll loose heaps of trics.

Here is my redissolved "UN whipped oil"

looks like your typical stuff
liquidy at room temp.
I really prefer this over the buttered up stuff, especially when smoking on a skillet, but everyone I know smoking it on bowls likes the buttered stuff more because its easier to handle

Here are some shots from the latest run. Thanks again to everyone for all the help and support. I have been able to make rock hard oil in just under 2 hours start to finish now. This stuff is awesome !!

Hi Gregory Hines!

Congratulations on your Amber  certification passed!

Q: is it absolute ? (joke)

why is my oil not as translucent?

it appears to me that that would be the finest of the finest but that means your leaving tons in there

Thanks Jump !

It all shattered like glass. No flame ups when lit, and just melts to oil when heated. It's too bad we cant all get together for a session !

Your stuff (frirst pic) looks like it has a lot of moisture/trapped butane in there. If you let it pool up too much when extracting it can get like that or if some water or moisture from the extraction dish got in there. Even moist bud or trim can put excess in there and it seems to come out waxy and not clear/amber. Try and put some with that dish on a coffee warmer and see if it bubbles up big time or just melts.

I think sometimes the butane gets trapped as a liquid in parts and makes it waxy.

I hope others chime in on this as I am no expert, just what I have learned from observations, as well as trial and error .

that would make some sense. on that run I did have an issue with moisture. All that oil has been smoked so I can't test that.
GOt more cans of tane just need to get more trim or somethin.

Activated Carbon - is linky, click the underlined words "activated carbon" and you'll jump to description posted by Grassman.

I use it in a little different manner:

-dissolve an extract in ethanol,
-add crumbled activated carbon (from pharmacy) into solution,
-mix and stir in few minutes,
-filter and evaporate.

The resulting product is less in amount but has a better color and consistence.
Activated carbon removes green color and improves dense of the extract.
It also takes away some good resin as a payment for cleaning.

The atmospheric moisture content makes a big difference in how much water you pick up in an open evaporation dish. I use a stainless cup instead of a evaporation dish during the wet months. I keep it sitting in hot water during the extraction, and the butane boiling off keeps the moisture out of the mix.

If you heat it up after evaporation and use a spatula, you can collect most of it and the use of an ethanol wash afterwards will collect the rest of it.

I just made my last batch while it was raining outside, under cover. I am sure the moisture content in the atmosphere was high, yet did not get any in my dish that caused my oil to be wax or have trapped gas/moisture. I like the idea of the hotel pan, the stainless will heat differently than the glass will, but will also scratch or get scrapped during uses, unlike glass.

I too keep it in the hot water while extracting, but the key is how hot. I also have found the amount you extract at one time is key to how the end product comes out depending on purging methods.

And Jump, activated carbon also removes taste. One of its purposes in filtration uses is remove off flavours. I would thinks that might help or hurt that oil ? If it tasted horrible before and now tastes clean, great !!! But if it tasted like the strain and now like nothing..... What has happended when you did that ?

Hi Gregory Hines,

I apply this method when I'm disappointed with consistence of extract ("oil") and its quality at all,
I think you're right, activated carbon has to remove off flavours and he removes,
and more, activated carbon I used brings a side smell, not pleasant, nor horrible,

yes, in contrast to ethanol, activated carbon acts negative on flavour.

hello. been lurking icmag for a while. i come from GC. but i have a question on how much butane i should use. this is my new glass extractor and it holds around a quarter, a little more i think. im gonna use the 320 mL cans of vector, how many cans do you think i would need for 2 runs? im gonna do a whole nug run, then a ground up run. thanks
