Buds getting moldy in the jar!

Hi folks.

So I live in a very humid part of the world. Leave anything in the dark for a while and you'll find mouldy mildewy stuff on it within a few days. So i knew curing buds might be a bit tricky. So I dried the buds out for much longer than needed, burped the jar for longer than usual, and then this morning, after 2 weeks cure, I inspect the jar to find a very tiny bit of mould growing on the buds! My Christmas and new year stash that has been very hard to get this far!!

It's not too severe yet, but I guess if i'd left it another 24 hours it would be all over them.

I've put the jar in the fridge for now to try and stop the mold growing. Is there anything else I can do to stop it spreading??? Is fridge cold enough or will i need to freeze??

Any tips appeciated.

You will have to toss the area that is affected; so I hope you removed the infected part out of there, you will have to start drying your buds in a controlled environment with a de humidifier. there is nothing out there to stop it from spreading except control your RH (humidity) bud mold is the exception where there is nothing to spray on them or cure them except to toss them..... the humidity is the major cause for this..... so when you open up your jar you need to do so in a much less humid environment; when you opened that jar you allowed moisture to get in there and stay in there.... that's all it takes.

So you will need an area like a bathroom without a shower or tub and have a dehumidifier in there and have your stash in there and when you open the stash make sure your humdity is lower than 50%

That is about the only way you can really do this... to stop the rest of your stash from spreading.....

Man that sucks, someone needs to make a super-strain, I know on one of the outdoor grow threads that one strain in particular..never got any mold, and a lot of people grew it and reported it.

put them in the fridge has the OPPOSITE result. If you lower the temps, the RH will raise.

Try using drying salts if you don't have $$$ to buy a dehum.

Better is to use a piece of marine salt, like ONE piece of 10-20 grams. They are common in humid country because it's used for meat, fish, .... Put it close to the buds. It will lower the RH and kill mold spores.

I thought mold stopped spreading if it was cold enough?

Thanks for the advice peeps. It's a crappy thing when your RH is 90% +.

For a single jar of bud it's a little much to get a dehumidifier - though i totally realise that if i were to grow here again then I'd need this. I've opted for some dessicant in the jar to soak up moisture and a cleanup as best I can.

But damn, I miss the dry dry air of the UK right now.

Don't start, but if it's alredy there the increase of humidity will help it more than the reduction of temps...

A freezer would be the right place. But below zero. Not zero, below. But this will hurt your buds.

nope, it only causes it to halt not completely kill it, temps would have to be colder than a fridge to kill it off, meaning the default setting of a fridge is not strong enough; you would have to crank up the cold setting to really kill it off.

Like frost damage cold.... but you don't want that.
Well, I figured you were going to keep growing which is why I rec. a de-humidifier :)
If I would have known you were not going to, than I would have never said it; I agree it's a lot of $ for a single jar of buds!

I put a small pot of dessicant (wardrobe dehumidifying granules) in a small pot inside a more spacious container and notice that 24 hours later the top few granules have absorbed some moisture. The mould hasn't spread any more yet.

I'll post again if this proves to halt it completely.

You can fill coffee filters with about a 1/2 cup of baking soda each. Then use twisty ties to tie the paper coffee filters closed so the baking soda doesn't pour / leak out.

Then keep one of these in each of your jars. This will prevent mold and cure faster. Just make sure you take the coffee filters out after a week or so.

Remember that when you are finished drying your buds and put them in jars, to open the jars for 12 hours per day for a couple of days of curing. Keep sealed for 12 hours and open for 12 hours per day. I call this pre-curing or wicking. You keep repeating this until the bud no longer feels moist after being sealed up for 12 hours.

I have a curing method on ***** - Drying and Curing section if you are interested in more details of this method.

burping...lol

silica packs will stop it cold.

get jar. place packs in bottom. place pt over so bud does not touch pack.

my fav is rice. same as in salt shaker. works and NO as to deal w/but dry rice.

The baking soda in jars works in the same way baking soda helps in your fridge or freezer at preventing mold and helps control moisture.

So, the dehumidifying granules did an amazing job at drying out the buds completely in just 24 hours and stopping the mould in it's tracks. Now the nugs are properly dried it's a much stronger and tastier smoke that makes my whole place smell like a sweet Amsterdam coffeeshop.

Christmas is saved!

I don't recommend anyone use the dehumidifying granules that are even slightly perfumed though - the smell really clings to the buds. The baking soda tip or the salt as a dessicant would probably be best.

Well, it's been an education.

Thanks y'all
