A'dam has become one big liability for tokers. Being known as the main cannabis tourist destination, going there raises a red flag with the wrong people.
It's time has come and gone. With private gardening and more nations relaxing laws, it's become less attractive. With the new travel tracking systems and security measures, it has no place in my future travel plans.

I think the entire issue will continue to evolve in a 2 steps forward and one step back sort of way. Determination and patience will ultimately win out.
That article was over a week ago, but foreigners can still buy the weed in the shops and in the mean while the EU is starting to collapse.

News:
The University of Tilburg advices the council of Maastricht to close ALL coffeeshops, as it would decrease problems created by cannabis, and decrease the amount of drugtourists, runners and dealers all together in the area.
Most probably they will move to cities surrounding Maastricht so instead of solving the problems the would be shifted.

The council of Maastricht already reacted to the advice of the university, stating that it is against the idea of closing all coffeeshops and against the idea of introducing a weedpass. (most probably they have figured out that drugtourists do not only spend there money on drugs, but also on parking, shopping and food)
Instead they will uphold their original idea, from a couple of years ago, to spread the coffeeshops around the area of Maastricht instead of them being mostly concentrated around the centre. (this could prolly mean that they create a convoy of tourists driving from shop to shop)
And last week the province of Brabant organised another clean up day.
They have cleaned up 14 different grows. They have confiscated up to 100 kilos of Herb and over 5000 plants, as well as 5 cars and a house.

Funny news. It has become apparent that the police department sell lights that they have confiscated at grows, through the official auction department back to new growers!

it's almost like in the US: they confiscate cars, equipment and weapons from the mafia then use them against the growers (who mostly work for the mafia in Mexico, but not necessarily in the US.)
and they also sell their weed, after burning a big pile of it in front of the media... but i guess its something like this everywhere. corruption is mostly an easy way to make money.

I don't think the ban will last too long. Canna-tourists contribute a huge amount of money to the economy over there. The money they spend on hotels, restaurants, gift shops, vehicle rentals, tours, etc. will be sorely missed if they ban tourists from the smokehouses. I give it three years, tops.

According to research made by the council of Amsterdam has concluded that a majority of the Coffeeshop visitors will either grow their own or start buying from other growers or street/house dealers.
30% of visitors stated that they would register for a weed pass, if it is introduced in Amsterdam.
25% would grow their own or go to growers, and another 25% will go to streetdealers or teahouses etc... etc..
They questioned 1200+ coffeeshops visitors and 66 coffeeshop managers.
Another thing according to the research the inhabitants of amsterdam have a fairly neutral view towards coffeeshops in their neighbourhoods.

Those are the conclusions of the Garettsen Committee advising the Dutch Cabinet. They conclude that marijuana with a higher percentage of THC is more dangerous for health and safety. Therefore all Cannabis products containing over 15% THC should be treated as Harddrugs, like cocaine and heroine.

The big news today is that the new Tolerance Policy will become active from July 1, 2011, and will be valid until June 30 2015(!). The AHOJG criteria are already avaiable onwww.openbaarministerie.nl The good news is not much is going to change.
The most important conclusion is that the AHOJG crtieria have not been complemented with the Weedpass and the Distance Criteria. Nothing changes in this area.
The announced additions will not be part of the national regulations for coffeeshops.
This means that all the evil measurements from The Hague, including weedpass and distance criteria, can only be implemented on a local level. This means the weedpass and the distance criteria will probably not make it in Amsterdam. These announced measurements, that would lead to a coffeeshop wipe-out in Amsterdam, can only be implemented through local legislation by the City Council.
The City Council already spoke out against the weedpass and the distance criteria, like the Mayor, who will be held to execute and maintain the new Tolerance rulebook. This is also included in the Opiumlaw art. 31b.
Especially the long term of the new Tolerance regulations stands out, 4 years going! This is a first, and appears to be a signal that The Hague decided that de introduction of the weedpass and the new distance criteria and everything else Justice Minister Opstelten comes up with is to be decided on by individual City Councils. The City Council has toe execute or deny new measurements. The Mayor has to uphold the rules in the end.
This means in Amsterdam there will be no mayor changes.
The 5 plant rule stays intact.
