I was the only one who fished... and the trout were HUGE and easy as hell to catch.. the smallest was 20 inches!!! they were raised in this pond... never saw a fisherman, fed cat food 3 days a week.. HUGE FISH! all rainbows... man that was one hellova fish fry... I miss that trip, even now.. its been like.. 10- 13 years

Yeah, I never understood why some kids liked to wear their uniforms to school. In elementary school, I guess.....some little kid in his cub scouts uniform. That ain't so bad. But I mean seriously now, High School?? Some of my friends would wear their uniforms to High School. Now that is just silly....

How many of ya'll made it to the Order of the Arrow? I myself was in the Brotherhood. Even got to help perform in some of the ceremonies (even though my troop was not in charge of that).

It felt awesome to be picked. Even though they (like EVERYONE ELSE) mispronounced my last name. In fact, everyone in my troop that got in that year had their last name butchered.

Whats up Tark, I'm a fellow scout myself. Life, Jasm and order of the arrow. I'm greatful for all I learned. Might have made eagle but was running up against the age barrier, before I quit. Nice to see some scouts here.

Poor Buffalo, that had to hurt.
I felt sorry for all the troops that were so strict. A couple of my friends in other troops said they had to wear everything to every meeting. Socks, pants, badge sashes, hats, everything. My troop was doing good if everyone wore their shirts. My troop was extremely relaxed, the adults never really pushed us to do anything. But when we showed up to Camporees, for some reason we looked like one of the best troops. It is not as if everyone was looking all clean and proper, squared away with clean fingernails, we just did good in everything. We always came in first and second in the cooking competitions, and we kicked ass in every competitive event we entered. We always got banners and ribbons at camporees and came out looking like we knew what we were doing.
Anyone remember Scout Fairs?? Those were wild. We had to do ours at the Astro Arena, or whatever the big ass convention center for the Astrodome was called (now it is Reliant Arena). The largest Scout Fairs were held there, I believe. Jesus Christ, talk about a lot of people.......fun though. Almost 350 acres of scout booths....and one of the world's largest parking lots, 26,000 spots.

I was a boy scout. I never made it to eagle. I was a life which was one step down. I was also a senior patrol leader. I had a great scout master. its funny because we were the most ragtag troop ever. When wed go to camp or other scouting events all the other scouts troops would be mostly white with matching uniforms. Most of us had the old green uniforms and a few of us had the new (at the time) brown uniforms. Our scout master encouraged getting old uniforms from thrift stores since they were cotton and more comfortable not to mention our troop was 90% poor southern kids. 75% of us were african american the rest was about half indian and half white. In fact it was the one organized group I'd participated in where the poor kids had the upper hand since we knew how to take care of ourselves, and loved starting fires, playing with knives and tying knots. Our scout master wasn't christian so homosexuality or christianity never came up. It's kind of funny because it's really sad because I believe nowadays its more of a preparation for dealing with the beauracracy of the military now and less a way of teching you how to take care of yourself and developing an appreciation for nature how I remember it.

The bsa is a private organization I believe their current homophobic attitude is an uneducated response to several pedophilia allegations. I remember my uncle telling me about how his scout master used to call "tick check" as an excuse to get young boys naked. We always kind of laughed about it but that kind of stuff did have a strong effect on their numbers. Though open homosexuality isn't a sign of even homosexual pedophilia after these allegations allowing homosexual scoutmasters would probably cause a serious drop in enrollment and since they are a private christian affiliated organization they have the right to do so. I'm not sure about female scoutmasters though. Firstly I think that bsa was a good way for children who were overmothered, had absent fathers or fathers who worked long hours to have a positive male influence. Female scoutmasters tended to mother the children and the few I'd met were really scary people.

It would've been funny if some scout master tried to molest us, a group of poor kids with knives who could tie knots and start fires and were all hyped up on bug juice. I don't think he would've gotten very far without getting tied up and stabbed and then burned at the stake.
