Pink, games and dvd's don't exactly work the same way darling. If your a darling, haha. If not my sincere apologies.

Games will always be coded for the format of the system, ie. ps3 or 360. HD will burn in a year or two tops. If it isn't already, and hopefully Micro$soft goes down with it too!

yes games are formated to suite the platform (X Box Playstation etc)
but they all use certain formats to write the data to disk red, blue, orange book format etc

having burned a couple of thousand disks a year I know how they are laid out

It doesn't really matter which wins, they're both just an excuse to sell more crap. Aside from slightly better picture quality, there's really no advantage in this "new" media. It takes the same amount of physical space as a DVD and is just as prone to scratching.

IMO, the best media is a big ass hard drive. No fast forward, selecting chapters, or changing discs, just point and click. Considering how easy it is to download high quality movies, it's a wonder people still buy that crap. But I guess that's coming from my cheap ass. I just ordered a 1TB hard drive. Now that, my friends, will hold a LOT of por...uh, movies.

TEIN is right, just another excuse to sell more crap. This technology is already dying. Netflix announced the other day a set top box where you can download movies straight to your tv. Online is where you're going to get all of your media in the future.

HD dvd can be burned to single layer, dual layer and double sided dual layer disks
it depends on the amount of data being burned anything from 4.5 - 18gb depending on the disks
I have HD movies on single layer disks and some on dual layer

Paramount and Universal are still going with HD-DVD. Unlikely Blockbuster is going to stop carrying their movies either.

welp, until any of them really get in gear and hit the main-stream consumer market, neither will win. Netflix is carring about 450 blue-ray titles, and nearly 400 HD DVD titles. I honestly dont care as I have about 485x485 resolution on my TV. HD-DVD + Blu-ray players will be an option as NEC has created a multi-format decoder already. I think blue-ray is winning because there was more market for them in the start (PS3's) and the xbox 360 got a HD DVD player add-on upgradge added to it's aresenal. So it's anyone's bet, Nickelodeon, MTV, Dreamworks, Universal Studios and some others (HD-DVD) vs.Apple, Dell, Panasonic, Hitachi, LG, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Sony and others (blu-ray)(totally wiki'd that). Warner bros. just dropped out of the HD DVD scene and so did New Line Cinema. Apparently some other companies are making new formats also, trying to steal the title from both blu-ray and HD-DVD. I think blu-ray will win, and ironic as it seems, New Line Cinema's 1st, only, and last HD DVD release is Pan's Labyrinth. Paramount and Universal are going HD DVD, but Paramount also states they reserve the right to make the switch back to blu-ray, creating some doubt that HD DVD will win. Paramount and Universal are huge in the movie industry, but they have tons of smaller companies to compete against. But...blu-ray wins: Dell and Apple like em, hardware manufacturers like em, Paramount is having doubts about its HD-DVD format choice, more titles for blu-ray. Warner Bros announced hybrid disks, that have blu-ray and HD DVD content on opposite sides, but dont wanna do it now and support blu-ray.

If you have a 1080p capable TV you will not get a 1080p signal from anything other than BlueRay. My digital cable provider claims that there is little chance that anyone will brodcast in anything higher than 1080i in the near future. The whole idea behind the 1080p was for BlueRay.

Guys, with Warner going with Blu-Ray, it MEANS Blu-ray won, plain and simple. They have 70% of the market and it looks like Paramount is going to ditch HDDVD, raising it even higher. If you are interested in this stuff, i say get a PS3. I don't know about the laser failing, but if it does in 2 years, a blu-ray player will be available for less that $100 by then.

For all of you discussing downloads over next gen discs: right now, no download service or HD-VOD has even close to the same bit-rate as a blu-ray disc. So if you have a big screen home theater, the difference will be clear. The best quality HD content is on optical disc, and the best disc to go with now is Blu-Ray. And considering the high cost of stand-alone players, you may as well get the PS3 and have a totally internet upgradable blu-ray player along with the most advanced gaming system yet created. Then you can play Rock Band, the best game ever...

Erm... medgrowr02... Blue-ray players are all obsolete already, besides the PS3.

"early supporters of the format will be left out in the cold when the Blu-ray Disc Association introduces BD Profile 2.0"

So yeah, sorry for all those that bought blu-ray early on, thats what you get for being an early adopter. Could be worse, you could have bought an HD DVD.
And Sony gives us yet one more reason to hate them :biglaugh:

I laugh at people who buy Sony products. Poor fools will have garbage in less than 5 years. Remember Mini Disc? What about Betamax? Laserdisc? Digital Audio Tape? Their wonderful DRM software that came packaged with all that music? Anyone remember that and the clusterfuck it caused people?

M'eh to the format war. Microsoft and Apple are banking on downloadable HD content for distribution of music/movies/TV shows/etc. That is where the future is going to go.

Got Bud, And there aren't millions of reasons to hate Microsoft? Look, it's all about filling a need you have, if it works, great. If you are a videophile with a big home theater, it's worth the "risk" of blu-ray obsolescence to have the best possible video quality. I have had a CD player and a DVD player from sony both shit the bed hard, i know they don't have reliable products. But if you have a need...i used Minidiscs to record live shows and rehearsals for YEARS when there was no other way to make a decent digital audio recording with an inexpensive portable device. Of course there are much better options now, but i needed it then, and it fit my need at the time perfectly.

As long as you don't mind spending the money, you do get something great in return. Even if it breaks 2 years later. There is nothing comparable to the PS3, IMO.

Dr. G, only HDMI is capable of outputting 1080p, so it is unlikely that your Xbox 360 has the ability to do so. Most likely, if you have a 1080p HDTV, what is happening is your TV "upscaling" the 1080i signal output by your Xbox by guessing what the pixels should be.

GOT_BUD?, the maximum capacity for a HDDVD disk is currently 30Gb for two layers, and for Bluray it is 50Gb. I don't doubt the marketability of online downloadable content, but it will never replace HD media. Something between the lines of limited hard drive space and the internet not being fast enough will be the barrier for that in the foreseeable future.

BD Profile 2.0 will likely only affect online content accessible by Bluray discs. This shouldn't even matter to early adopters who wouldn't have been able to access this content anyways.
