Time Warner just said it will be releasing all movies in blue ray format and NOT on HD format, what does this mean for owners of HD drives who do not have a blue ray disc??? does it mean you will have to own both blue ray and HD players to view the majority of movies, or will htere be a universal format agreed upon so we dont have to own two different disc players??? i own an xbox and i was going to buy the external HD player but at this point im confused and dont know which way to go? any advice? comments? information??? i think a thread for this topic was needed... so what do you guys got to say? :lurk:

I acctually think both will have a place in future
I thought that it would go HD for movies and blueray for games and PC's etc
most likey there will be players brought out that can play both formats for all media's eventuallyikely there will be play

My opinion, and I write regularly on tech, sell those HD DVD's on e-bay as soon as humanly possible. Get the cash and buy a Blu-Ray DVD player, no don't buy a PS3 to play movies either. After 1000 movies, which seems like a lot, but after a year or two you'd be surprised, your laser will shit the bed. Causing you much agony and a fat headache trying to get it replaced of repaired. Go buy an actual Blu-Ray player, obviously the shit is expensive, (600-ebay/1g in the store). I have heard this, Toshiba is coming out with a dual band player, like a HDDVD/Blu-Ray player in one, but I wouldn't count on it lasting dude. With most all studios releasing Blu-Ray and currently none messing with HDDVD, I think it's obvious. Just my 2 cents though brotha.

DO NOT buy that external HD player, I made that mistake, bought one for my 360 Elite and it was foolish. I now am selling it alone, not with this gorgeous elite, and then will save for a blu-ray dvd player. Another thing, if your not on a 1080i hi-def tv, wait a while and get one of those first. It doesn't make much sense spending green backs for something you can't use to it's full potential.

Good luck dude!

It means Sony will have the monopoly on all media and embed there stupid shit in everything!!

Pink, games and dvd's don't exactly work the same way darling. If your a darling, haha. If not my sincere apologies.

Games will always be coded for the format of the system, ie. ps3 or 360. HD will burn in a year or two tops. If it isn't already, and hopefully Micro$soft goes down with it too!

lol good question dinosaurus. but who still buys pornos? that's what the internet is for

anyway to answer your question about what does it mean to people that have hd dvd players - i think anybody with an hd-dvd player is either very rich or just stupid. cuz if they're rich it doesn't really matter they can just go out and buy a new blueray player. but if they're not rich then they're stupid cuz they should have just waited til a player came out that plays both hd dvds and blueray discs, you know it's only a matter of time.

Until a manufacturer can come out with a High Definition player capable of competing with a $25 dollar standard DVD player, and media that costs less than $15 when new, neither of them is going to knock standard def dvd's off it's throne atop the mountain.

And eatcannabisraw - I sincerely doubt that if you were to view HDDVD content next to BluRay content on properly calibrated sets, that you would be able to tell a difference. I'm not doubting your experiences with it, I'm just saying that 99.999999% of the world is unable to tell the difference between the two when they are on equal footing.

They both are being used by the porn industry. Sony isnt stupid enough to make the same mistake twice. The first time they said no porn on their exclusive format is what sank Betamax over VHS. Even when Betamax was the better more compact media version.

It had been reported by various sources (PC World, Ars Technica, CNN, et al) that pornography had been disallowed on Blu-ray Disc, which may have had an effect on the success of the format.[84] However, this is inaccurate, as both formats have said they fully support all material, including porn, and have no control over what companies release with their license.[85] Blu-ray is currently exclusively backed by several adult-movie studios/publishers,[86] including Taisei Co. Ltd. and Total Media Agency Inc. Contrary to many internet blogs, it has been reported by ABC News that the porn industry will not be a factor in the current format war.[87] The main reason is that many pornographic websites have movie downloads as an option, thus making the disc format less important.

Sony says no to porn on Blu-ray DiscSony said it won't help the adult film industry use Blu-ray Disc, giving the rival HD-DVD format a helping hand.

(IDG News Service) -- Sony Corp. said it will not work with the adult film industry to help put its movies on its Blu-ray Disc format, although the company will not try to stop it completely. The company will not allow its disc-replicating subsidiary, Sony DADC Global, to handle adult film titles, it said this week. In markets where Sony operates around the world, it won't duplicate any movies that are above a certain rating or that have not been certified by a local motion picture association.Sony wouldn't disclose exactly where it draws the line, but the rule means that adult movie makers will have to find someone else to reproduce their films in bulk. While other companies offer such services, the adult industry feels it is being cut out of the Blu-ray camp altogether. The choice of which high-definition disc format to use was "kind of made for us, so everything we are replicating right now is in the HD-DVD format," said Robby D, a director at popular adult film maker Digital Playground Inc. "As far as I understand, Sony has said to the replicators that if you replicate adult, you'll lose your license."Sony's decision to stay away from pornography could have wide implications for Blu-ray Disc. Not only could some companies backing Sony's format miss out on a lucrative market, but analysts say it could eventually mean that Blu-ray loses out to HD-DVD in the battle to become the next-generation DVD format. Many believe that Sony's Betamax video tape format, while technologically superior to VHS, died because the adult movie industry was barred from using Betamax, noted Jake Richter, an analyst at Jon Peddie Research in Tiburon, Calif. "Is Sony doomed to repeat one of the mistakes of the past? It seems like that may be the case," he wrote in a report.Several adult film companies said the issue is not just about gaining access to the "stampers" that reproduce their movies in bulk, but about their inability to get help with technical issues from the companies backing Blu-ray Disc."Nobody comes out and says, 'No, we won't work with adult.' But Blu-ray just offers no help," said Jackie Ramos, vice president of DVD production at Wicked Pictures, another popular adult movie company. The Blu-ray Disc Association, which oversees the licensing of the technology, says it has not banned anyone from using the format. "We look forward to working with any content providers interested in providing their audience with the best possible high definition home entertainment experience," the group said in a statement. One major adult film company, Vivid Video, plans to release a sequel to the classic Debbie Does Dallas on both Blu-ray Disc and HD-DVD this spring, its first high-definition video offering. A spokesman for the company, Shylar Cobi, declined to comment on how Vivid would gain access to stampers but said he does not expect it to be a problem.Still, several other adult film companies interviewed said the industry as a whole plans to use HD-DVD because of the problems of working with Blu-ray Disc. Wicked Pictures chose HD-DVD for the first-ever high-definition adult film released this month at the AVN Adult Entertainment Expo in Las Vegas. Several other companies plan to release high-definition movies this year, including Digital Playground, which is releasing its first HD-DVD title this week."Sony is really protective of proprietary information and proprietary products, especially when it comes to the adult market. Sony is always a little more standoffish and hands-away from it," said Jay Grdina, president of adult entertainment company ClubJenna Inc.

Japan's Adult Industry Given Access to Blu-ray
Posted July 30, 2007 by Josh

While the effect of adult films on the format war may be a heavily contested, the fact remains that there is a huge demand for this type of material. In Japan, the ability to release adult material on Blu-ray just got a whole lot easier. Assist Corp, who has handled most of the early adult Blu-ray content in Japan, has partnered with a company based in Taiwan to begin replication of adult titles. They are expected to begin production next month. Sony has long mandated that, while they will not allow their own production facilities to replicate adult material, they will assist any company which wants to do so. With the addition of this new production facility (which purchased the manufacturing equipment directly from Sony), adult content producers now have an additional outlet to manufacturer their features in high definition.

im going to wait before i buy a blu ray or hd dvd player to see what direction to go. i would like to have the xbox 360 over the ps3 so maybe i will end up with both in the end.

Get blu-ray if you have to. HBO and New line just dropped HD-DVD.

The thing is, by the time there is any real market penetration we will be downloading to a box rather than playing a disc.
