Bill S-10: Mandatory Minimum Sentences for drug crimes

I wish I had the stomach to read it!

I wish I had the stomach to read it!

Senator Wallace is pretty pathetic. He heard from many witnesses that the bill is a step backwards, but he just can't seem to wrap his head around it. He must not want to understand.

Here's his May 11, 2010 Speech (and Q&A) in the Senate regarding Bill S-10:

The Liberals need to find a competent leader, to fight the evil Harper regime. To bad Jack Layton wasn't the Liberals leader.

I think Rae would do a better job then Iggy, although the Liberals have this unwritten rule, where the alternate from french-canadian leader, to english-canadian leader. If this follows the next leader would be french-canadian, and I don't have a clue who it would be, which does not speak well for the Liberals. Although, you may be right, it may be Rae, as it was a funny thing that he did not contest Iggy, when Dion stepped down. Maybe, there was a deal made, that the Liberals would give Rae the next shot at the leadership.

I continue to be disgusted at the rapid decline of our once wonderful nation. It's one blunder after another, from the millions spent on the joke that was G8/G20, to this bill. Our nation's government no longer acknowledges the views or will of the people. It is truly sad, we are being duped, and there isn't much we can do about it. We are willing to give Quebec a shot at separatism, but we can't give a naturally occurring plant a fair shake?

Our "leaders" know they can sneak bills through, re-write them, disguise them, whatever it takes. Despite the majority of Canadians pro-marijuana views, it is still illegal here. When the majority feels a law is unjust, how can it be just to continue enforcing it? While we spend billions to jail, and fight marijuana users, thousands of Canadians can't afford to put a roof over their head, or feed their fucking families. How can starving homeless Canadians be less important that enforcing an un-just law? Its down right wrong.
Marijuana, will not be legal in my life time, despite the progress being made. It will likely never be legal in Canada, unless it becomes legal in the US, and that is even more unlikely.

Unfortunately the United States of Limiting Freedoms, is the single most detrimental cause to my beloved country. Our policies, our laws, all ride on the simple fact that our politicians number 1 priority is to emulate, and appease the American government, oh and keeping their jobs is up there too(Holding a seat of power and being pro-pot is difficult to say the least).

If this bill is defeated, there will be another, and another, and another. It will not stop, there are too many other interests protected by pot being illegal, the prison system, pharmaceuticals, politician's jobs etc.

We have to face it Canada, our leaders no longer follow or abide by the will of the People. We no longer matter. We can march, we can protest, we can provide all of the positives that come with out views, and it will matter not. We are in need of a true revolution, the government needs to be restored to the people, but alas, that will never happen either, we have become too complacent, too easily controlled, and too willing to accept what we do not agree with. We are no longer the True North, strong and free.

I am a Proud Canadian, but I am far from being proud of Canada. I am hurt as a Canadian, that our amazing country is being raped, and abused. We are no longer free. We no longer can look at our country with pride and admiration. We are too close to becoming America's hat. I cannot believe that a country, who puts such an emphasis on our friendly nature and our country's natural beauty, can continue to criminalize one of the most useful, beneficial, and friendly plants in the world.

Every day, it becomes worse and worse. Every day, my Canada, the country I love, is made to be a monster I hate. Maybe Quebec had the right Idea, for different reasons, because, quite frankly, if things continue of the path that we are currently on, I want to get the fuck out of here.

Edit: Oh, In the words of a wise man named Joe "Privatized Prisons! What he fuck is that!

VIDEO: Bill S-10 Senate Committee (10/20/10)
Justice Minister, Rob Nicholson makes his opening statement

http://www.youtube.com/CannabisFactsForCdns

Bill S-10 seeks to impose a Mandatory Prison Sentence of 6 - 9 months on a person caught growing as few as 6 cannabis plants if there is evidence of trafficking or intent to traffic (Def'n: to sell, trade or give to another person, or to have the intent to any of those things).

A bill's title, "Penalties for organized drug crime act" is very misleading... purposefully. This bill will scoop up lots of small fish and no kingpins.

FYI: There have been four S-10 meetings of the Senate Cttee so far (Oct. 20,21 & 27,28)
The Senate Cttee meetings are webcast live, on Wed. @ 4:15pm and Thu @ 10:30 am.

Thanks for the update FRank. I was wondering what was going on.

I was thinking the same thing. It's also gonna be good business growing in Cali and shipping to Kansas for 500$oz. No borders.

Download the unrevised floor transcripts from the first four committee meetings (Word documents) from here:

There's also links to the site that provides webcasts of the senate cttee meetings live.

I've uploaded a couple clips to YouTube of Justice Minister Rob Nicholson's appearance before the committee.
