Thks for the breakdown vapeman24, and the warnings are valid.

I'm confined to an 8x6" glass mason jar with clamp locks, and a hand crank pump for now, so I still need to transfer the initial purge to a smaller dish to fit my "chamber".

All I've been doing after that transfer is place the dish on a coffee maker heating tray until liquid/molton then transfer to the chamber and draw 28 vac for 5 mins a few times, back to heat once and a final vac.

I've only managed to auto budder this strain of Blue Domina so far with my process, but will try again with a few diff strains as their produced.

I'm so small (read: personal) use, that I can't warrant a larger or more extravagant set up, but it's always nice to see/watch here on the forums.

on vector they don't actually say that though. read the can, it says 5x+ it's called "quintuplus" which to me seems to be a made up marketing term. and from my understanding, the rating means how many times the butane was filtered before it was made into fuel, so it doesn't actually mean that 5x filtered is more pure butane. I've seen very little difference in using King, Lucienne and Vector except cost to produce product. i would say 9/10 people wouldn't be able to tell the difference in oil I've made with King and oil made with Vector.

but hey, if you can't tell the difference more power to you, you'll save $$ i guess. other than vector the only brands i'll trust are the ones with the UK "zero impurities" stamp, i.e. lucienne, colibri, london, newport

We used to only use vector, but found a smoke shop that sells the mega plus 5X....did the mirror test and it left only the faintest hint of a fog, then it went away. Doesn't seem quite as clean as the vector but we don't notice a difference in the taste at all. And hell, it beats the price of vector by over $3 per can! Can't argue with that!

Ok, so I have completed my little project. The idea was to get as much taste and smell out of the oil that I made.

I managed to find this little purging device. With slight modifications I used that. It only holds 100ml but I am only making this for myself so no biggy.

I ran 3 lots of roughly chopped up heads (home grown and cured) through the purger and then ground the remains of them and run the powder through again.
I used a doubled over paper coffee filter to filter and about half a can of butane each time.


So this was the result after butane treatment. As soon as I had purged the weed into the tray I put the tray into a bath of boiling water. As soon as the water started to cool I put more boiling water in.
This was the result after about an hour of this.
btw I didnt whip this as it was extremely tacky and stuck to anything it touched.

after a few minutes in the freezer it was like glass and easily shattered, but if I touched one of the shards it would immediately stick to my finger and leave sticky oily residue that was very hard to get off whatever it touched.

I then used isopropyl alcohol to clean up the tray, my fingers and any other sticky bits. I melted it all into the prop and then poured it all into this sundae glass. I then put this over a pan of boiling water on the stove until the glass broke and I had to transfer the liquid to a smaller cup.

Once in the cup and reduced to a very think molasses texture. I then would apply the cup to a bath of boiling water and stir vigorously until the water cooled. Id then cool (in fridge) or freeze for a few minutes, then repeat until I got the oil to a thick paste. This took about 3 days on and off, whenever I needed to leave it I would freeze it.

At this point now its like a very thick molasses. I cant smell any prop but I wanted to keep going with it. At this point I smoked a small shard when I removed it from the freezer and the taste was almost indistinguishable. near no taste and no bad smell. I was happy.

I decided I wanted to try to get it as thick as possible at room temp. So I set it in boiling water and stirred it vigorously for about 10 minutes. Let it cool to room temp, then did it again. Then next time I just let it sit in the boiling water with no stirring and did that twice.

The end result was this in the cup

which is like a thick kind of sludge. Has nice consistency at room temp, like toffee (taffy?) and while it does still stick to my fingers if touched, I can now remove most of it by 'dabbing'.

Its certainly not the glass that you guys come up with, but I think I have achieved my purpose of making some strong smoke without the bad taste and smell that my previous batch had.

I havent frozen or cooled this lot yet and I havent smoked any yet. Im about to do that soon :)

So please let me know if I can improve this process at all. Im doing this super cheap and just using parts around the house if possible. no vaccuum purge kits or the like for me unfortunately.

Now I just need a good smoking device :)

I cannot seem to get the awful flavor to go away even after doing the heat purges. It seems this oil is ruined and I will be looking for other butane to use. Or I think I will try the CO2 pressure cooker setup I was designing.

Sorry to hear that Tokingham! We just made a batch the other night using vector (our local shop was out of the mega plus). It's a little bit more pricey ($50 for 6 shipped to you from ebay), but where we live it's either the one store or the internet when it comes to most things! We gave it 3 hot water baths and let it sit for about an hour before we scraped and heat purged it, and after only about 3 turns on the heat pad we tested it and didn't get even the faintest hint of butane. I wonder if it could be the butane you are using. Have you ever tried doing the mirror test? If it dries on the mirror and leaves any residue that could be why you have such a bad taste. The only other thing I can think is maybe it's the material you are using....are you using any big fan leaves? We found that when we use the bigger fan leaves the oil has a much runnier consistency and the taste is pretty bad, so we have taken to using only buds and the frosty sugar trim, and we haven't had a bad result since.
Either way, I hope you keep experimenting with bho! It really is worth it once you get it down! Try ordering a case of vector and see if you notice a difference. And let us know how it all turns out!

I did a mirror test and it failed foggy style.

I was using buds. I made the switch to oils and got a dome + nail set up and now I can taste the truth of the oil it seems. Before I would never taste the left over butane and I thought it was all out. Its good to figure this out now and not continue smoking butane impurities.

I'll get a can of vector down town and run a small batch.

Yeah, bad butane REALLY makes a difference. That's why we test all new kinds (although there's only been one, lol) on the mirror before we do a run with it. Just finished a run with vector and cannot believe how fast all the tane bubbled out with the first warm water bath! By far the best stuff we've used! Yeah, if you can just go pick up a can of it I would highly recommend it!!

Be careful!

Butane is used because to get it into a liquid or sub-critical state requires much lower pressures, than CO2.

Butane worry about flash ignition.
CO2 worry about BOOM! (part failure)
Check out paintball to learn more about CO2, common cheap propellant for paintballs, until one ups the ante gets a Scuba tank, and runs HPA (high pressure air).

So, using a weighted-vent pressure cooker, how are you going to keep the CO2 gas in the vessel, or get it into a liquid state?

Are you going to recapture the gas somehow, like a still?
Is there a thread somewhere on doing this?
I am not familiar in anyway with this tech?
You gonna dump a bunch of liquid CO2 in there like you were using water?

I'm interested. What's the plan?

C02 reaches critical state at 31.1C/88F and 72.9 atmospheres or about 1086 PSI.

If the safety valve is able to hold it at that pressure, what is the burst pressure of the pressure cooker that you are using?
