"Fire, Explosion at Honey Oil Lab Damages Hollywood Apartment Complex

By Annette Arreola and Kevin LaBeach

A fire triggered by a small explosion at a narcotics lab that produces honey oil damaged a Hollywood apartment complex early Thursday morning, police said.

Crews responded to a fire at around 2:45 a.m. in the 1900 block of North Cahuenga Boulevard, according to the LAPD Hollywood Division. An explosion and a fire occurred inside a lab that produces honey oil or hash oil, police said.

A man was taken to the hospital for severe burns to his face, chest and hands.
The apartment complex was flooded after the fire activated the sprinkler system.

Los Angeles Police Department narcotics detectives and Los Angeles Fire Department arson investigators were on scene.

No further details were immediately available."

"3 badly burned in Rio Dell hash lab explosion

By Ruth Schneider, [email protected], @RuthOUTspoken on Twitter

POSTED: 11/12/16, 1:46 PM PST | UPDATED: 3 DAYS AGO 0 COMMENTS

Three men in their early 20s were badly burned when a detached garage at a property in Rio Dell exploded in flames on Wednesday night.

“There was an active butane honey oil extraction lab” at the site, said Rio Dell Police Sgt. John Beauchaine on Saturday. “It was an outbuilding on the southeast corner of the property.”

He said the men suffered extensive burns.

“Based on the fire personnel at the scene, the two victims that were located on the property were 90 percent burned.”

A third victim — who was found about two blocks away — had burns on 40 percent to 60 percent of his body, Beauchaine said.

The burn victims were transported to UC Davis because of the severity of the burns.

Beauchaine said the incident is still under investigation.

He added that the Scotia and Fortuna fire departments assisted Rio Dell’s volunteer crew in extinguishing the fire.

He added the Humboldt County District Attorney’s Office is also handling the case."

"Police: Hash oil, bomb materials found in garage

By Gabrielle Porter

Tuesday, November 15, 2016

A Grand Junction man was ordered held on a $250,000 cash-only bond after police raiding a marijuana grow and hash oil extraction system in his garage found what officers believed were homemade pipe bomb components, according to police records.

When police searched 31-year-old Sean Garibaldi’s Pear Park home at 389 Sorrel St. on Nov. 8, they came across more than 20 boxes, bags and plastic bottles containing “what appeared to be multiple varieties of black powder, smokeless powder and accelerant powder from fireworks,” an arrest affidavit said.

An officer also found “numerous small pieces of different types of plastic pipe,” many of which were capped or glued on one end and had small holes drilled in them, the report said.

“Based on my training and experiences the totality of these items together indicate that Garibaldi was attempting to make or had made small improvised explosive devices with the components,” Officer Colter Church wrote in the affidavit.

Police and other law enforcement officers from the Western Colorado Drug Task Force also found a walled-off grow room with a single marijuana plant in it and equipment they believe was for using butane to extract hash oil, the report said.

Garibaldi’s garage bore some evidence of having been through an explosion already, Church wrote.

“There were numerous holes in the ceiling and walls approximately the sizes of the butane cans going through the walls at different angles,” he wrote in the affidavit. “Several of the holes also still had butane cans impaled into the holes in the walls and ceiling. This damage appeared to have been caused by an explosion.”

Police also found a .22 caliber rifle; a large amount of ammunition in several calibers and sizes; and a safe with a small amount of suspected methamphetamine, used and unused syringes, baggies, an “unknown white powder” that wasn’t identified and several pills.

Garibaldi, who Church noted was “extremely cooperative” with law enforcement, admitted that he was using butane to extract hash oil, but said the .22 caliber rifle was a gift for his son, 4. Garibaldi also said a substance found in a pan on his stove was “marijuana-infused caramel candy that he and a friend made in order to give out as gifts to their adult friends over the holidays,” the report said.

He denied knowing anything about the drugs found in the safe. He faces drug-related charges including possession with intent to distribute and a felony count of possession of explosives after his Thursday arrest.

Garibaldi is due to return to court Nov. 22 in his case."

Hash lab explodes and sparks fire in Ventura apartment building

By Doug Smith

November 25, 2016, 6:45 PM

A hashish lab explosion set off a fire in a midtown Ventura apartment building Friday afternoon, but the four occupants managed to escape without injury, authorities said.

Responding just after 2 p.m. to a report of an explosion in a large apartment complex in the 300 block of Hurst Avenue, firefighters quickly put out the blaze in the kitchen of a second-story unit, Ventura Fire Department Battalion Chief Douglas Miser said.

Firefighters determined that the blast was caused by the ignition of butane that was being used to extract hashish oil from marijuana.

No major injuries were reported but paramedics assisted one person who complained of difficulty breathing, authorities said.

Only one unit was damaged, and the loss was estimated at less than $10,000, Miser said.

Ventura police detectives remained at the scene Friday night “to identify all persons responsible for the crime,” Cmdr. Terry Medina said.

Indoor marijuana farmers can create potential fire hazards by using natural gas, propane or butane to power carbon dioxide generators that make the plants grow. In recent years across the country, similar methods used to produce more potent marijuana extracts have resulted in explosions and other catastrophes.

In marijuana production-related accidents, more than 30 people were injured last year in Colorado from butane explosions involving hash oil — a concentrated form of marijuana extracted from the plant's leaves and flowers.

The Associated Press contributed to this report."

Either this is a superbly done satirical piece mocking the "New Method for making BHO" video by Jamus Herbea, found here,

His second and third in the series are just as perverted. Thumb this bugger down!!

He has about 20-25 kilos of air in that room. As long as he keeps doing small batches and the butane bubbles off slowly he might be OK, but anything more than a two cans would be suicide.
Do you think LEO would consider it "murder" if someone were to get this guy's address and mail him a pound of trim so he can start doing larger runs? 4th of July was months ago.

From 1:20 to 2:20 he fights getting a nozzle adapter out of the second can's top, while he has a nozzle adapter right in front of him on the first can.

This is not the state of mind to be in when working with an extremely flammable solvent.

Boiled off on the fucking stove... I want this video gone.

I feel so sorry for the woman (mother, grandmother?) holding the camera, it appears she's being hustled, sure sounds like she's doped up.

"Evidence from Springfield trailer fire 'consistent with' butane hash oil production, police say

By Jim Ryan | The Oregonian/OregonLive on December 06, 2016 at 8:20 PM, updated December 06, 2016 at 9:32 PM

Authorities seized evidence "consistent with" butane hash oil production at the scene of a fire that left a man burned in Springfield on Monday, police said.

Juan Andres Cisneros, 24, was transferred to a Portland hospital for treatment of burns to his arms, face and leg, Springfield police said in a news release. The Monday afternoon fire destroyed a trailer on Daisy Street in Springfield.

Cisneros' mother, 7-year-old brother and 5-year-old nephew escaped the trailer, police said. The fire started in Cisneros' bedroom, according to police.

Police said investigators haven't yet determined "the exact method of ignition" but noted that evidence seized "is consistent with the manufacture of hash oil." The investigation is still underway.

Making hash oil, a potent and popular form of cannabis, can be dangerous. Butane, a cheap and flammable solvent, is used to extract tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, from marijuana flowers and leaves. It can quickly fill a room, for example, and something as common as a pilot light can ignite a fireball.

Gov. Kate Brown signed a law earlier this year making unlicensed production of marijuana extracts a felony. The provision is intended to target homemade butane hash oil setups.

Butane-fueled explosions are relatively common in Oregon and elsewhere. An October blast rocked a legal marijuana business in Astoria, sending two people to Legacy Oregon Burn Center. A BHO-related explosion destroyed a Medford home in August. And Springfield police said a butane hash oil lab was likely to blame for an explosion that propelled part of a home's refrigerator into its front yard in May.

Police ask anyone who has information about Monday's fire to call the department at 541-726-3714.

"House explosion illustrates hash oil danger
Using butane to extract THC from marijuana can cause blasts, fires

Joe LaFugey
Published: December 8, 2016, 9:15 pm Updated: December 8, 2016, 9:16 pm

MUSKEGON, Mich. (WOOD) — The call on Monday came in as a kitchen fire, routine for firefighters in most circumstances. But this fire was anything but routine.

Arriving Muskegon Township firefighters found they had much more on their hands.

“This is what we pulled up on, with heavy black smoke coming out of the front of the home,” Muskegon Township Fire Inspector Mark Nocolai said, showing a picture of the home on Laketon Avenue with a picture window blown out in the front yard.

It was no stovetop grease fire. Something inside the kitchen caused an explosion, knocking drywall off twisted wall studs.

One of the people who escaped confirmed what Nicolai knew would eventually become a problem for firefighters.

“It was determined at that point that they were doing some process of manufacturing hash oil,” Nicolai said.

It’s an emerging problem he learned of during a recent training conference.laketon-avenue-hash-oil-explosion-interior

“In Michigan, it’s relatively new,” he said. “It’s predominant out in the western states. The instructor I had came from one of the western states, and he advised us that if we haven’t seen this yet, more than likely it is coming. ”

The oil, when extracted from the marijuana plant, contains a high amount THC, pot’s psychoactive ingredient. But getting it out of the plant is tricky and hazardous.

“It’s very, very dangerous and very explosive,” Nicolai said.

Methods vary, but generally, butane or propane is used to saturate the plant and extract the oil. But the gasses have to come back out of the final product. That’s done by either cooking it on a stovetop or freezing it out in a refrigerator.

Butane and propane are highly flammable. The smallest spark — anything from static electricity to a refrigerator compressor — can set off that gas.

The process isn’t only dangerous for the people cooking it. Firefighters are put at a higher risk.

“There’s always the hazard of secondary explosion,” Nicolai explained. “Are there residual containers around that haven’t exploded?”

On top of being dangerous, it’s illegal in Michigan to process marijuana with butane.

The case has been turned over to police."

Gov. Kate Brown signed a law earlier this year making unlicensed production of marijuana extracts a felony.

Thats a pretty good reason to do it inside where nobody will see you, I've committed felonies outdoors before and it always sketchy as fuck.
Have you seen any articles yet which say something like
"Strict drug laws prevented an illegal indoor butane extraction today when police showed up and stopped the butane flowing before it blew up. Much property and several lives were saved including these cute kittens (photo of police officer with kittens)"
or does law enforcement always show up at the scene of the crime 15 minutes too late and then just take notes about what happened? Maybe if they had faster cars they could get to the illegal extractor's location in time to prevent the crime? 88mph DeLoreans is what they need.
That would save a lot more lives than putting some sorry retard covered in 3rd degree burns in jail.

Exacerbating the issue - if it really is an issue and not something blow out of proportions by the media (do natural gas fires get the same level of attention or is that variety of flame somehow less damaging to human flesh?) - is that there is no legal way for someone to have their homegrown recreational material proceed by a legal extractor.

Redmond 'hash oil' blast: Pipe bombs, guns, illegal pot grow found

Man, woman flown to Portland with serious burns

By: KTVZ.COM news sources
Posted: Dec 12, 2016 04:17 PM PST
Updated: Dec 14, 2016 07:58 AM PST

REDMOND, Ore. - A search of a southwest Redmond home and garage where a “hash oil” explosion seriously burned a man and woman Monday afternoon turned up 11 pipe bombs, 14 guns and an illegal marijuana grow, as well as $26,000 in cash, police said Tuesday.

Here’s the full news release issued by Lt. Curtis Chambers:

Yesterday at about 2:00 pm, Deschutes County 911 Dispatch received a call about an explosion at 2154 SW 24th Street, Redmond. Initial reports were two people were suffering burn-related injuries. Redmond Police and Redmond Fire & Rescue responded.

Police and fire personnel found two people, one male, and one female, suffering from serious burns to their body, including their faces. Both were transported by ambulance to St. Charles Redmond and both were eventually flown to Legacy Oregon Burn Center at Legacy Emanuel Medical Center in Portland. Their current condition is unknown. The man lived at the location and the woman elsewhere in Redmond.

Law enforcement discovered evidence of a marijuana butane hash oil (BHO) lab inside the garage, where the explosion occurred. Redmond Police, with the help and expertise of the Central Oregon Drug Enforcement team, applied for a search warrant to search for evidence of Unlawful Manufacture of Marijuana and its derivatives.

During the search of the residence, authorized by a Deschutes County Circuit Court judge, a marijuana growing operation was discovered. The growing operation far exceeded the amounts legally permitted. Over 50 mature marijuana plants were seized as evidence. Additionally, approximately $26,000 in cash, 14 firearms and evidence of a BHO lab was seized.

While searching the garage, where the explosion occurred, 11 pipe bombs were found, with racing fuel nearby. The Oregon State Police Bomb Squad was contacted and responded from Salem to take possession of the pipe bombs and render them safe.

“Our community is extremely fortunate this incident was not any worse than it was,” Chambers said in a news release. “BHO lab explosions have been known to cause large fires, knock homes off of foundations and cause property damage to neighboring buildings. There likely would have been far more damage had the racing fuel and or the pipe bombs exploded.”

At this time, no arrests have been made, and no one has been charged with a crime. A report documenting this incident will be sent to the Deschutes County District Attorney’s Office for review, and a charging decision. As a result, the Redmond Police Department will not be identifying those injured in this incident.

“Hash oil,” also known as “honey oil,” is derived from marijuana. The “hash” or “honey” is super-concentrated Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana.

“Hash oil” is made by utilizing highly flammable materials, such as butane, to refine and concentrate the THC, making a product which can range upwards to 90% THC content. Today’s marijuana sold in recreational and medical dispensaries typically have THC content ranging from 15% to 20%, and some as high as 30%.

There have been a dramatic increase in the number of marijuana BHO lab explosions in Oregon in recent years -- to the extent, the Oregon State Police has reformed several Clandestine Lab Response Teams. The last time these teams were being utilized was during the home methamphetamine manufacturing boom of the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Your Redmond Police Department will continue to investigate this incident until the District Attorney’s Office renders an opinion on any criminal charges. We take the safety of our community very seriously; any person utilizing a marijuana BHO lab within our community will be dealt with to the fullest extent granted by law. If you have knowledge of a marijuana BHO lab in your community, please contact your local law enforcement agency. All Deschutes County police agencies can be reached by calling 541-693-6911.

Drug lab blast sparks Marysville apartment fire

Posted: Tuesday, December 27, 2016 7:42 pm | Updated: 8:31 pm, Tue Dec 27, 2016.

By Monica Vaughan/[email protected]

A Marysville apartment fire early Tuesday that displaced at least five people, including small children, is suspected to have been caused by the explosion of an illegal butane honey (hash) oil lab.

A pregnant woman who managed to escape the fully engulfed apartment in the 1100 block of East 17th Street was transported to Rideout Regional Medical Center, complaining of smoke inhalation, police said.

The pregnant woman's fiancé, Atavien Stephen Whitesell, was arrested on suspicion of arson and manufacturing a controlled substance. Whitesell, 20, was booked into Yuba County Jail with bail set at $500,000.

The investigation began at 12:25 a.m. Tuesday when first responders were dispatched to a report of a structure fire at the Lakecrest Apartments, according to a press release issued by the Marysville Police Department.

Whitesell's apartment was found engulfed in flames. Neighboring apartment residents were evacuated.

The suspect was inside the apartment with his fiancée and their friend at the time of the fire. All managed to escape. Other residents complained of smoke inhalation and were examined on the street. Another resident suffered cuts on his face from a window that exploded.

The American Red Cross and the Trauma Intervention Team responded to the fire to assist the displaced residents.

During the fire investigation, several containers of butane, along with other instruments used to manufacture concentrated cannabis, also known as "honey oil" were allegedly found in Whitesell's apartment.

The investigation is ongoing.

Whitesell, according to online Yuba County Superior Court records, was charged last March with two felony marijuana counts.

In September, he was charged with three felonies, two involving firearms and one involving drugs.

He pleaded no contest to being a felon in possession of a firearm and was placed on three years probation on Dec. 5. He was sentenced to 77 days in jail with credit for time served, according to the online docket.

The March drug case is still pending. He's due back in court Jan. 5.

In October 2015, Yuba City police arrested Whitesell in the 1200 block of Plumas Street on suspicion of possession of marijuana for sale.

MCKINLEYVILLE, Calif. - Arcata Fire determined a Butane Honey Oil lab was the cause of the explosion at a McKinleyville triplex Monday.

Officials said at approximately 3:30 p.m., Humboldt County Sheriff's deputies along with Arcata Fire responded to a triplex residence on the 1800 block of Ocean Drive for a report of an explosion.

Upon arrival, deputies received information that a 24-year-old man was reported to have received severe burns from the explosion and was transported away from the scene by a private party prior to law enforcement arrival.

Deputies initiated immediate evacuation procedures of the surrounding buildings. The Humboldt County Drug Enforcement Unit responded and a search warrant was obtained for the residence.

Law enforcement contacted local hospitals and were unable to locate the 24-year-old burn victim. Officials said this case is currently being investigated by the Humboldt County Sheriff's Office and the Humboldt County Drug Enforcement Unit.

Police: BHO lab, used to extract THC from marijuana, caused explosion in Carroll County
by Elizabeth TyreeTuesday, January 17th 2017

CARROLL Co., Va. (WSET) -- The Carroll County Sheriff's Office and State Police's Bureau of Criminal Investigation's Wytheville Field Office is still investigating an explosion inside a home on Thursday.

Investigators have now identified a Butane Honey Oil lab as the cause of the explosion.

A BHO lab is the process of extracting THC from marijuana plants using butane gas.

Police said the process creates a highly-flammable atmosphere and great risk for explosion.

The explosion happened around 6:45 a.m. inside the home on Old Mabry Place near the intersection of Double Cabin Road.

Police said there were four people inside the home at the time of the explosion and a man was taken to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in North Carolina where he is still being treated for serious burns.

An adult female and two juveniles were not injured.

During the course of the investigation, marijuana and an illegal hallucinogenic narcotic were seized from inside the residence.

OCPD: Illegal marijuana producer burns 220 Molalla Ave building

Created on Monday, 09 January 2017 | Written by Raymond Rendleman

Tualatin Valley Fire And Rescue, along with the Oregon City Police Department, assisted Clackamas Fire, which is investigating the incident as stemming from an illegal marijuana operation producing butane hash oil.

At 9:25 a.m. on Jan. 6, multiple 911 calls reported a fire at 220 Molalla Ave. in Oregon City.

The fire was contained to the second story, and no injuries were reported.
Tualatin Valley Fire And Rescue, along with the Oregon City Police Department, assisted with the fire, which is being investigated as an illegal marijuana operation producing butane hash oil.

During the fire, firefighters located what they believed was an illegal marijuana operation being conducted inside the commercial building and notified OCPD of their findings. Cannabinoid extract is defined by state law as "a substance obtained by separating cannabinoids from marijuana by: A chemical extraction process using a hydrocarbon-based solvent, such as butane, hexane or propane." Under investigation are the crimes of unlawful manufacture of marijuana (ORS 475.856), a Class B felony; unlawful possession of marijuana (ORS 475.864), a Class C felony; and reckless burning (ORS 164.335), a Class A misdemeanor.

While executing a search warrant, OCPD said it seized a large amount of marijuana, cannabinoid extract and evidence of the unlawful manufacture of marijuana, specifically butane hash oil (BHO). BHO is commonly called, shatter, wax glass, budder, honey oil, live resin, and dabs.

Although persons of interest have been identified, OCPD Captain Shaun Davis said hese names will not be release at this time, due to the ongoing investigation. Fire and police officials want the public to know that BHO extractions are extremely dangerous.

"Butane is highly volatile and can ignite easily," Davis said. "To ignite butane it takes a minimal ignition source like static electricity. Using butane in the extraction process can lead to a high concentration of volatile gas in the area where this extraction is being done. Concentrations of butane inside a building or in a confined space, if ignited can cause an explosion and/or fire which can cause serious injury to include burns and also death."

On Jan. 6, Clackamas Fire District crews quickly arrived and found a large amount of fire and smoke coming from the second story of a commercial building. They immediately went to work gaining access to the structure while the truck company went to the roof to ventilate.

Other crews arrived, found the interior stairway, and were able to contain the fire.

Crews remained on scene throughout the morning performing salvage operations on the first floor. Since temperatures were below freezing while firefighters were spraying the building with water, they took steps to keep it from turning to a sheet of dangerous ice around the building.

PCSO investigating after butane hash oil lab fire in San Tan Valley
Vivian Padilla
8:06 AM, Feb 25, 2017
1:00 PM, Feb 26, 2017

SAN TAN VALLEY, AZ - The sheriff's office in Pinal County is investigating after they believe a butane hash oil lab sparked a fire and injured one man in San Tan Valley.

According to officials, shortly before 10 p.m. on Friday, crews were called out to a house fire near Hunt Highway and Johnson Ranch Boulevard.

Once inside, firefighters discovered a man who had been severely burned. He is now in the hospital with third-degree burns to his legs, arms and head. The man also suffered severe smoke and heat damage to his lungs.

PCSO said the man was in critical but stable condition come Sunday.

Officials believe there was an active butane hash oil lab at the residence. Seventy cans of butane were located in the home along with marijuana, butane honey oil and a butane hash oil extractor.

The fire spread to a nearby home, and two homes were evacuated. No other injuries occurred.

PCSO said detectives are working on charges against the man with the county attorney's office.

Officials said the fire was not an explosion, but neighbors did tell them they heard popping noises during the fire.

Possible hash oil explosion in Lafayette
Allison Sylte, KUSA 1:31 PM. MST February 16, 2017

LAFAYETTE - A fiery incident in Lafayette that left two men in the hospital with serious burns Wednesday evening is being investigated as a hash oil explosion, according to Lafayette Police.

Firefighters were first dispatched to the blaze at 1095 Modred Street just after 4 p.m., according to Lafayette Police.

When crews arrived, they found the two victims and an uninjured woman. They also rescued a dog from inside the house.

Investigators say they found a large marijuana cultivation inside the home – prompting them to look into hash oil as a potential cause for the fire and explosion.

This has not yet been confirmed. The Lafayette Police Department Detective Division and the Multi-Agency Fire Investigation Team obtained a search warrant to search the house on Thursday.
