I guess I am officially an old fart...havent even logged onto here in probably 10 years lol. Anyways, setting up a small tent to crush through a fair amount of seeds to find keeper phenos. Plan is to have a 4x4 tray with roughly 32 plants, flowered them at 6" or so, just to pick for color, trichome, aroma etc. Also to sequester males. So, old school SOG - what light should I. use? I wouldn't be bummed if it yielded well, but that's a secondary concern. I have been using DE HPS for ever.

Look on fb market place. Look for hlg brand. 650r Diablo is what I'm running in a 4x4 tent. It's equivalent to a de 1k

If you go led you need to completely forget about HPS environment. It wont work with leds as it is cold light, not warm like hps and bulbs. If youre in a real cold environment it may even be better to go for a couple of bulbs. But other than that id look into HLG if you have the $$$ and stateside.

Really depends on your climate and what type of grow skills you got. Weve beaten all former HPS quality and yields with our led kits but its diy and not standard china growlights. But we generally have more heat than cold. And we have limited amos.

Best Light Quality = 400V HPS
Best Spread Quality = LEDs

Beaten HPS quality ? I doubt that very much sir, you can't beat natural light (sun, hids) with harmful EMF induced light (leds) ;)

A HID isn't natural light. Nor can it do anything without some emf being applied.

They are both more like heat sources than light sources though. Thus the LED grower is relieved by the reduced heat, or forced to find some. With just a limited number of growers in the Goldilocks zone, where the porridge was just right.

Hids are not natural light, all bulbs are artifical lighting same as leds. The plant doesnt know where the light comes from, only what genes is triggered. This whole leds intrinsicly bad is rubbish and really without any proof, but theres a bunch of leds that really dont work that well, i agree. Problem is most led manufacturer only looks at electrical efficiency rather than plant biology; too much green and 660 added for efficiency when it really doesnt help the plant produce quality. I think youve never grown with leds like this:

IMG-20241108-WA0007.jpg

If you know how to balance the spectrum correctly it all your led issues goes away; standard high efficiency led spectrum doesnt cover chlorophyll a and b properly on both blue and red side which leads to dodgy phytochrome activation. You need a good balance and not just raw light efficiency, if you dont get it right then the plant cannot complete the chemical cycle properly or youll end up making the plant think its in a low light environment (chloro b>a) Blurple manufacturers knew this, but pretended that high intensity doesnt matter to the plant. Both the spectrum first and the intensity first camps are wrong: you need both. If you really need that "precious" infra red then just add 10% incandescent regular ligh bulb for winter time, its like having hps on tap. Try it, youd be surprised...

Edit: the emf argument is bogus, 400V HPS runs on AC so also has electromagnetic frequency. Infact most modern leds run on a continuous DC current and pwm is only used as a control signal for dimming. You see this if you make a video of your ledlight: it doesnt flicker like some used to back in the day.

Lol, as always with Ca++, a lot of words, no facts, haha HIDs don't emitt EMF, check the facts before you replay sounding all smart but you are most definitely NOT.

@Rocket Soul
You are a led salesman, you have no say in this debate, I'm sorry.
But, I'll answer you as you are again wrong and that's surprising coming from someone that build led kits but don't know nothing about them
HIDs don't emitt EMF, sorry.
HIDs use the same principles of the sun when making light (magnetic current passing through gas)
Leds use a chemical reaction between alloys.
Get your facts and science straight, not to offend you but I wouldn't buy anything from you after reading all the mumbo jumbo you write and claim to know.

Again, you can argue all you want, you are biased.
These are the cold hard facts, take it or leave it.

The EMF debate is bougs ? lol why because Rocket Soul said so ?
Grow your plants under microwave light, no problem, but as a led builder you are ignoring facts that don't suit you (ofcourse they don't, it hurts your sells haha)
You led builders found a new way of making money because the hid game is so cheap.
you won't let this cash cow off so easy we know haha, no matter how lame and harmful the product you are selling is.
Money money money 🤑
