well I don't want to get killed driving a scooter behind the asian lady (no offense) driving here big ass suv right behind me.

I take the bus this semester and it sucks bigtime, stinks, all the vibration makes me want to puke etc. also takes way longer to get there.

yeah motorcylces are too dangerous for me, just a few months ago I saw a car that hit a bike (cars fault) and it was not pretty the driver of the car was fine just his right side was totalled and the guy on the bike was thrown a few meters away on the road and was dead.

I saw his body when driving by and his motorcycle across the road. the cops were covering him.

The funny thing is that people buy cars because they feel that theyre unsafe on a bike because there's too many cars on the road.

If you're going to go on with that sort of mentality, you may as well give up walking too.

The bus might stink (depends on how crappy your bus system is- mine is clean as a whistle), but then with a single-driver car, you're making my planet stink.

As far as the bus "taking too long to get there", the other problem with most car drivers is the impatience they show as soon as they start the engine. Learn to enjoy your life. It's hard to enjoy your life when it blurs past you at 55+MPH

Ever since I've stopped driving everywhere, day-to-day stuff outside of the house is a lot more enjoyable. That includes the bus.

the best deal for an econo car is the chevy prism, it is a toyota corolla (chevy only makes the body and some of the interior) but you can buy it for less money because people pay less for chevy cars because they suck. you could get a used one for like $4,000 and they get like 40 mpg and they usually last for at least 200,000 miles without any problems.

I was looking to buy a economy car in 2003. I was looking at new cars. I wanted new technology in the motor to help reduce my emissions. The other reason was MPG/KPG. I knew i was going to pay on a 5yr loan. So what i did was took the "cost of the car" (after the 5yr payments). I then took the average miles i drove in one days travels, then multiplied that by 365, then multiplied that x5. Then i called and got a quote on car insurance, and multiplied it x5. now that i have a "total owners cost". I did this to the Honda civic (hybrid & gas). Toyota Prius, Mini Cooper, VW Golf TDI, and Ford escort. After i did "the math" to figure out the total owner cost on these vehicles, i went to look and drive them in person. the Honda drove nice and had good features. The Toyota didnt meet my expectations (and its ugly imo), The Mini cooper was just above go-cart quality (looked like i could have made it in my garage), VW golf TDI was pretty good quality all around, The Ford escort was like a cross between the Prius and Mini cooper (I thought ford would have a better escort for how long its been out). After driving these cars, and taking weeks to weigh the options and costs.. I bought the VW TDI golf. Why the Golf and not the jetta?, gas milage on the golf was better and the Golf felt like a better built car. I payed more for my VW than the Ford or Honda upfront at the dealer, BUT since then i have paid way less in operation costs. Plus the golf got rave safety reviews.
I hear that the prius gets better gas milage, but i think that is total crap!. I drove from the northern tip of Washington (pt. angeles) to bakersfield california, at 70+mph and got 63mpg!!! no joke.. i had to do the math three times, then my brother was like "GIMMIE THAT!" and he too came up with the same math as me..!.. I have since been very pleased with my purchase.. The VW is a sound car (for me at least), its drive train has had no problems with it (most important to me). I was looking for most reliable car also.. imagine the parinoia when you have a LB in the trunk and your car breaks down and your 1000 miles from home..!.. you and your LB sitting on the side of the road waiting for the next LEO to pull up and "help you out".. heheh.. Also i read an article about a VW golf TDI getting 400 mpg with a modification already made in Germany..!.. now i'm just waiting for my warranty to wear off before i modify my car to run on veggie oil or bio diesel.... well i hope that helps out a little. be safe, take care.

well if I buy a cheap car it will take me still forever to save up for a newer gti or whatever

also in 2-3 years I have to sell my car anyways as I'll move away for school.

I probably can't afford a nice car until I finish school in lik 6 years......... and then I'll have to make monthly payments for my student loans......so I'll be driving cheap cars for a long ass time......

and then when I get a real job I'll get a what I really a want a 911 turbo.

it always amzes me how people go into debt trying to afford a better way to get from a to b :)

Just get something dependable thats well within your limits. Dont make a car out to be more than what it is ;) Porsche, BMW, Kia or Yugo... its still a gas guzzler in 4 wheels that gets you from A to B.

Dont fall into the trap of marketing. Thats when your belongings begin to own you.

I seriously want a golf gti 1.8t.... I know a guy that has one and he says it's super reliable (has it for 3 years) but that's most likely a bit over 10k, I think 2001 was the first year and they're like 12-15k.

they have a good engine, but that engine is also in cars like audi's and seat leons, which are cheaper than VW's!

yeah for some odd reason the 1.8t a4s are cheaper but some a4s are also older and have the 1.8t.

the a4 is heavier though and the gti is more sporty

the 1.8t stock isn't really great but it's easy to modify.

the new 2.0 turbo gtis are very nice, the styling is much better than the previous 1.8t gti as well, makes me drool whenever I see one.

about the car being just and a to b transportation , right now that is most important but if I had more money I'd definately get the car that I really want instead of some boring economy car.

I"m a car guy so I'm obsessed with cars, more than a form of transportation for me it's a hobby.

thats the thing, A4's are cheap and easily remapped, 150bhp stock chipped to 200-225bhp. golfs are also very heavy cars, dont buy a gti thinking theyre exceptionally quick or owt cos they arent, they dont even deserve the GTI badge and thats the opinion of many, not just me. the R32 is the gti model imo.

you should be able to afford an A4, they go for £1000-2000 over here for the early ones. or if u want lots of mpg, then just buy any old crappy diesel, but you wont like the engine!! theyre not responsive, theyre not fast, they dont rev much and they dont sound nice.
im sure you would easily manage 30-40mpg with a 1.8t if you dont boost much.

how much? the oldest a4 with teh 1.8t not the v6 are at least 8 grand cdn to 12 grand cdn for the early ones

but how realiable will it be with mods/ chip / exhaust I guess. From reading car survey reviews, the audi has a lot of complaints about reliability , probably why they are cheapish to buy.

225hp isn't crazy power for a car weighing as much as the audi but I guess it's decent .

my 944 makes 150hp 143tq so it's not that much slower than a stock 1.8t golf. like .4 slower I think.

I think with the a4 you'd need like 300 hp to make it fun.'

but I'll consider an a4 as well if they are decently reliable...... the positive about the a4 is the quattro / the inteior of the audi is very nice.

audi is german, its more reliable than most and uses alot of parts that the golf does. because its VAG volkswagen audi group.
the 1.8t engines are fine with remap, the same engine is used in the audi TT which is 225bhp.
