This interests me highly because I live in the same area. Thanks for writing about it. I can't hike far because of physical reasons, so I love those roads and hate new gates and don't outdoor grow. A few years back , a friend showed me a old grow spot around here that was kind of interesting. They grew in thick manzanita about 7 feet tall, trimming leaves and branches all the way up leaving only a thin canopy at the top that plenty of light could get through [south facing hill ] . The trunks that were left made perfect posts to hang the deer netting on. It was hard to get through to, even though it was close to a road and and the thin canopy of leaves on top made it look to me like it would be hard to see from the air.

Wow! Thats a great idea! If I needed a way to grow a bunch of plants in a little area, thats the way I'd go! Locked gates suck ass, this area would be much more usefull to me if I could use the roads, but oh well.

Yes, when you consider all the different combinations of potential climates throughout the latitudes of Earth that Cannabis will grow in, and all the combined necessary knowledge of all the different growers around the globe, outdoor growing is even more complicated and diverse than indoor growing.

Its so crazy, some people like still2big with a somewhat swamp grow has to watch out for having too much water.... Some rains came this eyar and the water got 6 ft deep at his gardens!

My thick buds got rained on mid september through the beginning of oct on and off..

Other locations, if you don't provide enough water, the plants die...

Flowering to maturity before hard cold nights is a problem for many people in the north...

Some regions in the south have too much humidity to finish indicas properly... They can also flower the plant for several months a year getting 3 yields plus...

The corn belt has it made... But the only thing is there is little to no true wilderness left in much of it.. We find a way to sneak em in...

that would have helped me 2 years ago (had worst drought ever recorded in my area)
last year we had 12 inches of rain over normal and i lost most of my breeding stock (i harvested only 2 seeds from 60 females) and was only able to harvest a pound of mold free bud and half of that was 2 to 4 weeks early. I hoping for a year like 96' again
i think ill try that method on a site or 2 in case of drought again, thx again for the tip BC

I wanted to get out last week and get more rain harvesters built, but my one free day got used for a family outing to the woods for a Christmas tree. We have gotten about 1" of rain since I built the rain harvesters I've got, so I imagine I should have a decent amount by the time I return to the hills. Its starting to look like I might not get out until Christmas day, and I have a feeling the wife might have a dirty look for me as I announce a trip to the hills after presents have been opened, I just wanna get the water collected as soon as possible, so I can get it stored and buried as quick as possible.

Then a few more trips with gear, and then a final one to plant in mid spring..............

Sooner is better than later when it comes to collecting rain.. Ideally you would have had these built before the rainly season, as in last summer, but then you're talking about dealing with summer foliage in the understory...

Water = buds... golden rule... I can't even immagine how much water falls here during the growing season... Last year in june the water got so high it flooded thousands of acres in this region...

That slope looks pretty steep BACKCOUNTRY. You may be a fellow hillbilly! Hillbillies have spent so much of their lives on slopes like that one, that one leg is longer than the other so they can stand up straight when on a slope.. Check your leg length and get back to us.

I love planting on steep southern facing slopes . I take rocks and build a small damn and then create a flat spot on the slope where i plant my plant. Hikers tend to hike where walking is easier and deer don't seem to view steep slopes as feeding areas as much. Rabbits, ground hogs and other critters don't seem to spend much time there.

I rejoiced a few weeks ago when I first looked at your thread. I immediately went to several of the slopes i grow on and built one of your collection pits about 10 feet up the hill from where the plants are growing and directed rain runoff toward the pit. This summer, I can take a small siphon hose with me, start the flow and water the down hill plants.

I try not to be more active than needed or have stuff like tarps hanging in the trees during the main rifle deer hunting season(generally the last week of Sept-last week of Oct here), places that don't see people the other 11 months can all of the sudden get many visitors in Oct.
I tend to wait until the hunting seasons are petering out in November, and the woods are mine again.

severian- The weather prediction is for partly cloudy,lows in the high 20s highs in the low 40s. My last chance for snow before Christmas was last night, but it stopped about 200' above us, by the looks of the ridge across the way. Darn!

I often watch the Lord of the rings trilogy around this time. I finished the last movie last night. I was always so enamored with the long thin stemmed wooden pipes that they smoked in those movies. Today, after presents were opened, I took a walk in the woods looking for good pieces of hardwood for making pipes. After two hours of carving, drilling, and sanding, I came out with this-

The stem is a piece of Madrone, it started as 1" piece, then I drilled a hole through the middle of it, and carved out the stem. The bowl is a piece of Madrone burl, its very hard. I rubbed the wood with a non-toxic chopping block oil, and the bowl piece especially turned out nice. The smoke is surprisingly clean, and quite cool due to the long stem.

Next, I have some good news! And a little bad news(not that bad).

The good news is I may be getting medical provider status for a local patient. I'd be growing in a greenhouse, on his property(its nearby). He is a relative of a close friend, he recently moved to the area to retire close to family. He is veteran, and sustained injuries that have plagued him for decades, he is moving from a non-medical state and can't wait to get started.
He wants to do a greenhouse, and I agree, he is far back in the hills where it won't be visible, so it won't be a liability. He plans on traveling a lot year round, especially in the summer. I'll be given a key to come and go as needed. Essentially I'll be the gardener, more for his convenience than anything.

The bad news is I'll probably need to stop guerrilla growing, It would be bad to get caught growing illegally while I'm acting as a caregiver, and to tell the truth, I'd probably prefer growing in a cushy Green house.

I've shown him ICmag, and what I've done, but he doesn't seem too keen on me documenting his grow. I've explained that there would be no possible way for him to get caught, and its not likely they'd even try with Obama in office.

I believe I'll probably try using Earth boxes in the greenhouses, if I'm able to post the grows, I'd be able to continue my Earth hole/ Earth box experimentation.

At any rate, whatever happens I'll be around in the same capacity, just maybe not as many grow pics.

Some of my wife's family lives in Oregon, and they love the place. Her uncle lives here for now, but he wants to go back... Been thinking of moving there especially if cannabis becomes legalized there...

Cannabis needs to be legalized at least for medicinal use urgently! There are so many people, including my grandma, who are stuck on these medications that make things worse... They create more problems than they solve.. I have talked with her about the medical cannabis I grow, and I asked her if she wanted to try some to see if it helped some of her problems. I made sure she knew she didn't have to smoke it but just cook it into something... She never did use it, becase of the law... She actually called my mom after a few days telling her I tried to push drugs on her...

Our state is now almost surrounded by medicinal states (3/4)... Trying to get my friends and family on the push to get at least somewhat active... Its like pulling teeth most of the time...

i have a question..i usually use pots t grow but this year im thinking about digging holes ..How big do my holes need to by as far as the length and depth..im planning on growing relatively large plants

1 1/2 - 2 feet wide x 2 feet deep should be more than suffice, depending on your soil conditions and how big you want your plants to grow.

You can get a two-three foot skinny girl in one beer size dixie cup (who desperately needs a transplant). So, figure that in with a 4 ft³ hole == bad ass. I was watching a film by Brown Dirt Warrior the other day, and he used about that size of a hole, about two-three feet deep and the width of a garbage bag (two feet), His plants we're fairly massive by my concerns. I'd say they were half pound yeilders. 3 foot long buds. MMM.

Well, I really do regret the fact I've gotta drop out of the guerrilla status, the challenge was fun, and I loved sharing it with everyone, good or bad. At this point in my life, doing the guerrilla thing is getting more and more difficult, mostly due to the fact more and more properties are becoming inhabited, all the nice spots near a creek or other source of water are now well traveled areas, I'm getting pushed up and further out, making visits more difficult. The needed equipment list is getting larger, each plant requires several trips just to haul its requirements.
Also, as a family man now, I'm finding that the risks I was willing to take as a single man are very scary now, I don't want to miss one day in prison away from my family. Becoming a medical provider takes out all the risk, stress, and the tons of labor each guerrilla plant needs. Growing becomes a pleasure, basic problems like mold and pests become easier to treat, I'm free to concentrate on the quality and quantity of bud, rather than just keeping the plants alive.

One thing I will say is that I have accomplished the central goal I've had during my entire online guerrilla ''career'', that being to develop a super reliable irrigation system for small time guerrilla growers in tough dry climates. My plan was to continue developing and promoting the Earth hole and Earth boxes, by growing in them and posting it, I regret that I may not be able to, but you never know.

But no one should think I'm quitting ICmag, I should still be around.
