^^ I heard that a lot.

I immagine that the government is making more effort to ensure the tourists safety. Must be the biggest source of income. :chin:

the 80's was indeed a scary time in Amsterdam ,but since they got rid off most the heroin users it seems a lot safer ,,u dont see people injecting on the streets much now adays ,,theyre all on crack now lol

Yes, it is. The thing is, they're making the city "nicer" for tourists by cleaning up the sex and Cannabis industry... which is one of the main reasons so many tourists come to Amsterdam in the first place.

I hope they won't do to Amsterdam what New York did to Times Square and 42nd street.

and that is?

In the 70's and 80's, Times Square and 42nd street were full of Porn shops, X rated theatres, pawn shops and other kinds of alternative 'commercial activity' that the mayor though wasn't representable for the image of the city. They cleaned up the whole area by rasining the rents tenfold, so that only rich and respectable businesses could afford it.
Today, Times Square and 42nd street are but commercial shopping centres, no different from any other shopping centre in the world. Virgin megastores, GAP, MacDonald's, StarBucks, you know, the usual stuff.

Sorry mate, just had to add what you forgot.

Times Square is not Boring. Its noisy, extremely crowded, bright, busy, costly. Exciting, especially if you are going to see one of the shows.
I personally hated the place and wanted to run away. Its very hard to walk casually through Times square. Just too crowded.
And yes its full of those megastores. All also crowded and horrid.

Yeah dude, stand up for yourself. I bet you can land yourself a better job.

.

With the way you write You should look at reporting or something like that.
Ok, your punctuation is not so good, but you express yourself very well. And I really enjoyed your account.

They better not be cleaning up amsterdam in any way other than sweeping the streets and removing the graffiti......

I like the whole weed/sex thing they have goin' on. Very unique and exciting to people who go there for the first time.

Yeah my father moved from england to america and the first place he stopped was 42nd street...he said it was rediculous how much it has changed since the 80s..or maybe 70s when he was there..I really hope they dont change to much more with amsterdam...tourists will stop coming ..it doesnt make sense why they would fix something that isnt broken? I hear it was going through lots of changes in the last few years so thats why i hurried up and went there before they started outlawing cannabis and alcohol in the same place. I gave the dealer dude my weed because he was so close to getting busted...it doesnt matter who you are everyone can relate to that almost busted feeling and i had to get rid of my weed before i left anyway...I gave the rest of my bud away to some lady at a headshop...

ANYWAY

Do the locals want to get rid of the coffeeshops and red light areas? Or is it just the surrounding governments? I hear they are pressured a lot by US and UK? I couldnt see holland wanting to get rid of them if most of their money comes from tourists.

Thank you Ronley! That's quite the compliment. I wasn't really paying attention to my punctuation when I posted. My punctuation's fine when it needs to be. :) I'm glad you enjoyed my story. I have a considerably longer account of my trip to the 'Dam on here somewhere.
