There are several million Mayans still alive.
Not sure how many of them can "see the future"...

I'm sorry guys, but absolutely nothing will change in 2012. You'll still be who you are, and those of you bitter at life will still feel bitter; those of you who enjoy life will enjoy it as well. Unless you do some changing personally... ;-)

They said the same thing for year 2000. And I'm sure they said the same thing some time before that. Every few years, some new mythology will come along and people will put all their hopes in an arbitrary year where "everything will change" - good or bad...

Well one thing is for certain... even if Bush conquers the Middle East, if there is a nuclear fallout, if the economy collapses and the stocks crash, or if the housing market flops, the cure for AIDS comes out, a new auto technology comes out, you name it...

As far as you and I are concerned, things haven't changed.

In my opinion, these "apocalypse" dates only allow people to buy time and take a "time out" from life until they realize that nothing is going to happen at 2012, then they will invent a new year to procrastinate until.

Why should that New Year's Eve be different than any others? I was going to invite you, oh well.

How do you know that?

And that shit from 2000 is way off from what this is about...

What is this about?

How do I know... because things never "change"... I mean, things will always change, but people will never notice changes. Their perception continuously adapts to the external - the only way for most people to feel a change is if they change their internal outlook on things.

Don't take my word for it. When's the last time you noticed a miraculous "change" that significantly affected your life in some way?

And I think this thread does relate to the year 2000 because there is some mythological significance to 2012...

I don;t believe in doomsday scenarios. I think nature has it's own "cutoff switch" that prevents total extinction. I still don;t think I'm ever going to die. Not now, not in 2012. I'm going to be here for a long, long time.

Anyone pillaging then would be an idiot. You should pillage on December 20, 2012 (the calender ends on the winter solstice).

I had a relative lose his house and his small business over Y2K. Even though it was really his fault. I feel kinda sorry for him. He would have had alot more fun losing it thru gambling or other vices. Instead of just being paranoid all the time.

Thanks for the heads-up Jack DR. Hell, that shows you how much I know about all this crap.

What ever the exact date this is all to take place, I just hope everyone remembers to rape & pillage before they burn the village.

So basically, if a bunch of bullshit sources agree on bullshit, the shit's still about to go down, eh? Great logic.

um, i'm surprised no one has mentioned Peak Oil . Global oil production has peaked, and between now and 2012, we'll see the price of oil and natural gas go up up up, affecting the price of everything and very possibly causing a civilizational collapse once oil supplies go into permanent decline and shortages become widespread (civilization as we know it is based on cheap oil and gas, and totally unprepared for expensive or unavailable oil/gas). Totally possible that barter will be the only form of commerce in the not-so-distant future, as money wont be worth the paper it is printed on. However, those of us that know how to grow killer herbs will have the ultimate tradable commodity, so not to worry! If you work in marketing, pr, advertising, or some similar useless biz, worry a lot... Get your outdoor chops up, cuz who know how long the grid and the public water supply will stay regular...

Only oil prices aren't going to peak anywhere before 2012. It's going to go up and up and up and up... Meanwhile people are trying to use biodeisel... Only when people find out the energy it takes to raise these animals and plants probably cost more than the produce.

Plus, there will be serious ethics issues in trying to farm these animals to satisfy the demand.

In the end, I think the only real long term possibilities are wind or solar.
