anyone use "flir mask"?

944s2,

I re-read your original first post. It seems like you already have the Flir mask material and will be hanging it, regardless. You were just looking for others with actual experience using the same material. I kind of think you won't find that here, at least not from the contributions so far. I guess that makes you the pioneer, please let us know how it works for you.

How will you test it? Just stand outside and look inside to see if you have any leaks? Any idea on how to see like a FLIR camera does?

If you are blocking windows with Flir mask, do the windows still open? If so, would it help the IR emissions if you leave each window open a small crack to allow natural air flow between the glass and material? It might help reduce temperature differences in the surfaces that will be visible on FLIR. Does Leo really use FLIR in your area, or are you just extra cautious?

If you have an A/C unit and you are in a residential location in Essex, isn't just the fact that you need an A/C unit a big hint that you are burning shitloads of power with something inside? I thought A/C owned by private individuals was rather unusual in the UK. Will your neighbors notice the noise? I live in the American South and I have a two 3 ton A/C units, as do all my neighbors. The sound is definitely distinct and noticeable in neighboring properties. I can hear theirs, they can hear mine. You can hear a running compressor when walking or driving down the street if your car windows are open. No big surprise where I live, but would that be considered unusual in your neighborhood?

Prodex is foil/foam/foil, not foil. Where's the 5 1/2" gap you mentioned? I'm in a hot climate, and most of the heat is coming from the roof. The XPS is twice a thick with half the R value. What about heat going thru and out the roof and walls when heating the room.? -granger

they illustrate an 8 cavity between the purlins. they are specing an r13 batt which is 3.5" in diameter. this leaves a cavity of 5.5 inches behind the prodex.

i usually refer to prodex as a foil because the foam is so thin it might as well just be a foil.

xps is twice as thick yes. but its real insulation. it does not depend on very hot sunny weather to achieve a high r value. you get that r value pretty much all the time provided its installed correctly. polyiso boards loose some r value over time as they break down and off gass water vapor but they still hold around 4 per inch i believe.

you cannot achieve any appreciable r value with such a thin material... there IS some aerogel insulations you can get, but they are hideously expensive.

if you live in the hot humid south... just do r15 in 2x4 24oc construction with 1 inch of foam cladding taped and sealed ontop of OSB. this whole assembly is like 5.25-5.75 inches thick with siding. r19 theoretical.

im not shure what you mean about heat escaping through the wall and roof from the inside.thats what air barriers and insulation are there to prevent.

Yes that's what they are there to prevent, but none of them prevent it completely. I have R-38 in the attic of my house, and on cold mornings my entire roof has a layer of frost, while all my neighbors have frost on their rooves only above the overhang. Warmth is being held in the living space in my house with much less escaping than in my neighbors' houses.

yea, thats exactly what you want.

in the north... a roof like your neighbors would be catestrophic, with ice damns forming...

grats on having a reasonable home... im working towards getting my moms place to where yours is... new pex, duct, soffit/fascia has to come first though.
