Well, it is an amazing plant,.... and after all the effects that we so love are intended to be a defense mechanism! ;)

When ever my forearms get a lot of contact with the buds, they get very irritated. They become very itchy and get blotchy red marks all over them.

I also have to say the smell of a large quantity of units can be quite nauseating if your are in a room with them for an extended period of time.

This happends to me...only on my forearms

i get itchy from contact always but only certain strains like afghans make me sniffly & very sneezey when trimming & drying....i have a lot of food allergies so i wonder if its connected to that.

hmm, interesting... though a very lot of these so-called "allergic reactions" looks a very lot, not to say they mirror it, like reactions to cystolithic hairs. just like porcupine can throw its spine at you, just like tarantula spiders can throw their hair-like setae at you, then your beloved plant can do the very same, by "throwing" at you their cystolithic hair, tiny-tiny hair like stuff made of carbonate calcium (just like 'em snails & sea shells, hard stuff...), kinda microscopic glass shards which are used as a defence mechanism. Now, I'm not saying that all cases of allergic reactions are due to these hairs, but it wouldn't come as a surprise if most of them are.

Now, to those to whom this happens, I can't help to suggest a question to ask yourself; why the hell would plants feel the need to defend themselves against the very hand that feed them ?

I've been really surprised by the results from this poll ... I didn't expect so many people had allergic reactions during trimming... after 100+ votes it seems only 1/4 of us get to enjoy trimming with zero allergic affects, but most of us have at least mild reactions

Anyway, allergies shmallergies... it's not gonna stop us growing :))

Generally dry trimming has been the lazyman's approach which then leads to a sneezing/major nose drippage -- like hanging down 6 inch out of me nose only sustained during the process!
For the first time in ages I tried wet trimming: even with carbon filter running fairly close by: major headache for 1-2 days plus itchy allergy symptoms still not gone away! Why the wet worse than the dry?

That's a bit different! :( ... can you elaborate on that please?

Not that not tonight kinda headache . Whenever i do some bud/plant trimming it brings on a real bad case for her every time , she reckons it the smell of the bud that causes it , i dunno .

Indeed ! I entered my vote and was quite surprised at the high ratio of people experiencing reactions, and the different ratios make me even more sure that most part of these reactions are due to cystolith. It's a defence mechanism, not sure it's relevant to tak about "allergy" here.
I know that in Islamabad, Pakistan, they have seasonnal allergy epidemics but it is due to the cannabis pollen filling the air (the city is actually packed with wild plants, growing even around embassies).

When we are taking the plants down I have to wear long sleeves and after they are hung I head straight to the shower. Trimming not a problem just having the branches rubbing against my arms. If I didn't shower my arms would redden up, have a slight burning sensation and itch.
If I were a cannabis plant, I would want a defense mechanism like cystolithic hairs. You betcha!

Anyone that's sensitive to the itchyness in the skin...

Have you noticed any strains/phenos that are particularly bad for you?

I've done a lot of trimming. I sometimes get a runny nose when I'm dry trimming. Any wet weed I rub on will give me a minor not too itch rash on my skin. But overall I've seen reactions from other's across the board, none at all too severe allergic reactions warenting a trip to the doctor's!

But the latest and greatest in reactions for me is from powdery mildew(pm). Trimming weed that had any pm on it during flower will puff up white cloudy dust when you dry trim. I always recommend a mask! For me, it takes a couple days to see the reaction. I get a sore throat and a weekend immune system. Time for the echinacea and yerba santa.

Yes. It sucks that there's weed out there with pm and people are processing it for folks to smoke it. But it's a reality.

Any one else experienced problems from trimming weed with pm?

I get itchy and sniffly, I have a friend who breaks out in hives if he takes dabs or works with plants in direct contact during flower.
