I use rockwool cubes and would like to attempt this method with a couple of my Heri phenos. Can I go straight from my one inch cube to a pot with hydroton or do I have to progress pot sizes as it shows in the write up ? It would be cheaper and easier to go straight to its final pot ??

high man, there are a couple reasons you're not getting the attention you
need. ...first, this is an old thread so the original poster may no longer be
paying attention. ...second, you'll notice that this thread was originally
posted to teach people how to care for mothers in dirt, hence no need for
rockwool or hydroton.

anyway, in my very limited hydro experience, once you have a root system
growing into the hydroton, you'll not be able to re-pot into a larger pot, so
just pot up into your final pots.

btw, make sure you completely bury the rockwool beneath the hydroton or
you run the risk of mold on the exposed rockwool which could lead to stem
rot.

good luck!

How long does it take to get to the poin that its formed and all that it needs is to fatten up and thicken out ????? In other words hitting the low maintenance point ?

hey man, you should probably start here and actually read the thread!

you won't find many willing to give you the simple answers to questions
that show you haven't bothered to try and learn anything, you're just
asking questions!

should we all learn everything so we can be here to answer your questions?

...or should you maybe be responsible for doing some of the research yourself?

read the thread grasshopper, make the effort to learn enough to maybe
answer a question once in a while instead of expecting easy answers to
all your questions.

It takes few months.
Frequent cuttings and LST make her leaves smaller until she become bonsai.
Some of my bonsai moms lived a year+ and meet sudden death because of root rot.
Later I started roots sanation +trimming to prevent this.
IMO air-pruning pots may be good for bonsai moms.
I'm going to repot this MapleLeaf mom into DIY "superroots" bag to give up a root trimming.

Now I'm a lil scared to ask my question, but I can't seem to find it anywhere, maybe its a stupid question. BUT The thread search function always links me to a page without the post it searches for, wtf so sorry if this has been covered?

What's everyone's preferred growing cycle for bonsai moms? 24/0? 18/6? ...?

Thanks!

I am attempting another round of bonsais. I found that not all strains will perform well under these conditions.

My SOL BLuebonic, and all of my Dj strains have a tendancy to autoflower when the plant gets rootbound. I had to drop those from the bonsai list. I would recommend that you keep another cut just in case this happens.

Oh, putting the plants into a larger pot instantly fixed the preflower problem. They just grew right out of it.

I have the exact same problem with my blubonic. I'm still able to clone just fine from the cuts I take from her though.

Hey there!

I prefer to keep moms at 18/6 under 6500K (60W CFL and up recommended, at no more than 6" from tops to avoid stretching).

24/0 seems to stress them and make for less than healthy cuttings.

Hope this helps and many blessings to your garden!

I agree 18/6 seems to be what they prefer.
I have always thought plants needed some time in the dark. It is not natural to have 24 hours of light.

Just my :2cents:!

Bonsai moms can be maintained for years with proper care: fed lightly, roots trimmed, and growth trimmed back as needed.

You can take off the fan leaf if it's yellow, but if they are healthy I wouldn't, they are kinda vital to growth. You will find that if you trim it like the original pic in this thread and keep the pot size small then your leaves in general will be alot smaller anyway.
