You watch Bill O'Reilly, your blood pressure goes up. You can't explain that! LOL

When I moved here to the south I was completely culture shocked. The first time someone said to me, "It's not good to open your mind, the devil can get in" my jaw literally dropped. I asked her, "Well, what if he's trapped inside there and can't get out?" I'm lucky I didn't get shot.

Wow! We're agreeing on things.

:)

It's kinda nice, ya'll...

I have to believe that O'Reilly is as much a character as Stephen Colbert. Colbert's character is an OPEN parody of O'Reilly's character.

O'Reilly can't possibly be as dumb as to really believe that "tide goes in, tide goes out" is a good answer for anything. It's his way of playing to his base, which unfortunately, eats crap like that up.

I agree that he's playing to his base, and that he's not quite stupid enough to believe that the tides can't be explained. But I do think he's every bit the angry white guy. His frequent rages at people who dare to talk about things that are true are pretty self-explanatory.

Well, you had to, didn't you Harry :D

I'm talking about the Observer/Watcher in you, outside your mind. I guess my view leans to a twist of idealism.

Consciousness is aware of itself as an experience between itself and the environment in which it exists, it is a ‘self-awareness’ having the capacity for understanding, but.. the understanding of, and organization of, information acquired through awareness, inwardly from or outwardly from the perspective that is conscious, that understanding and organization are elements of intelligence.. intelligence, like awareness, is an inherent attribute of consciousness, and the inherent attributes of awareness and intelligence may be dormant or active without negating the experience that informs consciousness of its existence..

Scientists are interested in what makes up consciousness.

Dogs and all animals are also conscious on a slightly simpler level of concrete thinking.

We all change states of consciousness and sleep is one state, awake is another.

What interests me is the subconscious mind that we know is there. Out of body experiences are like witnessing a UFO. Has anyone here ever left their body?

When this happens people may think that they are god. Called the messiah complex we seem to have a common form of insanity. Crazy people often think they are Jesus but this is different.

I was a fifteen year old yogi myself meditating daily and achieving deep levels of meditation. I discovered that MDMD increased my focus and perhaps my intelligence. So I took two hits one night and went home to meditate.

I was lucky to get out of body and you need to be in the third and deepest state of meditation. Once there with no feeling it was like a maze in my head backing up and turning and then it happened.

I flipped out some would say...I saw and knew much and I doubted it could all be true so I proved I could do anything in my mind. I felt and saw a light and I stepped into it and it was powerful. The feeling was ecstasy and love .

Maybe I just flipped out. Sure was a great trip. Never had another like it.

It's usually religious people who equate science with a religion. (Bomb likes to call it "scientism")

This is a false analogy. We have been told many things by science that have later been disproven - BY SCIENCE.

The church told us 2,000 years ago that Jesus was born of a virgin. 2,000 years later? They're sticking with that lie.

That's the advantage of science. Science makes observations about reality, develops a hypothesis and then subjects that hypothesis to rigorous testing. Results are published and others attempt to replicate the results independently. Independent confirmation bolsters the results and we move forward. When new data comes up that invalidates part of a theory - the theory is revised to include the new data!

Science never claims to have the ultimate truth. Science is only a method that allows us to refine every closer to that truth.

RELIGION claims to have all the answers. Science proposes the best answers we have based on our current level of understanding.

To think of it as a new religion is to completely misunderstand it.

Anti Pro Darwin, what are u talking about? I never called Science a Religion, if I did, quote me.

Science is Science and Religion is Religion, each have their own usefulness and uniqueness. The two are not interchangeable however, and their function differs greatly in nature.

also, Dogma of Religious Institutions is to Religion what Scientism is to Science.

lets also make another analogy: Michael Cremo is to Archeology what Dawkins is to Science.

The answers that Science provides through the observation of the function of the natural world are very important, and such observation is based on discovering how the mechanism of nature function, of what substances are they made, etc... That's actual Science.

Science doesn't ask things like: Why is there Something instead of Nothing?

Science asks things like: How do we construct super efficient habitable buildings and what are the best materials to do so?

etc...

Religion and Science are not mutually exclusive things, provided we first have a solid understanding of what they are of course. if we don't, well, we'll be prone to make obviously poorly informed rants.

later gator.

Even religions have their methods for finding the truth. You can't just come up with new shit in Buddhism. They argue it all out logically and it is pretty scientific in thinking actually the powers of deduction like Sherlock.

Even screwballs like the Catholics change their doctrine from time to time just like science.

I know science is a good method but realize that it is just another human system like the other religions and while it may be a bit more true the truth is still out there and I don't know if studying science or Buddhism best finds it for you.

Choose your poison...

Bog, can you give us a definition of Religion in your own words?

are you able to separate the various religious dogmas from religion in and of itself?

Ah pretty clever, establish and maintain a thread on UFO's and then once every mod is used to seeing it as a thread on UFO's switch the topic to Science vs Religion, pretty clever for a bunch of stoners. :)

U

unthing

what was that thing called that had it's evil tentacles wrapped around both science and religion?

oh yeah, philosophy.

actually, it is lack of Philosophy within Science and Religion that has caused the obvious fall in quality in both.

lets not even get started with Art in that regards...

or Politics...

peace!

there's no such debate of Science vs. Religion.

it is only a phenomenon in non-academic pop-culture circles, to put it lightly.

maybe you can quantify science like that but not religion.

they are opposites imo.

wrong.

but don't let me, an faceless poster in a growing forum tell you that.

research on your own, you may start with a nice book called:

The Beginnings of Western Science Tradition in Philosophical, Religious and Institutional Context by David Lindberg

Unless you live in Texas....
Yes, I know I've said this already.

Well, it's not so much a debate as scientists showing the best evidence, and religion putting it's fingers in it's ears and going "La la la, I can't hear you"
