Oh Noooo. Guess what? I saw those bags the other day and picked one up to blow through it just to see if it might be suitable. It's a sign!

Thanks for the input Arobskittle

Calm down folks they are just pots if somebody wants to believe something on here and give it a try no need to bash them if they found they worked well.. Thanks for the Wal Mart bag trick...

I agree!! No need to get so serious that you guys start name calling. Everyone has their own way of doing things...

That's the problem sometimes...growers try too much to control the way other growers do things..

Whatever works is all that matters...

P.S. I wouldn't use any Walmart bag either...lol...I went from spending $5000 a year on over priced street Bud to growing my own better quality Bud for a lot cheaper....so spending money on a quality pot is really no big deal..

In fact, before we all started growing, most of us was spending money on over priced street Bud, and now that we are growers we act like spending a few extra bucks will really hurt..lol..go figure..

Suggestions on DIY weed barrier cloth “air-root prune pots”:

Greetings all.

I’m making up some pots from cheap weed barrier cloth and dollar store Poly-Prop laundry style baskets of about 2 gallons capacity.

Question: The single layer of cloth admits a fair amount of light. Would experienced users double this up to make near opaque?

Thanks Everyone.

I think you will be fine with a bit of light shining through. Even though we've all been told roots will die if they get light, that really isn't true. Ive seen a grow journal where someone had their plants in clear tupperware containers and the plants were thriving. Someone at gardenweb also grows their plants in clear containers, and they have never had a problem with light killing the roots.

I believe the reason they are black is to prevent the growth of algae, as they require sunlight to survive.

I've got 15 pepper plants out on my patio in 5 and 7gal Smart Pots and a 25gal Smart Pot with some Russet potatoes. Its my first try with the Smart Pots and I just wanted to familiarize myself with them before I buy 17 of the 3gal for my indoor Organic medicine.

I did mix my organic outdoor pepper soil a touch heavier than past years as I was expecting the soil to dry a little faster in these fabric Smart Pots. I'm glad I did as these peppers are definitely using more water/tea than past years peppers in "dumb" pots.

So far the peppers and potatoes are doing great! Its still May and my peppers are flowering like mid June!
I just cant wait to put 17 girls into these Smart Pots next month!

Just throwing my two cents of experience with the Smart Pots in the mix... last year I used 30 gal pots and got at least 1 lb per plant and over 1.5 lbs on several of the ice creams and opuim strains. This year I'm trying to use several 45 gal pots with the 30 gal just to see if the difference is worth the trouble and soil. Last few years, planting straight in the ground I was lucky to get close to a 3/4 lb.

The dude Charles from Smart Pots is sending me a couple 3 and 5 gallon pots to try out before I spend all that money on them....Dude seems really cool...I just emailed him and asked a few questions about the pots.....He asked me what size was i interested in....I told him I wanted 200 gallon pots, but would love to try the 3 and 5 first....So they are in teh mail now...Cool dude...

Im sure I will love them...ive heard great stuff about them. take care.

I'm trying 20 gal sp's indoors for the 1st time. I usually do large beds, 5' x 5' or so with nearly 200 gal in it, so the 20 gal pots seems small :)

In beds I usually get around 3/4 lb / plant with 4 plants under a 1k. I think the sp's will be close, but they are getting to the point where I need to water every other day, where they go 3 or 4 in beds because of all the extra soil...

I've ordered 10, 3 gallon Smart Pots. I plan on growing 2 of the same strain, one in the Smart Pot, one in a regular 3 gal bag and seeing how they differ under the same conditions.

i finally found this thread.. (thanks to those that linked me here)

I haven't read it all yet but luckily i have 6 weeks until my next harvest is done. I may give these a try and likely build a drip system b/c i am getting tired of moving plants to water.

maybe 4 Smart Pots, 4 Air Pots, 4 reg pots.

All 4 gallon size.

A lot more reading to do first.

Where are you guys getting the best selections / pricing?

If that was already addressed never mind. I will find it when i finish this thread tomorrow.

thanks!

I cant read this entire thread to get my questions answered. There is just too much fluff in there. I got to about page 7 and had to give up. So if someone could answer these i would be very appreciative.

- Can these pots be used several times? ive noticed pics where the roots were sticking out so thats why i ask.
- When you water these smart pots does the runoff only come from the bottom or is there drainage from the sides? Is the pot basically a liner that needs to be placed into another pot or some sort of rubbermaid when growing indoors?
- How rigid and sturdy are the smart pots? Can they be hauled from room to room even when wet continuously and stay in tacked?
- Do you really have to water much more often?

Yea I am especially curious about the last question.

Do you really have to water much more often?

I selected my moms because they veg slow, giving me plenty of time to finish up a flower cycle while the clones veg out.

I prefer strains that don't get too thirsty in case I have to leave home for the weekend.

Last thing I would need is a container that requires my presence at lights on and off everyday.

I've used my SmartPots 3 times now...just washed them in a washing machine and air dried them before hand. Though, roots don't grow out the sides of mine...they die back because of the light hitting the outside of the pot. So I don't have that problem.

I never water them so that they drench the outsides or bottom of the pot, so that's not a problem for me either. Though if I did, it would come out wherever was convenient for the water, including the sides. I use them solo, I don't put them in anything (though if I accidentally overwater, putting a towel underneath them for a few hours works).

They aren't very rigid, but they hold their own if you fill them with enough soil and pack it to the proper consistency...especially when wet. I move mine in and out of my cab when I water and they're good.

I don't think so...I also use Airpots, and the only difference in watering is the size of the container.

Great thread Thunder!

Much respect to all the contributors!

I'm a hydro-grower (check my sig for current grow) but, I'm in a situation where I plan to keep 4-6 mothers in a DR120 tent (4'x4'). But since they're going to be mothers and I want them movable I can't use the system I'm used to, NFT.

So my local grow-shop-guy really digs these air-pots, and even tho I respect his opinion, I've wasted to much money already on hyped-up shit that doesn't hold promises.

Anyway, found this thread and they really sound like what I need.

I was thinking about DWC or RDWC, but I don't know if they're good for keeping mothers?

Soil is never gonna happen, did it once and I'm never going back, no offense to soil-growers tho - to each his own.

Done coco as well, better than soil but I wasn't impressed. However, and this goes for soil too, it might have been the driver that was lacking in skills, not the medium. :D

Anyway, what's the way to go? Are there alternatives to soil and coco for the air-pots?

Should I hand-water or convert my NFT-system to a drip-system?

Thanks guys!

Cheers

This is my first grow and I'm using 4, 1.5 gallon airpots and it seems like I'm watering alot. I'm two weeks into flower and i'm watering almost every day. Is this because the pots are too small or is this the way it is with airpots. As I said this is my first grow so I know over watering is a big problem so I bought a moister meter just to make sure and when I wait too long you can tell they need water.

Thanks for all help

Thundurkel as I said this is my very FIRST attempt at growing. I dont know what any of that means. coco? H&G Aqua Flakes? is that some kind of soil? I'm using fox farm ocean forest soil. I thought that would be easiest. Is this much watering normal for soil or is it because the airpots
