Air Layering-- with pics.

Hey Big Mike!...

I did this just as an experiment, I still clone the old fashion way.

this wont cause any stress.. ?

Probably some stress.

does the vertical growth stop?

Yes, vertical growth stops until upper plant has enough roots to maintain the size of the cutting.

do the bottom arms of the plant start to branch out more, because it has a new 'top'.. ?

Hell yeah!, the bottom branches go crazy!...

If you have a big mother plant and not enough space to keep clones you could air layer many branches at the same time and root them right there. But if you have space for cloning then it´s not very useful.

you use rockwool and probably anything that can hold up. ive seen an article in hightimes grow about this before and the guy used rockwool. he was a medical patient and he used air layering so he would never go over his plant limit. he would harvest 1 plant then plant a huge 2FT brach that had been air layered.

This technique is also useful if a plant has gotten too tall. Just airlayer and when you cut it lose, you have two plants and you have reduced the height of the 1st one.

What would happen if you started feeding those roots developed from an air layer? For instance, you LST'd a plant, air layered near the tip (if possible), then planted that rooted end into another container?

Like this:

That would be one freak of a setup.

Clowntown, I was just about to ask that. I'm interested in that also and I've been thinking this for the last year. Also a long cutting from some stretchy strain that would be cut from both ends creating 2 roots has been circling in my mind. Have to try that someday.

then you could avoid some of those problems that happen when you mix certian AN nutes no more little gellies

great thread I have been doing an air layering project for the last week or so too.

Clowntown the technique you're describing is called Soil Layering, (where you just bend the top into the ground and force it to root then cut it in half) and then you got serpentine layering where the stem goes under and back up on top of the soil a few times to create several new rooting locations. This info is all coming from the book "Marijuana Botany"By Robert Connell Clarke (GREAT book and every marijuana gardener should own it, It came out in 1981, but its a timeless book) he does a nice write-up on the topic, with some great pictures. He also has some great info on Air Layering and grafting too. Peace_highst

Nice thread panama man!

I've seen this done with outdoor trees and shrubs but never thought of weed.

Lee Valley has a kit pretty cheap- http://www.leevalley.com/garden/page.aspx?c=1&cat=2,47236&p=46938

Heady Pete thanks for the heads up (no pun intended) on that product and where to get it, very big help.

I see the only down side being that it would only work for larger stems. It would be neat to make a smaller if there isnt one already available.Peace_highst

No probs DJ. Glad to help. This unit looks like it can clamp on some pretty small stems. Check ou the black top cover and the size of the hole there. It looks like it spreads to accommodate different sized branches. If fit was too big, just stuff some sphagnum moss around the stem at top and bottom to fill any gap and you should be gold. The other nice thing is the black light blocking labels that help your roots grow.

The best part is you get 5 of these cups for about 10 bucks! Skip the hormone, but get the syringe and you are good to go!

Ya I like that you get 5 cups, cloning gel and the other accessories too. You're right it could fit on most size stems, but could they supprt the extra weight, that was more what I meant, but I guess you could easily stake it up or something. I am going to buy a set ASAP. peace_highst

Cool let us know how it works.

I don't think it would be any heavier than a good cola altough the stem would be thicker when the cola is big, but I think you are right when you say you can stake it or support it easily enough.

Cheers!

I know it may not be practical, but if someone could do this and have 1 plant fill 2 separate 5 gallon buckets in a hydro grow that would be awesome. Could you get the plant to yield double what it would have if it had just occupied 1 bucket? Would this count as 2 plants in leo's eyes? Would it ever be worth the obvious extra vegative time?

nice technique panamajuice thanks for sharing. I wonder if rockwool would work ok. It compresses a lot and may not hold much moisture under those conditions...being wrapped up like that...perhaps just more frequent damping needed.... would be lighter

I like the idea of just planting the new rooted section..I wonder how much more plant would come from it... shit I'd be prepared to have a go if I had some slack but I dont ATM

great thread, peace
