the only problem with this is that the vast majority of the indians that went to SA during this time were from rajasthan and gujarat, which are MILES away from kerala

Actually a sizeable proportion of Indian migrants was from Tamil Nadu, which borders Kerala, and there even were Pashtun people from NWFP.
Whatever, ganja had reached South Africa long before the 19th century Indian migrants., through the Portuguese sailors, and even before that through the Arab traders.

cool mriko!!

the indian debate is mainly whether it (the indian genetics) had an effect on the definite difference of Durban Poison, when compared to the more similar swazi and transkei varieties... i'm pretty sure the main influx of weed was with the bantu tribes, though...

there's postulations that escaped egyptian slaves in ethiopia, circa 650bc, took seeds to the cape!! dunno if they would have gotten them to the 'kei/durbs/swazi areas, though...

funny that the ganja growing areas follow the path of the bantu... down the coast into natal via swazi, and then the xhosa broke off from the zulu and moved into teh transkei/ciskei areas, and BINGO it becomes the biggest ganja farming area in the land!! all the while the zulu stay in the kwazulu areaand the the whities arrive and stop the xhosa from expanding their kingdom and the ganja growing area doesn't grow either!!

lol, who knows??

irie, indeed

What an informative thread! I'm going to have a few weeks to kill in Botswana later this month, and aside from the usual hiking and general exploring, I'm hoping to come across some ganja. It'd be fun to take home some seeds....

Any advice for a traveller in the area? I've been through Northern Africa a bunch, but never this far south.

^^ looks like a swazi to me! fattish leaves thinning out as the plant stretches and flowers...

interesting... the only problem with this is that the vast majority of the indians that went to SA during this time were from rajasthan and gujarat, which are MILES away from kerala... who knows!! maybe a rajasthani took his keralan family along, and they brought a sack of seeds... ;)

edit: flying to cape town on monday!

Thanks for the info. Here's a bad picture of a rooibaard I grew some time ago. The shape was very different but the high had something in common.

Heres Ciskei bushman's for comparison too. Obviously the diversity in S.A is huge.

What I find interesting is the pink pistils on some Durban Poisons I've seen over the net. Mriko, have you bumped into pink pistils anywhere on the old continent? I know they exist in nortern India, that got me speculating the the origins of Durban Poison..

Here's an african lady my friend is growing. Any suggestions what it might be? All that is known about it is that it comes from Africa, and they called it African bushweed. I'm thinking South African. Ever seen anything like this?[/quote]

those are some of the longest pistils I've seen...let us know how they turn out:smokeit:

Here is some Super Silver Malawi (SSH X Malawi Gold [African Seeds])

only the back cola is in focus...you can see though this plant retains most of the structure of SSH...the Malawi male was delicate and sparse...nice smell on the stem however: woodsey/floral type

the female was nice and lemony...this plant's stem had the same smell as the Malawi stem, the buds smelled like a typical haze hybrid (weird that the stem and buds were fairly distinct)

the smoke reminds me of Orange Pekoe Tea (taste)...effect is super clear with no anxiety...just dried and without a cure, it is my favorite I find myself reaching for repeatedly...very potent:smokeit:

the way things turned out with only this African male in the cross was fortuitous...I had planned for several other varieties as combinations...but due to a multitude of issues, this was all that proved decent

the plant was taken at about 135 days from seed (no veg. period)...13/11 period to start under larger plant's canopy (shaded and slower growth as a result)....yield was slightly under an ounce: 2 colas of 30 cm each

did not intend for production initially...pressed it into service...I'm glad I did:smokeit:

previewed the post and the picture is lousy...I will plan to post a better image later

all the best, s.

This looks very similar to a plant I have from seeds picked out of some exceptional imported that turned up a couple of years ago in the UK. Most of the African import that hits the UK comes from West Africa (Gambia, Ghana) or South Africa.

Thing is, both West and South African cannabis populations are massively varied and diverse. I grew a west African from buds I got in an Amsterdam coffeeshop that grew like an indica, and the Nigerian I have grown in the past was quite indica leaning too, but I have also grown Jahwi's Joy from Ghana and that is as extreme a sativa as I think exists.

So like South Africa, there is tremendous genetic variation in West Africa too, think how much trade passed through these two places in the last few centuries. Much of the cannabis of the carribean and central/south america probably descends from west african sources due to the slave trade.

Personally,I think Africa is the last undiscovered continent in terms of cannabis genetics as in other places like Thailand, Mexico and Jamiaca the indigenous genes are wiped out or hybridised. I think if we are looking for pure landraces these days, Africa is the place. Personally, I have two plants from the exceptional import I mentioned, plus all 8 of the seeds I collected from some lovely Durtban Poison I bought in Amsterdam have germed, then next up I am gonna run some Ethiopian Highland from African Seeds and some Chiskei Bushmans.

I have been hunting for a proper Durban for a couple of years with no success. The old African Seeds Durban I had didn't germ, the Seedsman Durban, only one germed and it was a male (not a nice one either). Out of 3 packs of Durban x Skunk freebies, 1 germed and it was a hermie. I still have more of the Durban x Skunk freebies though. DP and Sensi Durbans aren't worth the hassle, I grew some Early Durban from Vaaran and they were nice enough but only some vague similarities to Durban really.

The Durban Poison I remember from the 90s was a big yielding plant, huge but airy colas, often pink pistils and would show pink/purple tints on the buds if lacking P or temps dropped, didn't smell much when growing but when dried and cured a couple of months had a beautiful smell, tasted like black licourice with earthy, hashy tones, sometimes a bit like slightly burnt coffee. Potency seemed low at first because the high took a while to build, but was long lasting and could get very psychedelic if you caned loads of it, high ceiling indeed. Not the best tasting or looking weed but the high was lovely, especially for brightening up dull daytimes, and that is what matters for me. Flower time was 12-14 weeks dependant on pheno, indoors in soil.

Best pheno of Durban x Skunk (when the seeds sold as such really were F1s) had all the qualities above but less airy buds and better yield, finished in 11 weeks.

Anyone got any idea where to find a Durban like the one I describe in seed form these days?

Damn, you lucky sod! Many seeds in it? Save em for sure.

Just made me think, with the World Cup in SA, there could be aa worldwide diaspora of SA ganja genes in the next 2 years, I'm sure among all those heading to SA for the world Cup there wlll be a good many stoners (not least the Dutch fans! lol) and a godo deal of SA weed will be toked by them, and the seeds picked out and taken home, so here's hoping this means in the next few years some exotic and special SA sativa lines are preserved and shared for the wider world to enjoy!

had to disagree with your assessment in the "pied" thread...much more agreement here:peppermintstick:

about the slave trade though....I don't think these poor souls were allowed to carry much with them as far as personal items except maybe the clothes on their backs, if that: they were probably exploited first from African rivals then by the slave traders...the Indian 'servants' of the British colonizers in the West Indies probably brought it with them from areas in India

plan on running some more E. Highland too soon...let us know how they go...only made crosses with mine, never smoked it

totally agree with the idea of Africa as a source of future gems since the connections and collection is so difficult...some things were probably missed

though I would not buy Sensi's offerings now, back in the '90's I did buy their 'Durban' and was pleased with a couple of phenos, nice change for me and the mates...quick, powerful Sativa!...a real joy

all the best
