Red and Green

Red and Green

That's how I have the Jaundice f2 (Bogbubble X Chem DD) line divided into two camps. Red and Green.

^ J2 (left) represents the Red and J1 (right) represents the Green. You can see they are different expressions...different coloring..bit different structure. They finish at the same time and smoke out the same. Same flavor..very close on aroma..similar flowers

* These clones are on day 28 and were partially/slightly pollinated with J2s1 pollen...so:

J2 X J2s1

J1 X J2s1

This is the self route to the Jaundice line...bottlenecking it a little bit. Make it easy to germ up a female population that has a good chance of finding desirable traits in its population...even if it's a small population.

^ I cut a 50 day flower off J2s1 yesterday...just to see what an early flower was like. The plant is flushing out quickly..figuring her done mid to late 50's. She's a heavy producer...and hopefully worthy finished product.

* I should also have some J2s2 seeds from this run

Slow Choices

Slow Choices

^ When I selected the seedlings of SZSK f2 (Skunk #1 X Chem DD) to transplant and..therefore...grow

I chose..mostly...the hardier and faster seedlings..but then...I also chose a couple of slower oddball looking seedlings. They came up beside each other in their starter pods..and they came up at the same time..which was...later than the other seedlings selected. I could have just as easy have..chose 2 more hardy looking examples to fill the slots..but decided to gamble

* They are a good deal behind the rest of the population. Can't tell if they are really genetic mutants or if they are stunted and/or hindered in appearance by environmental factors

** I'm not sure they are going to even grow. I gathered them up..however..and found them some space under a 400 MH..see if they respond better.

*** the pictures don't really show too well.. the "bumpy leaf" appearance on the 1st one (on the left..mutant #1)...I have my eye more on that one.

^ That is them. The selections of SZSK f2 and Skunk Jones. The rest of the seedlings were fed to one of my worm populations along with their starter pods.

Skunks. That is where I am. Back to Skunks...though they be my own private versions....the foundations are built on Skunk #1 "The Pure" and a pathway.

* I ran 11 miles my first day back into training (Sunday)...and another 8+ miles yesterday with my wife. The plague has dissipated...finally. My quads are sore as hell..but other than that...the run came right back. Going to get out again today and run off this soreness.

** I'm back to vaping up copious quantities of crumble dry bubble hash. I swear...it seems to help my breathing..or at least...clears out my lungs....and will hopefully numb today's legs up. I'd be just fine if I don't remember the 1st 1/2 of today's session. I'm hobbling tender

Can you explain your methods for selecting seedlings? About how many do you keep?

Can you explain your methods for selecting seedlings? About how many do you keep?

I've done random slayings in the past with larger populations (50 or more)...but in this situation

I selected the biggest, most vigorous, hardiest sprouts for most the population...and a few that just looked different or appealed to me at first glance.

small session then: 14 SZSK and 10 Skunk Jones...something like that. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with this grow. Males or no? Maybe just females?

* It's dumping rain here. Been raining since last night. 30-40 mph winds...temps in the 40's.

Ran bit over 10 miles...slipping and slopping...mucking the miles. Dumped on me the whole time..gusts of wind in the canyons about blew me off my feet. Trails were like creeks...flowing down down...decomposing granite sliding out under every foot fall...guessing at how far I'd slide before I'd catch traction. Slow and hard running. Fun because I didn't pile myself up into a yucca or a cactus or do a header into a boulder patch.

EDIT: February 1st and we have snow. I'll be training in Noble canyon today...run up canyon until I can no longer find the trail. Stupidly forgot to grease the insides of my thighs on yesterday's run...ended up chafing the shit out of myself. In a bit of pain.

More Seedlings

More Seedlings

....on this cold and gray day. Heating up the Lone Peak 2.5's that I ran in yesterday...being that they were so mucked up that they spent last night out on the deck. Thawing them out in front of an oak fire and clunking off the muck. Use them again today.

No rush to get out there. It's not going to warm up...so the snow isn't going anywhere. Fueling up on homemade bread and coffee...hash..eventually get my ass in gear to train. Some days are harder than others to motivate tired bodies. I stretched out for over an hour last night..rubber bands..massage balls...and a foam roller...but that's just to keep going...doesn't take away the overall soreness or tiredness. Been sleeping sound...a huge part of recovery is REM sleep. Got to have it.

So much is endurance and life a mental state...that...I can tell myself I'm ok and not tired and that then becomes reality. It is what you make it. I go through so many highs and lows during training that they have become the norm. Every time I'm in a low/bonking I just acknowledge that I am and that I will eventually get out of it...as long as..I keep concentration and keep running. The most important thing about this sport is to keep progressing forward...whether racing or training. The whip must crack...the hand holding it is your own. My picture of discipline. Hours Months Years repeating tracks...staying the course

..and the bigger picture of riding mountains

^ Typical Skunk Jones (left) and SZSK f2 (right) seedlings. Young and growing on full feed. At this stage...no differences...couldn't pick you out one or the other cross without label reading.

^ Same typical seedlings with the "mutant #1" SZSK f2 now placed in front of them. You can easily see the differences in size. I believe though...that the mutant #1 is...indeed...growing slowly. Interesting plant. See if it grows out of the stunt

The Bottom 4 feet and the Top 1.5 feet...Jaundice

^ That's a grocery bag of J2s1 (Jaundice f2 expression #2 self 1)....cut off the top 1.5' of the plant. Harvest day 54

Jaundice f2 = Bogbubble X Chem DD

^ That's the bottom 4' of the plant. Probably still has between 1/2-1 zip of flowers left on her. Haven't gotten back out there yet to finish the harvest. Most of this stuff goes into the hash bucket.

* She may be too sketchy to work with. As I said before...she showed a lot of intersex down low..way into budding....and she did start making seed down in those parts. Too many seeds...and too late..so most won't even be viable.

I'm not dismayed...but I am cautious. So...tomorrow I'll put into flower a couple clones and try growing her a little differently. I'll lollipop her up and elevate her squares away from the floor heater (I suspect that the floor heater caused her discomfort in this last round)

** I smoked some of those 50 day bud samples I showed the other day. She has...trying to describe this...an artificial melon flavor...like some of those melon flavored candies/gums...which is not overwhelmingly powerful..but subtle and I like it.

The 50 day sample high is relaxing and mellow. Not at all like some of my more hyper stuff. A casual high...not a great motivator...more reflective.

Well...I guess I should trim this thing up while I have a day

For 50

For 50

Starting at 7:00 a.m. tomorrow I'm going to run (generally) within a 5 mile circle..in any direction...of the aid station (my house) and run until 7 p.m.

That's the plan. Begin the decade with a 12hr run on my home trails. Some of the directions I take will be longer than 5 miles out...so I'm doing those first. I don't want to mess with running more than 10 miles between aid station breaks later in the day when I'm starting to get really wasted.

I'll be fueling on hash, tea, canned coconut milk, organic maple syrup, avocado, peanut butter Cliff bars, bananas, sweet potatoes, homemade bread...and whatever else

solo effort. running alone....digging for meditation

hum...yeah...there's some sick hills within that circle. Lot of different terrain too...steep paved hill, fuel breaks, jeep road, truck trail, single track trail. Some of the hills there are no switchbacks...some of the trails are unkept.

It's going to be windy. North winds been blowing steady 15-20 mph with 40-60 mph gusts yesterday and today...and are predicted for tomorrow. Should be last day of them..hopefully they mellow out for me. I can navigate winds by using the canyons but...eventually...I have to head into them.

Didn't run today but I stretched, fed, and I'll get good rest tonight.

...In the years past....my main goals in making seeds were to build a genetic collection, create related pools to work in, and to be independent of any consumer market. Now days....I'm past that point and actually seeing what it is that I've done. The collection is there...the pools are made...and I'm free of markets. I'm my own thing.....sink or swim...

not only have you succeed in that goal you have the best thread on ICMAG.

50th year run

50th year run

Tough one. The winds were hammering all day long....dry and not that warm...although the sun shined in clear skies. Winds were clocking average over 20 mph and gusting 20 mph faster.

The 1st out and back was over 14 miles. It was almost all up and down very steep hills. Lot of time running exposed and jutting ridge line...and sliding down rocky washes. I was satisfied not to have wasted an ankle or have lost any teeth.

Took a 45 minute break after. Made tea..ate salted rice balls...smoked bowls of hash...watered up..grabbed more Clif bars for my pack and recharged my watch.

The 2nd part of the run was a 9+ mile loop...which was more rolling but did include several steep climbs that were longer than a 1/2 mile. I felt pretty good...bit heavy in the legs after all the hills.

After this loop...took another 45 minute break. Did the same exact thing as I did on the first break.

The 3rd part of the run was also a loop. This one went over 8 miles and was run over a lot of steep unkept fuel break....and up and down a very steep rocky wash that extended for a couple miles. This section was brutal on my feet..and my legs were getting gassed out at times. The shadows were growing large by the time I finished...

and by then...it was about 5:00 p.m. and I had been going (except for those long birthday luxury breaks) since 7:00 a.m.

the wind had been beating me up and down the mountains all day

and I was over it. Think I ended up with just under 32 miles.

^ Sexing and transplanting. From the left is a Jaundice f2 and two I-HOP Satellites.

Jaundice = Bogbubble X Chem DD

I-HOP Satellite = S'Creme'N Dawg f2 X Blue Satellite 2.2

* The Jaundice plant falls into the "red" category like J2 and J2s1...I can see already what she'll look like flowered out.

I'll eventually take some clones and grow these things out. In good time. Way happy to get to grow the I-HOP again....been a while

^ Easy Mox Trilogy "Plenty" expression. The two on the ends are being flushed...nearing 70 days. The plant in the middle is a few weeks in. Once the end plants are harvested (soon) I already have their replacements (another 2 Plenty expressions) more than a week into flower and ready to be tied into those spots....and the back perpetual wall of Plenty doesn't skip a beat.

^ Some flower shots of the Plenty plants. She's showing a lot of that haze influence in this round. Last round her flowers didn't look like this and I was able to harvest her at 58 days. This round the clones went way Haze and...like I said above...are still rolling near 70 days. They are spitting some nanners though...and I'm getting tired of them. Probably start harvesting tomorrow.

This version of Easy Mox Trilogy I'm almost positive is fathered by the Purple Bastard Haze.

Easy Mox Trilogy (in this case) = Mox Mox X Purple Bastard Haze f2

Mox Mox = Chem DD X TFlux

TFlux = Original Flo X Chem DD

* The "Haze" in Purple Bastard Haze is the G13/Haze male that Connoisseur used in many of their hybrids. I believe that it is:

G13 (clone) X Haze "C"

The aroma off these plants is wonderfully insane. Stages of Floral over sour fruit funk. Amazing really.

* I see some developing seeds here and there on these plants. It will be an accidental pollination...and the pollen is J2s1. Whatever seeds I can find..I'll save. Lack of deliberation isn't a negative....not here anyways. I'll germ some up one day

** reminder: There are two clones per pot. The pots are 5 gal. The plant int the middle is a single clone in a 1.7 gal square. In the future I'll continue to grow Plenty in the 2 clones per pot method.

*** The Plenty expression is my favorite plant to grow at the moment...in all phases of the game. Her final product is divine. It's a toss up between the Queen Moxie clone and the Plenty clone for me. I love smoking them both...and both are very similar in effects and flavor...aroma has similarities...can tell they are related. But the two clones are also very different...even though they are both flimsy vines..they have different flower structures.

The Queen Moxie has fallen out of favor for winter growing...and I had moments when I thought I could get along without her...but after a lot of meditation on it....

no way. I'd be an idiot to give up that plant. I'm just giving her a rest from the flowering room....although...I did just harvest a Moxie..so I'm not without her flowers. In her winter appearance she is the best Flo I've known...but that also means she shirks on output...making her a low yielding costly expression....even if the bud quality seems even more outstanding this winter. Perhaps...perhaps...I just need a little break off the Moxie. The funny thing about that: I'm setting up a 2 clone per 5 gal pot of Moxie for later this month. Two pots.

<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>><>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Entering a different phase in training. I'm now cutting back on the number of days per week I'm training...but extending distances. I want to save one day out of the week where I run the entire day....just like I did last Saturday. Put in between 30-50 miles in one day and then one or two shorter runs (7-10 miles) during the rest of the week. Pace myself into the spring races.

* Using my house as an aid station allows me to add distance. On some long days I hope to have one more aid station so that I can extend my out distances. I'll probably stage a vehicle or just have my wife meet me at a predetermined spot. That would give me a lot more course options.

Have you ever thought of eliminating sugar? Getting your body to tap into stored energy reserves? I am not a high performance athlete so I am may be speaking out of turn.

Have you ever thought of eliminating sugar? Getting your body to tap into stored energy reserves? I am not a high performance athlete so I am may be speaking out of turn.

No knock, your my homie...just curious what your thoughts are. It's been awhile since we talked diet.

Are you eating any animal proteins?

It was almost a year ago the last time I tried to kick my sugar addiction. Think I lasted a few weeks or maybe even a month. I ended up conceding to sugar addiction after my club's annual Secret Canyon run (out and back 32 miles with the only "aid station" at the 1/2 way mark) where I was bonking out of my mind with 3 miles left to go. I was so out of gas and water that I was bouncing off trees and drinking out of a cow pissed in creek and puking.

* I'm running that again next weekend. Club function. Killer trail through a wilderness area where nothing mechanized is allowed...even to keep the trail clear. It's also a trail used by migrants and smugglers...though the activity has dropped quite a bit since the late 1990's. It's a hard run. Have to have your shit together to run it out and back.

Admittedly...I have a problem with sugar. It's the only drug/food I have been unable to give up. I get most my sugar...on an average day...from organic maple syrup. I avoid refined sugar for the most part but..it's in everything. To totally avoid refined sugar in the American diet....you must be ready to read labels at all times. It's a disease.

Concerning animal proteins:

I allow myself some cow milk ice cream during the summer months, eat Swiss chocolate when it's sent over, eat a couple slices of pepperoni pizza every so often (a fetish?)....and when my friends/neighbors offer me up some wild game (last time it was duck...awesomeness) I'll usually indulge. O...and my wife brings home some good cheeses sometimes..but other than that...there is no animal proteins kept at my house.

Fat, Sugar, and Salt :

That's what seems to work for covering distances. When the body becomes depleted it will tell you exactly what it needs...but you need to learn its language and diagnose the symptoms of its condition. Not always easy. When I've gotten it wrong...I've become sick and feeble.

Everything in depletion becomes about calories. It's a different world. I look at every food in context to how much fuel it will give me. Long lasting fuel or quick burning fuel?...How will it act in my digestive system?.....but basically I just need to cram down calories.

I think I eat like shit on the days leading up to a race...during the race..and the days immediately following the race. I will eat all kinds of junk foods....anything that fattens me back up..or gives me instant bursts of energy. Mostly..yeah...sugary fat foods. During every day training..when I can fuel on what I want...fats come from canned coconut milk and avocados...salt comes from healthy foods and salt pills (during the summer)....sugar comes from maple syrup and peanut butter Clif bars.

* I'm now using products from Proven Nutrition. I met one of their reps at the Chimera 100M and tried one of their products when I needed to fuel during part of that race. Awesome stuff. Not cheap...but awesome. I just received a box of product for the spring training/races. A thoughtful company with plant based organic products.

On Cannabis use and sugar drops:

Cannabis affects sugar levels. I know that. It's sometimes very detrimental...no fun when you "drop out" after blazing up a bunch of herb in the morning. Almost always happens to me in the morning before I have fueled up proper. In this way...Cannabis is a tricky additive when one already has a bad sugar addiction.

I'll say it again:

Running ultra marathons and such is not exactly about being nice to the body or overall health. I do not claim to know it all or be an expert on body functions, diet, training, or any of that. I can only tell you what I've experienced...what has been revealed to me after all the years and miles covered. I'm in constant flux and attempt to be completely openminded...although

when the shit gets deep and I'm depleted out of my mind...I'll do whatever it takes to keep going.

^ I took down the 2 per pot Plenty clones yesterday morning. I did the math...one pot was at 69 days and the other was at 65 days flower. Manicuring them...I can't tell the difference between which is which.

^ Just to show the difference in flower structures. These are pictures from the last run of Plenty....harvested on day 58. I'd have to imagine that the differences from this run and the last run were environmental. As always...my world and gardens are somewhat controlled..but in no way...fully dialed. I fly a loose ship...

* I did really well with the 2 clones per pot. Plenty flowers don't weigh up...that's for sure....but if I grow them big enough (6'+) and double up the clones in 5 gal pots....it makes growing Plenty more Plentiful.

** ok ok....OK...I know I go on and on about the attributes and quality of this expression...but again...if there is any other sativa hybrid that I've worked with that puts this expression to shame or is better (for me)....I'm hard pressed finding it. This herb has it all. It's running herb.

*** Highly desirable amongst my friends. I'm mostly a hash smoker..and electricity in California is outrageous so a lot of these flowers find their way into my small circle's bongs. That's just how it is...in order to produce enough flowers to produce enough hash for my household..and to be able to afford the grow....I must finance Plentyland grows. Therefore..before it's even harvested..it is spoken for. You will not often..find anything so sativa dominant in medical dispensaries or in the black market. My circle is made up of experienced/older Cannabis enthusiasts....who relate to variety, my own tastes in herb, and "different" noncommercial approaches to production. I break even financially concerning the cultivation of this expression. You would never find warehouses full of Plenty....as it's just not realistic to grow commercially.

**** I mentioned that she showed a lot of intersex in the last 7-10 days. Not going all out in controlling room temps fully or low RH...and being a grower with lots of other things to do (meaning I sometimes don't turn on lights or turn them off early depending on my schedule/weather) I'd guess that Plenty could be dialed in much better...and might not show the intersex...not that

it matters much to me. I have always enjoyed working with hyper sensitive expressions..and intersex does not...to this day..freak me out or eliminate expressions from my garden. On a commercial level..of course..intersex would be a problem. I even tell peeps who ask for a clone..all the issues that they might find...which..you know..eliminates 99% of any interest most growers have. Tell them it yields light, stretches like a bastard, and has "herm" tendencies....few will want it. It's almost like hoarding a clone but not.

The race director has already sent out the course map....most all of which is also a part of the Chimera 100M..but much of which I've never seen in the light of day. Not that it really matters.

It's another very steep and difficult course. I'm sure I'll be leaving some pieces of myself there. All these races are fucking tough....that's how I look at it. Every race....every course..every mountain...every drainage...they keep coming at me...and I find a way to deal..to hack it. That's all I have to do. It's simple like that.
