A World On A String

I've been away from the site for a while but still think of this thread. I'm still running just like this thread is! Nowhere near the miles, I am a wimp, but I keep the spirit. I found some druid stone circles on my last run, nice place to stop and ponder. I should bring incense or something to leave there next time.

go well dude!

Day Before the 2015 Noble Canyon 50K

Day Before the 2015 Noble Canyon 50K

Start running up canyon at 0630 hrs tomorrow. Temps are to be in the upper 80's...but they'll probably be around 50 degrees at the start. Clear skies...with trails that have seen rain in earlier parts of the week...and which will be compressed and fast. Great conditions

50K?...about 31.some miles. It's never an exact distance..but give a mile or so to the sum....never shorter...course dependent. 31some miles.

sounds short to me these days. how perspectives change as distances have been achieved and then surpassed. compared to running 100M....31 appears in my mind as nothing almost. it's not true though...as 31 miles is still 31 miles....and Noble Canyon is a venomous snake around these parts. The course also uses the PCT, Pine Mountain Trail, and Indian Creek Trail...and each of those can be brutal in many sections. Plenty of hills...plenty of technical rocky single track...but the race also begins and ends with a little under a mile of pavement in each direction. So out of the gate on fast pavement and close out on fast pavement.

to...50k's are faster paced races. not much time is there to mess up..or squat in a bush..or just plain fuck off

* This will be my first repeat race. I raced it last year as my very first Ultra. So...the butterflies I'm feeling elevate themselves from running against a "known time". Am I faster? That is layered into the mindset. The elephant in the room. Have I learned anything? Have I improved? Am I an excuse or am I an animal?

^ New pair of Altra Lone Peak 2.5...new Injinji socks...new Buff headband...new gloves (gardening variety)...replacing all my worn out shit. Still wearing beat up..cut off board shorts (old ones...my original pair getting rotated in for this race)...beat up support underwear..beat up sleeves...broken in ball hat....broken in hydration belt...so

all my gear is either brand new or perfectly broken in. No issues there. Nothing needs to be broken in. The shoes are perfect out of the box....as are the socks. I have no concerns wearing new shoes and socks during a race. Not the first time I've started a race with new feet.

** No shirt needed in this race. I prefer to run shirtless in any situation where it's warm enough. I feel better not running with a shirt on....but I still run with arm sleeves on regardless. I just like them...make me feel tighter within myself or something.

*** I run with gloves on as well. I tend to use my hands more when they are gloved...and gloves help grip hydration bottles and wipe sweat away. They are essential when I run off trail...and that's how I got used to wearing them in the 1st place. From breaking branches and climbing over rocks...as well as...taking many falls. I feel better when I'm gloved.

**** Not to get ahead of myself...but after the Noble race I have a couple of weeks before I race the Cuyamaca 100K on Oct 3rd. That's going to be a motherfucker of a race as well...in similar and in different ways. Double tomorrow's distance and covering the series of mountains in the Cuyamaca Mnt range....plenty of pitfalls can be found

***** I decided that I'm not pacing myself over the 3 string of races this fall. I'm going max effort on all of them..not conserving myself from one for another. By the time I finish with the Chimera 100M Nov 14-15th....I expect to be pretty fucked up and have given my pound of flesh. That's how it is. I don't understand it differently. How else is there to play?

^ Only found a single bean all summer. This sprout is coming from a seed I found on J2

good luck.
push hard, pull harder.
i'll wait here...

Thanks, man. The race is at capacity...think 250 people. Clear as many racers as I can....keep up on my hydration and nutrition...stay balanced and not fall...climb strong/bomb fast....have some guts for the last mile and sprint.

No excuses. Save nothing. Leave everything on the course. Be pure

i just went for my first real ride after the race....busy+lazy for a few days...been hot too which didnt help motivate me...felt good, went to some unfamiliar trails which was nice after doing so many training laps at the same place...time to wander a bit further afield...

yup, crush it dude,im betting its like a bike race, kill the climbs and you will do well, and nice and steady and in control of your breathing equals success on the climbs...

I hadn't run since last Saturday..until a little bit ago. Did a 4 mile stretch run to wake up the body..see how everything was holding up. It's difficult for me to take days off the trails. My addiction to running is severe..so that a couple days seems like a week and a week seems like forever. But taking time off is essential to body health..even if it keeps me at odds with sanity....the soreness being much more prevalent....claustrophobic sensations blooming...discomfort all day and night

All the hill work I did the previous week can still be felt...twinges twings twangs pings throughout...wear and tear..semi healed up..somewhat rebuilt and recovered...bit tight. Feet and ankles still a little tired/tweaked. And...also...I'm still feeling the remnants of the 24hr timed run. That run damaged me some

To be expected. Where I figured I'd be. Still sleeping at least 1/2 the night on a yoga mat. Beside the yoga mat..assorted foam rollers..massage balls..tennis balls..etc..so that you could conclude... there is constant sorts of madnesses being laid upon even in states of REM

then there's the copious amounts of resins and flowers being smoked...the herbal solution

in and out of different places and clouds. it's not always fun. can't sit for very long...can't lay out in a single position for long...constantly beat up and gimping

This lifestyle...the sport...is not all love, peace, and tranquil. I'm paying the price.

* My diet is bothering me. With all this good food that I grow and purchase...all I really desire to consume is junk food. The cravings are insane. I've been eating all kinds of bad stuff: pizza slices, cow milk ice creams, pastries, potato chips....

hell...I'm going to the store in a minute and getting a pint of vanilla ice cream to put on my cantaloupe....and then I'll eat bean tacos and drink tea. My rule on race day says I can eat anything I want....and I actually look forward to that. It's like a new found freedom kind of deal. Crazy as fuck..but I see ice cream as the perfect run food...goes down cold and easy...satisfies the sugar needs..fills me up with calories...never makes me sick. I crave it after runs

Coke tastes like heaven during the races. I pound it. It's like instant sugar energy with caffeine. I don't drink it at home..but on race day...I love it...and it's at every aid station. Sweet.

Race Over

Race Over

Ran my most disciplined race to date...stuck to my nutrition/hydration plan...stuck to my pace management...stuck to the navigation plan

Finished about 5 minutes faster than last year...haven't seen official results yet...but probably in the top 20. Nowhere near the winning time...but I'm happy with it...and unlike after last year's race..I'm not totally wasted. Walking around ok

I ran solid the whole race...finished solid. No break downs...no falls..

It got a little warm in some sections..but the heat works for me...very comfortable heat running. I can almost always capitalize in the heat. The sun felt good...even if I'm a bit sunburned today.

* My body is still feeling the damage done in the 24hr timed run. Boy...I could feel it during the race..and now. My left hamstring tried to cramp after I lifted that leg up high..to go over a boulder...on a winding down hill section (Indian Creek Trail)...with over 10 miles left to go. Kind of had to be careful the rest of the way..especially on the steeper sections of Noble Canyon..not wanting the hamstring to go into full cramp mode. And the hip flexors...though they worked fine...shot needles the entire race..making me glad

that I wasn't racing longer than 50K this go around

but anyways....

It was a great race in all regards...very happy day in the sun with people pushing forward

** Under 2wks until I run the Cuyamaca 100K. I've already designed my plan for the next 2wks. It will include days of rest and nothing but road running. I want to experiment with some things.

This 100K is no joke. It's used as a qualifier for the Western States 100M...so people come from all over to race it. I have to have my shit together....semi healed up...get the mindset....because I do not want to be dying on the slopes of any of the Cuyamaca mountains. Fuck that

That's so cool, man. I have a lot of respect for the race directors and those working behind the scenes to make the events a reality. There may come a day when I become involved in creating a race.

* I'm in total recovery mode. Decided to let my body heal up..as I can tell it really needs a break. I'm not doing any training at all. The next time I run will be on race day (Oct 3rd)

I dont train that much either last couple of month but i now run 42,195 km on sub 4 ..its more easy to just run a marathon each week cuz then training aint needed :) But so fare i only run 2 each month ..There is a lil work with the registration and so on but Cannonball events is ok easy to make..you just need 5 with intention to finish before it counts in the statistics ..have an awesome Recovery ...the 3 oct i will run to , nr 20 , so i have you in my mind and send you some good wibes

A Week Out from the Cuyamaca 100K

A Week Out from the Cuyamaca 100K

Have not run a step since the Noble Canyon 50K (last Saturday)...but have been stretching and doing pull ups, push ups, and dips. Then..the last few days I've been caught up in some work that requires the moving..via wheelbarrow and bucket..of hundreds of pounds of rocks uphill..from the back of the property to the front...

not really resting much. my body is tired and sore...feeling beat up from my feet up..tore up. treading in everyday pain. I tried to have a plan..but circumstances got in the way...so everything is day to day

Can't imagine this last week into the race will provide me with some miracle recovery. There will be no straight days of rest. Life...as a whole...is an endurance trip....every mission between realities taxes the power source somehow...somewhere..someway

There are no rides for free. I'm burning through a lot of fuel.

* Nothing I can do or stress over. I'm getting to be an experienced ultra racer now...and my mindset is one of utter resolve. Once I cross the line...I'm gone...through a portal that...if all goes to the proper...spits me out 62 miles later. What happens in the other reality...can not be presently known. Set in the barrel...the sweet spot...pushed along..drawn down tubular passage

** I can almost predict that this 100K...coming now...in this 4th quarter season...will take out pieces of core foundation. It's going to be a long tough day for me. There is no getting around that. It must be driven straight through. I'm going to be hurt doing it.

That's it. I'm done thinking about it. Closure

There should be dug . There should be dug deep champ but your awesome and you love that shit so have an awesome 100 k ...when i grow old and tuff like you im on it to :)

Time Again

Time Again

The Cuyamaca 100K (the course is 63 miles) starts at 0630 hrs tomorrow. Believe the course has but 10,000some' elevation gain...so a lot of rolling hills....with a few climbs..one of which is climbing up to Cuyamaca Peak (6512' high)....and another up to the east mesa...

weather looks fast...dry and a high of only 77 degrees. don't think it will slow anybody down.

RUN STRONG RACE HARD is the base motto for this event. I'd like to finish sub 13 hrs....but you know...that's just a base concept..and I can't predict how it will go. It'll be a long ass day of running...all kinds of shit can happen on the course. I'm rested...fattened up..and stretched out. That's all I can hope for.

* On completion of this race...I'll have completed the San Diego Ultra Slam. I'll get a jacket and be recognized for having finished all the current Ultra distances in the county of San Diego...within the calendar year.

PCT 50M, SD 100M, Noble Canyon 50K, and the Cuyamaca 100K

...so I can sport my jacket and be a big deal to myself. Fuck it....the ego knows no bounds

** I'm not nervous at all. Not thinking much about the race. Homework is done..resting is done..training is never done.

I am though...excited about getting together with my peoples and pushing the limits of my endurance....being catered to..living in the glory

*** Believe it or not....since I started racing September of last year....this will be my 10th race. My rookie year has been long enough and I've gone the distances enough that I don't feel new any longer. My racing peers treat me differently....I get recognized more..kind of made my bones so to speak. Devolution?

post 4252 full of certainty, absolutes. you know, it's what you're doing.

and you also know, uncertainty is pretty good, robust solution.

take care of your feet.

congrats on the slam...

you should take a pic of your swag from the slam along with the blown out shoe collection and send it to the shoe company...if nothing else they will appreciate the feedback and you never know, something like the slam should give you some cred as far as getting some freebies...
