Nekker,
Lovely work and beautifulplants. Thanks for posting. My Malawi fem is just still a seedling but am looking forward to a happy grow with her. I like your use of the wooden support frame. Helps those heavy buds. I just stocked up on growing sticks and green ties.
Happy growing and look forward to your smoke report and harvested bud pictures if you get to do them. All good inspiration to fellow farmers and strain enthusiasts.

Keberos,
Great bud photos and a lovely grow from the look of the results. You must be feeling happy. Thanks for sharing the photos. Look forward to your outdoor results too!
Nice to read a smoke report on the buds you harvested, too. If you get chance to. Helps fellow farmers like me who are starting our first Malawi grow. I have done other African strains but Malawi is really a special herb which I only have smoked as a youth some 30 years ago, so am keen to grow her and revisit the powerful strength of Malawi herbs.
Happy growing !

I wanted to post an update on my Ace Malawi seedlings but they're not looking that great right now so I'll post the ugliest ones. Opinions and suggestions welcome.

They look like Mag def but I've been adding Epsom salts to each gallon of RO water. I've been using Veg + Bloom nutes. I haven't fed above an EC of 1.0. pH has been middle of the spread, usually 5.8 - 6.1.

When I started noticing the changes, I began doing more foliar using the V+B Push foliar product and added epsom to that as well.

I figured there must be some kind of lock out occurring but my run off today showed an EC of 0.9, same as I was feeding.

There are 6 seedlings. About half are a mildly taller pheno (17-18 inches at 7 weeks from germination) and the others are a little smaller (13-14 inches). The taller ones show the most leaf fade.

They've been vegging under two rows of LED bulbs, alternating between 8.5W and 13W bulbs.

Anyway, here's the pics:

Some sour diesel-ish plants in same conditions, light, feed etc with no fading:

I also turned off half of the bulbs (the 13W bulbs that are at 5K) and have changed from 24 hours of light to a 16-18 hr light on cycle. The little light bulbs don't look like much individually but they put out a lot of lumens. In a grouping of twenty above the plants, they are really bright. A few of the plants had grown to within an inch or so of the lights. I was thinking maybe they were getting a little light toxic and looked depleted as a result. Any opinions welcome

If I had to take a guess I would say it looks like a magnesium and iron deficiency (probably due to pH being too high). These stop to become available around pH 7.5+ so make sure your pH is around 6.2 for soil (i have no idea how you are growing). The purple stems can be genetic to a variety but most of the time it is a warning of low phosphorous levels (phosphorous also becomes locked out and higher pH). Incorrect air flow is another thing that can mimic these kinds of problems. Best of luck.

thanks for looking things over oldbootz.

I'm growing in coco. I'm using Veg + Bloom nutrients. I have grown these from seed. I have added silica and magnesium to each gallon of RO water for every watering. I have used occasional applications of their beneficial microorganisms additive and have used their foliar spray with added magnesium.

Like most other feedings, on the day I posted those pics, I used RO water that had an EC of 0.9 to 1.0 and with a pH of 5.9 to 6.0. The run off was the same EC, 0.9 and the pH was a little higher but no plant's runoff had a pH higher than 6.4.

I don't have a circulation fan in that veg closet but can easily put one in.

Given the run off EC and pH, i don't think a flush out will help at all. I've debated going up to an EC of 1.2 to 1.3 instead.

the quirk is that I have four strains in flower right now and another six plants of a different strain that have used the same nutrient approach with no similar changes. That's why I think it's some other environmental issue and not just a nute imbalance.

For now, I'm putting my money on excessive light driving the plants to hyper metabolize and functionally 'run out' of what is needed for that level of light. We'll see if the reduction in the number of bulbs that are on and the change form a 24 hr on cycle helps.

I know from earlier posts in this thread that the Malawi needs lower feeding concentrations than some strains. I'm wondering if the strain is more sensitive to light than other strains too

Don't know how malawi compares to other strains with sensitivity to light.

Did put my malawi grow under high intensity light an Amare 450. It has fish eye magnifier lens take screw in turning up the intensity.

If you want to see what I'm talking about check out harvest pics I posted in this thread.

Ona - that's a magnesium deficiency, most likely caused by being rootbound. You can try to make up for it with sprays of epsom salt or watering in calmag but the odds are they'll be a lot happier in larger containers.

Stop worrying about the lights. They aren't ever too bright. I've NEVER run into this issue outdoors or indoors and the sun is twice as bright as anything you'll ever run inside. People that misdiagnose things as light poisoning either have other issues in their grow or are dealing with weak plants.:huggg:

thanks everyone. I'm a new grower overall and this is my second round with plants, first with a pure sativa. Learning a ton but clearly still tons and tons to go.

fwiw, here's the typical root system when I up potted them a few days ago:

The roots are no more dense than the Yeti cross I have next to it but I understand the Sativas will show different sensitivities
