A Taste of Africa from Malawi

Welcome DanTheReggaeFan :) thanks for joining us here in the ACE Malawi thread.

Parents used for Malawi seed production are the same already for many years. Most relevant phenotypes that can be found in Malawi line are Old Killer, New Killer and fruity, all of them can be easily identified during second half of flowering.

What to look for in Malawi line ? Lots of vigor, very high yields, super resinous buds of huge trichomes, dense flowers of great flower/leaf ratio, overpowering, long lasting, profound effects.
Thanks man that's just what I wanted to hear. I wasn't sure if you had gone in a different direction between the start of this thread and now. Its good to know the 3 phenos from back then are still kicking around. I'm really hoping for the old killer but will be happy with any of the 3.

Keep up the good work man you're killing it 👍

Final report, a little disappointed how fast my Malawi dried. I really didn't consider how fluffy/airy (?) the buds were.

My fault, I usually have a 50cfm fan in my drying tent/contraption but this time I decided to use my air pump since it was handier. Didn't really notice it was set on high and after four days the buds were feeling crispy. So next time, pay attention and less air flow, sigh..

Bucked them into a tote and the next day they were @62%, sigh...

Four days later 58%. So they are vacuum packed in mason jars, total yield just over 7 1/4 oz !

Very nice high, the usual energetic, creative and clear(ish) head high. But, I do find I have to pay a little bit more attention to what I'm doing compared to my daily driver of Lambs Bread ;)

Easily worth the relatively long grow time !

As to taste, well. It's a little early to say with virtually no cure but it's smooth enough. Keep in mind I usually can't do much more than half a 14mm bowl with my bong:dance013:

Not much time to savor the flavor :canabis:

Greetings everyone! Today is the 14th day of 12/12. My Malawi is growing fine, absolutely no problems so far except one, and that's a very nice problem actually - she's getting bigger and bigger every day :D She drinks 5 liters of water every 2 days. Haven't fed her yet. It looks like worm castings and guano (1-10-1) are working just fine. Attaching some photos.

P.S. Sorry for the quality of the photos, obviously I'm not the best photographer out there.

Malawi cut going into the flower tent. The mom was taller than the other Malawis from the same pack, she's dark green, vigorous as hell, and longer flowering/maturing

Call her Razor Crocodile cuz of the leaves.
My #2 Malawi plant, so let's see what she's like in flower.

3 weeks into flower a storm hit and lights have been out for 5days! I have no idea what will happen to them. Things back on now I wonder if they will make it? Well this is what they look like at 5 days in the dark in early flower! New top leafs are yellow and plants are overall limp!

Any guesses what will happen? Will they live? Will they herm? Will they go into deeper flower? Will they finish early or late?

Looks like they are surviving the 5 days of darkness, slowly perking up, noticed more flowering today! The soils a little sluggish going to do some things to get more air in there!

I ended up culling the 2 large males because I planted them in the bed prior to sexing, but I’m going to try flowering the clones and hope to collect pollen that way. 2 Male clones…

Pretty cool they made it! Then again, some people do a couple days of darkness for the flip (some kind of attempt to speed things up), and five days is just a couple more..

Hello everyone

The Old Malawi have a beautiful strong lemon woody smell and sticky.
The New Malawi have a bit of a different look and smells are more subtle.
I saved 2 Old Malawi males #2 and #5.

planing on running Panama and Malawi and a Malawi x Panama (all from Ace) in a 3by 2,5 space - starting to think that 3 plants will be too much - maybe not with defoliation ? really in the 3by2.5 space one plant would be best. going to start at 12/12 then a 24hr dark time before flower flip ( this will shorten flower time by 1-2 weeks) and flower at 13hr dark- thoughts ?

Awesome grow man!

With your experience in pheno hunting Malawi, have you found any with a more up heady high?

What about compact phenos vs the more stretchy ones that climb the ceiling. Any difference in high or quality based on this?

What range of highs have you found in the line?

What are your goals for this grow of the NM vs OM? Are you looking for something specific?

I’m trying to make f2’s, wish I had more to choose from than 6 but that’s how the cookie crumbled this time.

Hi tjmccoy

I tend to go with the short bushy ones. I know I can get a really potent short bush, so why fight with a stretchy plant. I've had some that finished around 10 weeks. The highs were good at 10 weeks, but I find most plants 11 weeks or longer have more desirable effects. The 10 week plant would give me a nice 2 hour high. My 14 week plant will send my mind soaring and energize my body for 4 hours or more. All my favorite plants to smoke are 12 weeks or more. I'm a lover of sativas and their effects. Each strain will have it's own characteristics to look for and this is what I look for in Malawi.

I go with my feelings on a plant initially, as well as the growing, flowering, finished bud and effects of course.
I have 2 Old Malawi males I saved and it was a hard choice of not saving any New Malawi males.
I saved the best of the best from what I had. I favor the Old Malawi for it's strong lemon woody smells.
It reminds me of one of the most potent plants and Malawi I have. I will be using these 2 Old Malawi males on the Old Malawi, New Malawi females and my old Malawi clone. If Dubi sees anything he likes, then you all will have a chance to have these lines as well.
It's not always a numbers game. It's like playing the lottery. It only takes one to win. :greenstars:

I hope I answered all your questions.:watchplant:

@Zanddar Gotcha! 13-14 week, bushy structure, lemon woody, soaring 4+ hour high!

Yes that info helps, I see what you mean about the bushy ones, I’m loving the structure like this on one of my 6. What ratio would you say is bushy to stretchy in the lines?

Have you ran into any color other the red candy stripes on stems?

Thinking out loud here but maybe that’s a direction for me to go if I get a lot of seeds. I could do something like pop a hundred and throw out all the stretchy’s and then further select from that. The bushy structure would certainly lend better to some crossing I have in mind too!

I personally don’t mind 13-14 weeks flower, it’s the 19 to 20 weeks where I just run out of patience!

For the last run of 3 fems, I found Malawi to have a lot of potential, reasonable flower time, so sticky and resinous, the high is something that stands out really different. A great evening smoke for me and the ms enjoyed a lot!

Keep the pics and updates coming! Cheers 🍻
