I shoveled th whole 600 ft the other day, it was like 3 inches of heavy wet slush. About 10 or 12 years ago, the doctors wanted me to get surgery on my lower back. I shoveled this driveway after a huge storm back then, and just that one workout fixed my back I still have issues, but I still never had the surgery. And I like to shovel 😀
I just need to keep my core in shape to keep away the back issues.

My back issues is some stupid assed muscle that gets tight as fuck. It actually helps loosen it up when I work.

About 20 years ago I had a doctor say my back was so bad the only thing that could fix it was pain meds or surgery. I went back to work and it healed itself. Turns out that the way I carry my shingles is the exact thing needed to build core strength. They call it the suit case carry I think. I also do a exercise called tummy tucks which strengthens the core. Basically you suck your stomach in as hard as you can as long as you can. I do it when I am driving.

The older I get the more I think doctors dont have a clue how to fix your body. More interested in giving you the greatest new drug that will get you hooked on a narcotic or just cover over the issues you have but not fix the problem.

I recently went to a chiropractor for my sciatica and it definitely helps. I was great for about 6 months after a few visits. I just hurt myself again and probably going to go back.

Look up Stuart McGill. He has a book on how to strengthen your back so you dont have those issues. Your spine is not strong enough to support your upper body. The muscles around your core do that. He is a world class expert on doing that. Studied the back for something like 40 years. As you age the muscles get stretched out and weakened. They need to be worked out to get your core stabilized. Then the body can fix your back damage.

I started doing some body weighted core excercises a few times a week. It helps for sure. My overall mobility was in BAD shape for about 10 years. I have lost a ton of weight and started living a healthier lifestyle which has helped. I agree that core muscles have to be worked. I couldnt even stretch out 2 years ago but now I can move all over the place. Stretching and moving feel great. The chiro helped too.

If you were overweight your transverse abdominis has been stretched out and needs to be tightened back up. The same thing happens to pregnant woman. It needs to be tight like a girdle to support your body.

You might also want to do some hanging. It will loosen up your shoulders and also put your back in traction. It will stretch the muscles along your spine.

I bolted a bar to the beam in my basement to hang from. At first if felt like the muscles on my sides were tearing. I could only hang for 40-45 seconds. But it sure loosened up my shoulders and stopped the pinching I was feeling. But it also felt good to stretch the upper back muscles as well.
