supposedly, mens clothing has the button there because vast majority are right-handed, therefore kept that hand free to grab for a sword or pistol. unisex clothes? no idea...velcro? lol. heard years ago that toilet paper comes off over the top toward you to make it harder for black widows etc to build a web between the paper and the wall. THAT ol' boy still had an outhouse, where spiders were probably more common than indoors...
That makes sense. In the navy when we had to dress up in old ceremonial uniforms which included a sword, it went on the left side. Then if you are escorting a lady, she goes on your right arm so that the sword wont poke her. Also needs to be lockstep, no holding hands. Lockstep is that old style where ladies wrap their arm around their escort´´s arm.
Kinda weird now that I think about. We had training for officers ballroom dance etiquette and proper sword placement. But no actual fencing training.
