600 watt Cooltube fan

Whats up people?

I have a question that I haven't been able to get an answer to.

What is the minimum size fan (CFM) that I can use for my 6" 600 watt Cooltube?

I have 2 different inline fans.

1 - 4" 140CFM
1 - 6" 312CFM

And a carbon filter

1 - CanFilter 2600 with 4" flange, rated at 94CFM

What I am trying to accomplish is to use 1 fan for both my Carbon Scrubber and Cooltube.

Will the 4" 140CFM inline fan be strong enough to pull air through the carbon filter and then push air through the 6" CoolTube?

Or will the 6" 312CFM inline fan be too strong for the CanFilter 2600 4" 94CFM to work?

I appreciate any help I can get on this matter right away. I am building this and have been trying to figure this out all day and I have stuff all over the place. I have to get this done to move on to my next step.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

the 4" can filter is too small for either of those fans... You always want to go with more CFM rating on your filter than your fan...

Hey Appollo thanx for the reply. That was the carbon filter and fan that came with the hydrohut mini. The 140CFM fan is the little one, they sent that one to work with that carbon filter.
I've been reading that the longer the air is in contact with the carbon the cleaner it will be. Which would make sense to have a smaller fan to pull the air slower.
But like I said that is what they sent from HIDHUT. Is that too small? Will it work? Should I get a bigger filter? How well do you think that set-up would work?

Thanx for the help

Your filter first, coupled to the hood with a very short flex duct attached to the 6 inch inline and right out of the room.

Your total system cfm will never be greater than your intake cfm, i.e... 94 cfm is your max air flow no matter what size fan, becuase thats what your 4"filter is rated at.
I have no idea what cfm is required to cool 600w, but with your filter, a 2' cool tube, and a couple feet of duct.... your now down to 70-80 cfm. I just don't think thats enough cooling. As Apollo said, get yourself a bigger filter.

Will the 4" 140CFM inline fan be strong enough to pull air through the carbon filter and then push air through the 6" CoolTube?

that fan is adequate for the carbon filter, and the 94 cfm is enough to keep the cool tube pretty cool, if your ducting isnt too long. The 94?140 cfm flow might not be enough ventilation for that space for overall heat/humidity. And, if you use the bigger 6" fan, you will certainly have some waste of efficiency, but you will most certainly pull more air through the system. Just cause the filter is rated at 94 doesnt mean you cant overdrive it some. You might have some odor. experiment.

Thanx for the replies everyone. I guess my best bet would be to get a bigger carbon filter and use the 6" 312cfm fan. I was hoping I could get this to work without having to spend any more $$.

foaf - The Space is 3.5 x 3.5 x 6 about 70cfm.

Ty-Stik - Why do you think that would work? Is it because by the time the
6" fan is pulling air through the light and some ducting and then through the carbon filter, that the pulling power will be down near the carbon filters rated 94cfm?????

TIA

I'm still trying to figure out what is the best thing to do.

I appreciate all the help everyone, but with what I've heard so far, I still can't figure out if this will work or not. I can't find out after the fact that it didn't work. If that means spending more $$ then so be it. I would prefer to be able to use the carbon filter and fans that I have. But if it won't work correctly, I'll dig deep and get what is needed.

Please anyone that knows how this can work 100% or not 100%, let me know.

If you could please explain why you believe it will work. I have a couple of posters telling me 2 different things. So its hard to know what will work.

Ty-Stik, I appreciate you saying to do it like that. But you didn't tell me why you know that will work. You just say, This is the way. Why do you believe that is the best way?

Thanx in advance,

I ran a 600W cooltube with a 150ish cfm in my tent last year before I upgraded. It was adequate for the job, temps we're a constant 83-5f. 4" ducting, 4" fan, and budget carbon filter.

But I have since upgraded to a 6" fan, 6" acoustic ducting and a phat filter. Think it's rated at approx 400cfm.

The upgrade was well worth the money. The surface temperature of my cooltube now is 91f!!!! :jump: :jump: (I've got an IR thermometer :D)

Why do you only want to run one fan?If i had to run olny one i would use the 6'' and get a speed controler for it.I got one on e-bay with two outlets for like 20.00usd with shipping.Ps dont try and use a dimmer swicth it wont work.Good luck.Stay Safe!

Hey everyone, Thanks for replying.

Sammet, How was your odor with the 4" system. Also, do you know what your carbon filter was rated at? TIA

bugbud, A speed controller, hmmm. That might do the job. I guess I could pick one of those up at home depot. Just use the 6" at a lower speed? Is that what you are saying?

The budget carbon filter had a 100ish cfm - I grow in a locked room, in a basement and vent into an attic via existing ducting in my house, in the middle of nowhere. So odour was not my main concern, just I didn't want my house to reek of cannabis. With the budget filter there was definately some smell getting out.

Do yourself a favour, get the best you can afford with a speed controller. Better to have too much odour control/ventilation than too little.
