5 ton central AC debate! whats the deal with Excel?

Hey so i got refered to an HVAC guy who did all the AC for my friends warehouse grows in the bay area, he said to stay away from goodman and that they arent the best for grower specific AC. He says i should go with a brand called Day & Night, has anyone heard of this?

he claims that of all the grow room AC he has installed that goodman has way more repairs and service needs compared to D&N.

they dont cost too much more than goodman from what i see online....some reviews say that they have lasted 20-30 years.

If I had to choose between the two, I'd go with the D&N . Any brand; new ac, is going to get the job done as long as it is properly sized and has proper air distribution and balance. Design is the far most important step in installing a new ac.

A quality budget brand I can vouch for is Arcoaire. I have installed dozens of them and haven't had one complaint. I actually like them better than any carrier, trane, american standard, york, etc.

They're actually not even budget, and have a nice quality to them. The price has gone up on them over the past 10 years.

I took heating and air while locked up. Lol they lock me up for growing and teach me the one thing I needed to be self sufficient .

Yes over sizing can be bad. Most motors in any device get the most wear on start up. Same thing with a compressor.

From what I learned it's not hard to install a unit. Install. Purge lines with nitrogen. Vacuum. Fill with refrigerant. Measuring the refrigerant in is the most critical aspect. But on a new system you should know with line length exactly how much to put in.

For one unit the excel may be worth it. For three if you can't get a pro I would invest in learning and diy and installing a different unit. Keep in mind no epa card and it's hard to get refrigerant.

i forgot to mention i have an available 100 amp 3 phase converter installed at this spot from previous owner. should i put the 4 tons on that or just do things normally. i have heard pros and cons about using 3 phase power for AC.

i am all for maximizing power savings and minimizing amperage, but my hvac guy said that for only 12 tons, paying extra for the 3phase units isnt gonna really generate any big savings. says that 3 phase is more for big buildings and shit up the 50-100ton range...

i dont know....im going over to the spot tmro to try and figure out whats up. they have my 4 ton units in stock but in single phase, so still wondering about the single vs 3 phase advantages.

Just use the single phase, if it's one of those converters, it isn't really as good as having real 3 phase coming in

Yup i will start a grow thread soon, i just dont want to start until i have everything started and dialed….i never liked all the massive threads that started with an empty shop and a pile of equipment and then never showed us the rest of the show! *cough cough Vagpuncher DutchTouch MedMan cough*…haha


so how hard is it to add UV filters to the air handlers? as well as adding low temp kits to the 4ton condensers. the guy forget to put them into my order, but luckily temps are warm out here but i will need those installed before the winter because it does dip into the 40-50s.

Sorry to barge in...I need help also... should i go with R410 or R22 whats the difference? i have a room with 8k im putting a 2 ton in any on have any brands pleases pm me with any help????

R410 is new and is supposed to allow for higher effeciencies. It is harder to find an r22 now.

You can find r410 25lb bottles on amazon, I believe you need a license for r22

Great info keep it coming.... im going to put the coil on top of the air handler and put a plum on top and rum it 4 ways... and not vent anything out..is this an good idea or whats the best way to set it up?

UV light is easy to install. my hvac dude put it in for free, i think ya just throw it in the return plenum and wire it up to a power source.

Made me laugh. So true. Right down to re-creating the sun indoors. And both get ridiculously expensive.

My A/C guy sells Arcoair. I was hesitant since I'd never heard the name. Turns out they're top shelf quality at a budget price. He said "you can buy whatever brand you want, and I'll install it. Except Goodman". I bought a Trane that was supposed to have a super quiet insulated compressor. Sounded like a train. Replaced it 6 months later. The Arcoair is quiet. Only one Ive heard that ran quieter was a Rheem. To be fair, both were r-22 units so the new tech may be a different story.
