The best rule of thumb that I can offer is this...The plant has to be able to handle being put into flower mode. The shock of going from whatever your vegging light was to 12/12 is pretty brutal. Also you have to make sure the plant is just plain ole happy. If its not growing vigerously in veg than it aint gonna grow very well in flower. I know that the strain I like to grow is recommended to veg to a height of 10-12". Probably keeping in mind that doesnt mean a stretched out spindly 12" but a healthy, bushy 12. Just take your time and introduce it to the new light gradually. Set it in the new enviroment at 18/6 and if you run a high pressure sodium, keep the light kinda high for the first week or so. Light diminishes exponetially @ 12" increments. So consequently, if you have it close you run the chance of burning the tender leaves. So when first getting them used to the new light keep em cool and a long way from the bulb...20" in some casesReality said:

hello all,you should have altenateing branches not side by side .after that it can go to 12 and 12.then i think it is your style that and size of growing room.if you have a small grow area then early. unless you are going to lts. or scrog.then longer you will work it out with exsperence and time.peace[unless you do 12 and 12 from start most won't]

I'm growing under a 400w Hortilux Eye HPS and 2 cfl's(23w?). Day 27. They're getting bushy but the vertical growth seems a little slow, 7 or 8 nodes on the biggest, but its only 6 inches tall.
I'll probably let them veg for another week or two or three depending on the height.

if your growing a sativa dom. with a 400,your going to want to wait untill nodes have been alternating for a few weeks,to avoid a major stretch when the lighting changes
indicas apply to this too,but less,as there not going to stretch more than a foot or so.
personally,its up to your grow space,and what you have room for. thats my 2 cents!

Thinking of joining your ranks. I will be getting a medical card soon to grow 6 plants. Wanted to know what yield people get off 6 plants under a 400HPS. I'm looking for 4 ounces a month using clones. For now i will be doing soil till more funds come in. What type of venting do you need for a 400? i was going to use a Stanley blower. Do i need to make a cool tube for a small 3x3 closet?
Any helpful brain storms will be great if any one's bored. If anyone has a 400HPS 6 plant set up with pics that would be great. Looking for max yield.
