3 gallon or 5 gallon ?

ive noticed that my plants in coco need transplanting way before my plants in soil. Im doing both to see the diff in taste and smell. as far as growth, the plants seem to like the coco better. I get more vigorous growth which I think is related to more roots. so what you guys are saying about the root mass and going from smaller to larger as the plant needs it makes sense now.

Grownz, the only real drawback in going directly into the 3 gal bag is he's wasting media bigtime, other than that without vegtime there should be a problem.Actually my 2 gal (NSI classic 600) are closer to 1.6 gal,the classic 1200 3 gal pots are true 3 gal I'm pretty sure. The idea behind transplantation in finite containers is more about soil utilization than anything else.Soil utilization does amount to healthier happier plants though.Just try and finish a tall stretchy pheno in a 3 gal pot planting the seed directly into it,then with the same pheno go through the transplantation process, you'll see what I mean. The one planted directly into the 3 gal will not yield nearly what the transplanted one does if it doesnt become rootbound. When you look at the rootball the center will be unused and the reasons become clear

great thread. i think a big problem is that people transplant too early and put plants in bigger pots then they need when we are talking about this facet of growing our wonderful plant. i have learned this as well. I go from beer cups, to quarts, to 1 gal to 3 gal and it works fine. i wait for the roots to really fill the container and come out of the drainage holes, then transplant. great info guys. peace

I couldnt agree more, they are thinking in opposition to the truth too.In container growing, giving plants "lots of room to stretch their roots" is not beneficial to the plant or the pocketbook.A rootbound condition will result in growth ceasing, but letting the rootball fill the container before transplanting is totally different than letting a plant become rootbound.I dont know when the best time to transplant is,so I let the plant tell me.When I'm at a point where I'm having to water every other day after total saturation because the roots take all the liquid, then I know its time to go up a size. Then the process starts again,I'm watering normally every 4th or 5 th day, then every third, then every other. The roots below tell me what my eyes can only guess at on at whats happening above ground,I've transplanted 6 inch pheno's from 4 inch pots,I've transplanted 12 inch pheno's from 4 inch pots, the roots made my decision for me not plant height.

Hello all,

I do beer cups to 1 gallon pots to 3 gallon pots. I veg in the 3 gallon for about 7-10 days and take cuts and flower.

When I transplant, I use dry mycorrhizia and I break up the rootball gently and spread it out in the new pot. Some folks just drop the rootball in and put new soil around it...It think this is a waste of space by leaving the majority of the old spent soil...but this is my method and wish to only suggest it.

It's good to know that alot of people do similar potting up methods to me!
Found out the grow bags that i thought were 1 gallon are actually 6.75L, around 1.5 gallons.

you could even cut the bottoms out of 1 gall grow bags and set them on top of 3 gallon bags. grow bags are cheap

I'd suggest everyone, especially those that use 1 gal containers as a reference for dolomite lime measurements, google up the container manufacturer to find the actual volume of your various containers, most folks would be aghast at what can be flowered in a true 2 gallon container!I flower 3oz plants and larger in NSI classic 600 1.6 gal pots all day long, but only if I transplant into it with an established rootball

What an enlightening thread. I am going SCROG in a couple weeks and I may spend some of that veg time changing pots now too.

Thanks for the good stuff smiling bob

Yeah I second that , a second time ... Thanks to all for their insightful info in this thread ...

And just to make this clear ... No one here that veg's their plants for two months using the transplant up method ends up using 5 gallons ??

Some definately do,I did a few times.I found the size plants I flower which are pretty large just didnt need the 5 gallon(NSI classic 2000).A lot of people may actually veg a little longer than me,have more headroom, and prefer to finish in 5 gal.Right now all my phenos are 3 1/2 to 4/12 ft tall(grapefruit and ice are the biggies blockhead and WW the shorter)and all will be finished within two weeks.I'm watering every third day, they are healthy as can be,and I know from experience would be no healthier or yield more had I finished in 5 gal.But yes some do,hell pops finishes his in 15 gal! He's what you call a redwood grower lol

LOL @ "redwood grower" ...

Ballastman - what happened to vegging to 30 inches so you could harvest "quarter pounders with trichs" ... ? Or did they just grow to be 3 - 4 ft after flipping to 12/12 ?

How long on average do you veg ?

I vegged this time much longer than normal, they were 30-33 inches when I flowered. The boigers are a comin, its a matter of days/week or 10 days for the GF.I swear I've never kept track of vegtime like on a calendar or something,I'd say 4-5 weeks though.7-10 days right under the tubes then move to HID's.I'm starting to calendar things though,Ima get oganized!
