Traditionally, January and February are the two coldest months in Interior Alaska. And whereas March is stated to come in like a lion and exit as a lamb in much of the Lower 48, I used to say that March comes in like a T-Rex, and leaves like a rhinoceros.
We're slated to have -20 f tonight, and I believe the next night or so is to hit -25 to -31 (tomorrow night or the next).
Then back up into the just below and just above 0 f. range.
Still mild by comparison to days of old when we might see 3-5 weeks of -35 to -60 or better.
Headed for snowmobile fuel shortly. Gasoline at sub-zero is my 'old man's nemesis.' One of many these days. Stuff evaporates faster than alcohol and can leave 'instant frost-bite' from the evaporative cooling properties in serious cold temps. Far colder process than fuel oil.
broken cold wave in upstate ny, above freezing now
no one i've talked to recalls such a severe cold wave
records were set, it's not just golden oldie memories
Paper last week said this was the warmest December on record for Alaska in over 100 years.
Currently ~-10 f on the front porch.
The predicted -20 f. to -30 f. didn't materialize last night, and today's highs are predicted to be -3 f to -5 f. Tonight's supposed to get down to -20 f to -31 f or so; we'll see.
Like I wrote before, all of these changes are throwing curve balls for the 3 computer systems NOAA's using for calculating probability of weather movement/changes.
By Saturday, we're supposed to be in the +upper teens to lower or mid-+20s, staying with us through early next week, at least, if NOAA's view of the future stays anywhere near accurate.
Travel weather on the horizon, whether to the bush, or Los Anchorage; some time soon, both.
-5 on my hill, -27 in the valley. Dodged another bullet.
Just a few days ago the models indicated a week of cold that never happened, now it is a warming trend.
During my tenure as a dispatcher for an interior Alaska commuter line I learned to read weather fairly well, and for the past few years have beaten the computer models substantially.
I feel the cold coming, hope I am wrong.
-18 f. on my front porch. Haven't called NOAA, but I'll take Phaeton's word for it. My inversion's been running up to 12-15 degrees f warmer than the Fairbanks Airport NOAA reports, so the +9 degrees f warmer air at my home, above the Airport's reported temp, is completely within the realm of believability.
Temps are supposed to be headed downward still, and warming coming slowly beginning tomorrow or so, with the week-end still predicted to be +mid-teens to +lower-20s, the last time I checked (last night).
Either way, now or what's predicted for later, it's way warmer than it might be for this season. No real complaints.
temps in upstate NY back to seasonable, 20 to 30f, for now
but the next few days 40f+ with rain a plenty, then another freeze
this is what we've seen over the more recent years, alternating cold and warm of the extreme form
what it does is turn the snow into a mass of slush, which then in turn freezes into a skating rink
except it's not good for skating, or much else for that matter
-8 f. on the porch right now, AND at the Fairbanks Airport on NOAA's gear.
This is one of those times I might want my property value re-assessed; if I'm not receiving the benefits of the higher elevation in adiabatic lapse rate and associated winter inversion, then I want my money back!!
Was -2 f. to -3 f. at the Airport/NOAA's gear all night and into this morning. -8 f. on my front porch at about 6:30 A.M. The more noteworthy cold that NOAA had forecast has not materialized yet, and, per the current forecast, is not apt to come within the next week or more, other than for threats for some nearby areas to reach lows over the next day or so in the -teens f. to -20 f.
(*You can hear me complaining about the absence of the more noteworthy cold, right??).
I have, however, renewed my interest in REM's 'Losing my Religion,' and having it re-written to the effect of 'Losing my Inversion.' I think it could be a huge hit in some places. Especially among aging hippies living at higher elevations around here.
